About Melanie and Craig

We've lived in South Kona for almost 40 years and had the opportunity to purchase this property from a fishing friend after he moved to the mainland. The house was built in a slow process over 6 years with the help of a lot of great local talent. We completed the house in 2011 and spend many weekends sharing and enjoying our Milolii home.

Melanie and Craig purchased this house in 2010

Why Melanie and Craig chose Kona Coast

We live on a farm in the subtropical ohia forest up mountain from Milolii and have spent many weekends and summer days swimming, fishing and enjoying the ocean at Milolii. We are very gratified to be able to have a home on the ocean where we can continue to enjoy so many of the activities and beauty the ocean has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Milolii is far from the crowds and noise of city life. We enjoy peaceful walks and the pleasure of time with family and friends. Waking up to the sunrise over the mountain with a cup of organic Kona coffee is a pleasure we look forward to whenever we can get away to Milolii.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow what a great place. Beautiful peaceful place to vacation. I recommend it to anyone wanting vacation by the ocean.

Relaxing Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Hawaii and we chose the Big Island because there is so much to do. We have 5 kids so we wanted a rental house verses a hotel room and this house was perfect! It is an hour drive from Kona, but the drive is unique and enjoyable! You pass little towns and coffee places, beautiful trees and different flowers, plus you can see the ocean for most of it. The road down to the house only takes about 10 minutes and while it is twisty, it's not as bad as some people have said it was.

Melanie and Craig had everything ready and waiting. The house is fully stocked and ready to go. We did have a small issue with the hot tub(Craig had just updated the system but one of the valves wasn't operating correctly). I texted Melanie and Craig came to fix it within 20 minutes.

The pool was amazing! Like I said we have 5 young kids and the pool worked for all of them. There is a good section of the pool that is only about 1ft deep. The smaller children loved playing here, plus I was able to sit my chair in the water and enjoy it too! The rest of the pool was a good depth, and the temperature was refreshing! I could see how it might feel chilly during winter months but we were here at the end of April to early May and it was perfect for the weather. A couple of days we spend just relaxing at the house with a cooler next to the pool and enjoyed our drinks and snacks.

We knew coming out here that we were on rocky coast line but it was definitely neat. Our kids are used to hiking rocks so they were pretty good but if your kids are not used to it, then I would use caution or go to a different beach to explore. Obviously we all stayed close and they were able to enjoy the two tide pools that were there. They could also see the yellow tangs and a couple other fish that you could see by just looking in the water. Craig was kind enough to lend us his rope so my husband and I could tie off and scuba right there next to the house. WOW! It was amazing! The water is so crystal clear! That was such a kind gesture of Craig and I'm so happy we got that opportunity, it was unforgettable.

For us, the house was in a great spot for what we had planned. We knew there was going to be driving since we came to explore the island. The house is only about and hour from Kona, but in between there are so many bays and coffee places to stop at so it's really neat. It was an 1 and 15 mins from Volcano National which we visited twice and about 2 hours from Hilo.

Christmas and New Year's at The Cove

  • 5 of 5

First of all, I have to express gratitude to Melanie and Craig for allowing us to book this house well in advance of our travel since it was a retirement trip for my friend. The house is exactly as described and we found it to be very comfortable. It was also very well equipped. Probably our favorite extras were the fans which provided white noise to cover snoring and coughs (yes, we all got some crazy cough). The pool was a little cold for us to use much, but the hot tub was a delight. We were there every night looking at the beautiful sky. Loved the sounds of the waves crashing. I could definitely get used to living there:). My only complaint is that there is no TV on the main floor of the house. I am a terrible insomniac and would have liked to have a TV during those 1 a.m. periods of no sleep. There is one downstairs, but you have to go outside to access it. Also, two suggestions - have a refrigerator downstairs. Since you really need to stock up before the journey to the house, an overflow frig would be great AND it would be so nice to have a place to stash sodas (and margaritas) next to the pool. The second is to include on the intro to the house, instructions on how to operate the fan/lights. After traveling for almost 24 hours and arriving to darkness in the house, we had a hard time figuring out the lights. Also a complaint that is not within Craig and Melanie's control are the large dogs across the street. They bark at every person, car and sometimes it seemed leaves blowing in the wind. They did take them in around 10 at night so at least they didn't bark all night. As to the location, we loved it because the little village was so quiet and the sitting next to the ocean was magical. But know that it is a solid hour's drive from Kona. However, there are two decent markets to the south. No fancy ingredients, but they had all the basics and only 15 to 20 minutes away (also super cheap gas in the same center). All in all, I highly recommend this beautiful place. Craig and Melanie were great to work with. Thank you for allowing us to stay here especially during the holidays since I know you use it for your family.

Loved spring break at the cove

  • 5 of 5

We felt like we knew what to expect from the pictures and the other reviews, but I have to say the experience, the house and the view were even better than we expected.

The view from the infinity pool was amazing and we loved the hot tub. We were there to witness spectacular sunsets on 5 of 7 nights. We slept to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks every night.

The frontage down to the ocean is a little steep and rocky, but it was no problem for me and my family (2 teenage boys - 14 and 16). The seas were calm enough a few days for us to hop in and snorkel in the cove. There was a sea turtle and a variety of colorful tangs, wrasses and huge parrot fish hanging out there. I'd guess its 15-20 feet deep as soon as you jump in. A couple of rock structures made a ledge for a decent way out of the water. You have to use common sense though, there were a couple days the seas were way too rough. Safety first!

The location of the house was a nice compromise for us since we wanted to visit the green sand beach and the volcano & lava tube on the south and south east part of the island as well as hit some of the attractions in Kona. I believe the nearest store was about 25 minutes south, while Walmart and other shopping was about a 50 minutes north. Plan your shopping and stock the fridge and cupboards. The house has everything you need to cook or barbecue on the Weber, there was even a strainer to make spaghetti or Mac n Cheese. We packed light, all carry-on, due to the full laundry available there. The house really had everything we needed. Fantastic place. Highly recommended!

Wow

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 - kids 20,17 and 13 - spent 7 wonderful days at The Cove. From the moment we pulled up - to whales just offshore from the house - our stay was absolutely ideal.

Read the reviews - the house is a bit off the beaten path and that is what makes it such a treat. Completely appointed and equipped - with a well planned grocery trips - we wanted for nothing. The water was unseasonably rough, so we were not able to snorkel or swim locally, but with the sounds of the surf, the views from the lanai, the whales (we saw them every day) and the gorgeous sunsets, we hardly missed it. The kids spent hours in the pool and hot tub, while mom and dad relaxed.

With planning, the house is a great spot to explore the island. Several beautiful beaches are near by and we fell in love with South Point, which was an easy trip. We made it to Kona to go deep sea fishing and swim with the manta rays (incredible experience), but it is a pretty good drive. We loved escaping back to quiet Milolii and the sound of the surf after our outings.

Bottom line - if you want quiet & a bit of seclusion, this house is perfect. You could not possibly find more helpful and accommodating owners than Craig & Melanie (thank you both so much!) . From getting the rental arranged to having everything ready for our arrival to answering questions during our stay, they were great. To say they went "above and beyond" on the front and back of our stay is an understatement - they really helped get the very most of our short time on the island.

We loved this house, we loved the location and we loved the Island of Hawaii. We will be back!

New Years at the Cove

  • 5 of 5

We spent New Years at the Cove, it was my parents first trip to the Big Island and they cannot wait to return. We were a party of 7 with 3 children and never felt crowded in the house. There was so much to do, between the outdoor games, the pool & the TV for college football :) Our reservation process was easy, and we knew to expect this house to be out of the hustle & bustle. We found the drive to be just as described, and were absolutely blown away by the house.

The kids swam all day in the pool, we enjoyed the fire pit on New Years Eve and had no need to leave the house at all.

We will definitely stay again if Craig and Melanie will have us back. Thank you again for opening your home!

Perfect place for a relaxation vacation!!! The pictures don't do the home justice

  • 5 of 5

The Cove is truly a piece of paradise! It's away from the hustle and bustle of the city and touristy areas. The 'open air' home (which means their are screens around the house near the roof) really did allow us to enjoy the sounds of the surf and the fresh breeze. The cove itself provided great 'exploring' for our teenagers - it can be a little tough to climb down there so make sure to take care.

Craig and Melanie really make sure that their home is ready for just about anything. There were a few things that we didn't think of to get in Kona - but just about anything you can think of it already at the house. They are also quick to help with any issues that may arrive.

If you are looking for the perfect place to relax and get away from it all, this is the place. We were a group of 2 adults and 3 teenagers. Everyone had their own space and we also enjoyed having game nights with the board games in the house. Although you don't really need to leave the house to enjoy your time, there are some great places nearby...

We took a day trip to the Volcano and got to see a clear view of the steaming crater from the Volcano House restaurant at lunch. At night, you can see the red glow of the Volcano from the Jagger Museum. We also visited the nearby black sand beach and got to see a sea turtle sunning itself. Just north of the house there is another great beach (I forget the name, but I did put it in the guest book) that had several turtles that were swimming around the kids while they were snorkeling. Just remember that the turtles are protected so don't bother them or touch them purposely.

It is a steep and windy road to the house from the highway, so make sure to take it slow and watch for other drivers. The infinity pool and spa was amazing and the views from the lanai are so surreal. We couldn't take enough pictures!

Thank you Craig and Melanie for providing such an amazing home for our vacation!
