Water Rock was designed specifically to showcase the incredible natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and to provide an example of mountain area permaculture. The retreat also showcases ever-expanding beautifully landscaped terraced grounds covered with an abundance of gorgeous flowers for the enjoyment of our guests. There is lots of flat yard space for the kids to run around and a great firepit area for nights around the campfire.
Water Rock Garden Retreat is ideal for people who love solitude, unspoiled views, spectacular gardens, wildlife, starry nights and full moons, and the sound of rushing mountain streams in the distance. It is beautiful any time of year!
Water Rock Garden Retreat is located on a 15-acre knoll just outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. At an elevation of 4500 feet, there are breathtaking 360-degree views with a 30-mile view of Tennessee and the great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The property now encompasses a 200-acre tract with a 200-foot waterfall and hiking trails being established to Black Rock - an amazing destination at 5800-feet elevation with a 360-degree panorama as fine as any found within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Retreat's ground floor is open and spacious with ten-foot ceilings and a fireplace. The house has four large bedrooms (three upstairs, one downstairs), including a large master bedroom. The rooms are equipped with two queen-sized beds, one full-sized bed, two twin beds, one twin-sized futon, and two twin-sized bunkies. The house has two full baths, an antique claw foot and a wood-fired hot tub! We will provide one set of sheets and blankets for each bed as well as plenty of towels.
The large custom kitchen is well equipped with utensils, dinnerware, pots, pans, and an outdoor grill. The house also has a 500-square-foot, partially covered, cedar deck and an enclosed crow's nest atop for all-weather viewing of the incredible, panoramic view. A wood-fired hot tub awaits you to step in!
The phone is set up to make only local, credit card, or collect calls. Ask us for the phone number at the house.
The Retreat is located three-point-seven miles up a well-maintained (but bumpy in spots) gravel road. Water Rock Garden Retreat is easily accessible by car, SUV and even trucks with trailers. The road dead ends at the cabin. The road is passable by almost any car except under snowy or icy conditions when a four-wheel drive would be necessary. It takes approximately 15 minutes to travel the road. Cars that ride extra low (such as some luxury or sport cars) may not be appropriate. Ask us if you are not sure about yours.
Located 10 miles from Harrah's Casino in Cherokee and the Blue Ridge Parkway, central to the Smoky Mountains Country Club Golf Course and the Great Smoky Mountain Railway Station in Historic Dillsboro where you will find unique shops, galleries, collectables, and crafts.
Centrally located to Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Bryson City and to Rafting and Tubing in the Nantahala Gorge with numerous hiking and biking trails throughout the area. Enjoy outdoor recreation along nearby waterfalls, hike and commune with nature, float the many rivers and streams on tubes or rafts, or visit local area flea markets.
No hunting or shooting on, or near, the retreat, please. We encourage wildlife to stay in the area. While we love our pets, some pets are inappropriate for Water Rock Garden. If you wish to bring a pet, please inquire when making reservations.

It’s an annual tradition for our family to visit the mountains every Thanksgiving.
We choose a cabin based on the location (we love seclusion with a great view). Typically we never stay at the same location twice. Not this time, we have already booked our vacation for next year, back at Water Rock.
The pictures do no justice at all. The views are amazing. It is almost like you’re in your own little world.
Another plus, there are great hiking trails within walking distance from the cabin. Typically we have to drive to them.
A first for us, the wood burning hot tub! Our teenagers loved it. We don’t have those in Florida 😛
We can’t thank you enough for sharing your “little slice of Heaven” with us! We’re looking forward to coming back.
Thank you so much for writing this thoughtful review. Your words here do begin to capture the Spirit of Waterrock. It is hard to convey through words or pictures the unique experience there. One way is to say that it is located as if in the middle of a National Park at a site you would normally have to hike to to attain, but you can drive right up to a comfortable retreat and have it all to yourself. I am so glad you took advantage of all it has to offer including the hot tub and the hiking. We are so happy you are returning. There have been families in the past that have "made it their own" by returning each year and we are so happy to share.
We had a party of 12 coming from different states.. enjoyed the stay.. definitely arrive during the day if you are not prone to mountain driving ... the owners were great and very helpful, loved the book collection located in the home
I do not often have the chance to meet our guests. I had the good fortune of being onsite when these guests arrived. They were very gracious and had a great attitude after getting mildly stuck after taking a wrong turn on the mountain. Yes, especially the first time you go up to Waterrock, even though it is an excellent road, if you are not used to the experience of secluded mountain destinations, we do recommend coming after dark the first time. We are going to work on extra directional signs this year so if you arrive after dark it will be easy. We also recommend bringing everything you need at least for the first night so you do not have to go back down to town for anything. Many guests once they have arrived at Waterrock don't want to leave at all as it is such an amazing destination!
We loved our stay here. We did have a couple of issues, but the owner fixed them immediately. Breathtaking views and plenty of room for our large group.
Thank you for taking time to review Waterrock and for letting us know right away upon arrival the things you needed us to take care of for you! We always appreciate it when guests let us know if anything is amiss upon arrival so we can take care of it. It was great to be able to meet your wonderful family!
If you want seclusion and natural beauty, this IS the place for you. We didn't see a house nearby until the second day. We could count 9 or 10 ridges of smokey mountains in the distance, in just one direction. We sat on lawn chairs (there were plenty) and talked and drank coffee and looked out into the distance. There is plenty of walking in the woods all around if you like to walk.
A tour guide along I-40 told us there was an entrance to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park just out of Cherokee. We would have enjoyed that, but didn't want to leave the home. We felt VERY fortunate to find this place on-line, sight unseen, and will recommend it to our friends.
The price is very reasonable for this amazing location and the size of this house. The interior is comfortable and basic, and most important to us, clean.
There were no sheets for the smaller mattresses in the loft the first night, so you may want to give the manager a heads up if you are a large group as we were. The manager brought them up the next morning at our request. We had brought along an extra air mattress just in case, so were fine.
The 15 minute gravel drive at the end was not a problem for our two Honda Fits, rental SUV and mini-van. You can't pull right up to the door, so be sure to bring an umbrella, just in case.
If you like seclusion in natural beauty, and a beautiful view, this is it.
Thank you so much for taking time to write this review. I think it really addresses some of the questions people may have about choosing Waterrock and gives them a good sense of what it is like up on top of the mountain! I like your description of choosing to sty at Waterrock instead of visiting the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. If I could explain Waterrock to someone I would say "imagine being at a site in the middle of the park all to yourself but in a comfortable home you could drive to instead of hiking 10 miles". The view from Waterrock actually overlooks almost 30 miles of the park including Clingmans Dome, Mt Lecont and more. We always appreciate when someone immediately reaches out and lets us know if something is needed that is expected to be provided. We always attempt to have things just right for our guests and occasionally fall short and really value the opportunity to address anything at the beginning of the stay.
Breathtaking views and lovely grounds
We loved the sunsets while enjoying dinner on the deck. S'mores every night at the fire pit gave us all a chance to relax and laugh. We will definitely return.
Thank you for your kind review and for being an extraordinary guest!! I recommend returning at different times of year as each season at Waterrock offers something unique. Best wishes!
Gorgeous Sunset Views
This house was perfect for our group of 12. It was a little off the beaten path; which is what we wanted. The directions that the owner provided to get to the house were very clear and concise. If you are at all familiar with the area, you will have no problem finding it. Very nice, and spacious terraced garden property; with a large, beautiful home with wonderful views- especially the master bedroom. The owner was very reasonable, accessible, and helpful with the couple small issues that arose. We would definitely stay here again!
