Rick’s Place

Discover how to REALLY relax!

Would you like to relax in your own peaceful pool that you share with no one, listening to your favorite tunes, while contemplating the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then our home will be perfect for you.

If you are like us, you want to do nothing but relax and disconnect while on vacation. We don’t like resorts, eating every meal out, sitting around a pool with 100 other people, or going to luaus.

Rick’s Place is a cozy, romantic home, perfect for couples or best friends who want to catch up and hang out. Unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and disconnect from your crazy busy life. Stock up in town (we will even tell you the best places to shop), and then head down to the house on the cliff. Spend your days sitting around in the solar-heated pool, reading on the lanai or sitting by the sea wall. Watch the whales jump in the winter months (they will wake you up at night during whale season!), reading and talking, and cooking dinner on the gas barbeque or in our well-equipped kitchen while enjoying an icy cocktail. Milolii sunsets are the highlight of the day- no two are ever the same. Turn off all the lights and lay out on the chaise lounges and look at the moon and the Milky Way at night. Showering in the outdoor shower with the ocean breeze blowing on you is refreshing and revitalizing. Stereo system acoustics are great, and you can play music both inside and out by the pool. There is good Wi-Fi and Direct TV on smart TVs, as well as a Blu-Ray player. But we hope you don’t spend your days watching TV- it is too beautiful outside!

There is a viewing area on the cliff where you can sit and contemplate the sea while enjoying your morning coffee or your evening libations. The Kona fishing fleet aims for the waters in front of the house, so sometimes you can witness a hook-up while staring out to sea (we provide binoculars). When the water is calm (the area is jokingly called Lake Kona because it is usually so flat!), it is crystal clear, and you can look down and see tropical fish and the occasional turtle or hammerhead shark swim by. Sometimes the surf is high and the waves crash against the cliff dramatically. One guest called the high surf “Hawaiian fireworks” which is a great description.

The drive down from the highway takes you from 1500 ft. elevation to sea level across a lava flow. We remember our first impression! It’s a long, narrow, winding ride, but there are spectacular views on the way down. If you want to go to town every night or do a lot of sightseeing, the drive may be inconvenient. For a day trip every few days, it is no big deal.

There is easy access to water and great snorkeling a short walk north of the house at the Milolii Beach Park. Honomolino Beach is a great nearby sandy beach. There are many beautiful beaches and good restaurants within an hour’s drive. Our house is centrally located between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park, which is a must see- where else can you see geology in action?

If you need supplies during your stay, there are well-stocked grocery stores 20 minutes south, in Ocean View.

Our home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor shower. Every room in the house except the half bath offers up an ocean view. Kitchen is easy to cook in and is well-appointed, and the living area is furnished very comfortably and is open and breezy. Bedroom and living room glass French doors open to the ocean view and breeze. The wrap-around lanai includes a small in-ground solar heated pool.

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. We have always loved Rick’s Place, Milolii and all the wonderful people we have met there. We are thankful to Rick, who agreed to sell us our favorite place on earth, and our friends in Hawaii, who have helped up to make this dream come true. We loved it so much, we moved here from California. We now live a few miles up on a coffee farm, so we are close by if you need anything.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

*NOTE* Homeaway has taken away the ability for us to speak in person before you book (they won’t let us share phone numbers before you book). Because our home is not near resort areas, we want to make sure it is the right experience for you. As soon as you reserve our property, you will have access to our phone numbers and we would love to talk to you. Call Melanie right away if you are unsure if our house is right for you. We will cancel the reservation and refund your full deposit within two days’ of your initial deposit if after our conversation you want to stay somewhere different- we will even help you choose other locations. We can easily communicate through the Homeaway portal when you make an inquiry too.

About Melanie and Dan Lewis

We live on a nine acre farm above Milolii by the Highway. We recently made the big leap across the ocean from the tiny Northern California town of Angels Camp. We are now full-time Hawaiian residents. We have been visiting the islands for decades and our heart has always been here.

We have been business owners for years ( we owned a fishing tackle/marine/gas station/mini mart deli on a lake for 20 years which we sold to make the move, and Dan was also a partner in a stone masonry sales and manufacture yard). Now we are refurbishing the house on the farm and just kicking back and relaxing for the first time in our lives. We enjoy meeting new people and love to meet our guests. Our daughter lives in Sacramento and is soon to be married to a wonderful guy. They love to visit.

Melanie and Dan Lewis purchased this house in 2014

Why Melanie and Dan Lewis chose Milolii

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? We bought the house from our good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, we would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the architecture of the house shows his artistic flair and creativity. We have been blessed with friends and family who have helped us make it a truly loved special place, with most of the artwork furnished by talented friends.

We hope you enjoy and cherish your time here as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The first time we visited Milolii, we wondered where we were going, as we drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once we were sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, we understood the magic of the place. We helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect. I'm pretty sure there is not another ocean front house anywhere in Hawaii or even in the USA with a private pool that is an affordable vacation rental. We love our house and you will be able to tell. It's not one of those vacation rentals furnished with cheap furniture and bare minimum of kitchen stuff.

Simply Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

First off, I have never stayed in a VRBO that has this much thought and attention to detail. It is literally as if Dan and Melanie just leave their personal home so that you can vacation in it! Anything you may need or forgot or didn't know you needed is provided! And that is nice, as closest store is about 20 minutes away.

Let's start with that road: its super fun to drive! But made me nauseated going up as a passenger on an empty stomach. But oh the views from the road! Also, make note that Milolii is not touristy. At all. An hour plus from Kona, Volcano, Hilo. Being from Houston, we don't mind driving alot. In fact, we drove over 700 miles while we were there: Captain Cook kayak/snorkel, South Point and Black Sand Beach, Volcano Park, biking to see lava, Mauna Kea and Saddle Road, dinner cruise in Kona, and more!

House: so comfortable! Pool even has a solar heater and would get up to about 87 degrees by early afternoon and stay until a bit after dusk. Outdoor shower is fun! Lots of snorkel equipment provided, along with ice chests, and boogie boards! Kitchen has much more than basic seasonings and condiments: syrup, butter, full assortment of seasonings and condiments, just everything!

Our in-laws rented a house up the street and they were so jealous of ours! Didn't even miss having AC! And the view! Loved just sitting and watching the waves crash. I cannot say enough glowing, fabulous things about this special home!

Also, we really appreciated meeting Dan and Melanie when they brought us a bottle of wine, a mango, and a papaya! Melanie has made me a fan of mango! Not that I'll be able to get that mango back here in Texas though...

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review! It was so fun to meet you both. Now that we are living here full time we are enjoying the opportunity to meet our guests. Our friend the Weavers have a mango and dragonfruit farm, and their mangos are amazing! You can buy Weaver mangos at Choicemart and KTA here on the island. So ono!

Not to be missed!

  • 5 of 5

I found this place two years ago and we decided to try it out for Christmas and New Years.

Dan and Melanie were wonderful owners who thought of everything one could need to make

your stay excellent. We enjoyed a taste of real old Hawaii with no resorts or golf just

wonderful small village with real nice people living there. We read several books and watched four whales

go by during our stay and also a school of spinner dolphins.

The Kitchen was great and we loved night showers in the lanai.

We snorkeled at a small beach about 20 minute walk from town several time during our

stay. We enjoyed shopping about 25 minutes away and the Saturday market in Ocean View.

This is a perfect place for a good rest and I know we will come back again.

I would give this place 6 stars not 5

Words Can't Explain

This is the place for a couple wanting to be away from it all. With the winds blowing lightly and the sounds of the ocean this was such a great place to be. I cant wait until next year where I stay longer.

A Beautiful and Secluded Piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I came here to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. We have been to the Big Island before and did the resort thing in Waikoloa. This time we wanted something a little more private. Rick's Place definitely fills that order. If you need to be where there is something going on all the time and you can either walk or drive nearby for action, this is not for you. If, on the other hand, you want to relax in the awesome pool for two and just enjoy the beautiful scenery, I totally recommend this place. Dan and Melanie have thought and provided for everything you may need. There is beach equipment, coolers, bogie boards and beach towels for your enjoyment. The kitchen was stocked with everything you might need, including condiments, spices and all the items you usually have to spend a fortune on to compliment a meal. There is a quality Weber BBQ to cook your meals. There is an great stereo system, with outdoor speakers, to play your music from your phone. The outdoor shower is fantastic. We enjoyed our coffee each morning on the table overlooking the ocean.

But, unless you enjoy driving an hour or more back to Kailua, make sure you bring all the food you plan on eating during your time here. There is a store in Ocean View, but it's a half-hour away. The drive up and down the hill is not bad. Just take it slow and stay to the right.

The only negative, and it is mentioned in the description, is the mosquitoes can be bad, especially in the mornings and early evenings. Keep lathered up with repellent if you are affected.

Mahalo nui loa Dan and Melanie. It was a pleasure meeting you guys.

Owner's Response: We loved meeting you, and talking about Green Thumb Nursery, where Dan and I met in Missilon Viejo almost 40 years ago! We loved your idea of a coffee decanter so you can bring a pot of coffee down to the sea wall. We have already bought it! You guys were here when there was no breeze, so the mosquitoes move in, little buggahs! Took a few days for them to find you. Glad you mentioned them- they are part of the Big Island experience, and as hard as we try to be “not buggy” they are here.

One of the most unique and dramatic places you'll ever experience in Hawaii.

  • 5 of 5

This Cliff House is truly a rare find. From mornings drinking coffee on the edge of the lava cliff, to the spotlessly clean pool, the gorgeous sunsets that consumed the whole sky and seemed to last for hours and the layer upon layer of stars and shooting stars, we never wanted to leave the place. Even with all the terrific adventures of the Big Island beckoning us. The few stormy days, with the swells crashing high over the cliffs, were as exciting as the sunny days were luxurious.

To top it off, owners Dan and Melanie are super friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. They made sure we knew about all the most interesting restaurants and the best things to do. They keep the house stocked with everything you'd ever need for cooking gourmet meals, entertaining friends, going to the beach, snorkeling, or whatever. We found everything we needed to have an amazing and relaxing and memorable 8 days.

Perfect place for a couple to retreat

  • 5 of 5

This place is perfect. The view is beautiful, the setting is ideal, and the home itself is in great shape. It is absolutely the best choice for you and your honey to spend some time. The bed is super comfortable, and it's great to be awoken by dove calls in the morning. (I mean, that's outside, not something strange my wife does.)

We would gladly stay again. If you're thinking this might be a property for you, just go ahead and reserve it now. You can't go wrong.

The town of Ocean View is about 25 minutes south on Mamalahoa Hwy (11). There are grocery and hardware stores and shops and restaurants in the area. Continue driving and you will reach Volcanoes National Park, and South Point. Continue around the point and you will eventually get to Hilo. If instead of going south, you go north on Mamalahoa Hwy (11), you will be headed back to Kailua-Kona, where there airport is. On the way, you will pass Captain Cook (about 30 minutes from the house). There is a grocery store there as well as some great coffee houses and restaurants. There are lots of great restaurants, bars and nightlife, resorts and souvenir shopping opportunities in Kailua Kona . It's about an hour and a half drive to Kailua-Kona, depending on traffic. Continuing on the Highway will bring you past the resorts on the Kohala Coast, around Upolu Point to the quaint town of Hawi, and through the Parker Ranch. Eventually you will be back in Hilo. But don't try to circumnavigate the island in one day. It's big, and there is too much to see and do along the way!
