A Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this cabin and its location in Maggie Valley. Although there were only three of us, the cabin could have accommodated many more. So much so that we plan to return with more of our family members soon.

The cabin is immaculate and well decorated. The master bed was so comfy that we joked about finding a way to take it home with us. We really enjoyed drinking coffee on the deck each morning and playing pool each evening. We used the grill to cook dinner a couple of nights and the kitchen had everything we needed to make our Easter dinner. The hot tub and bon fire area was used nightly by our teenage daughter.

The cabin was well stocked with cleaning items, toilet paper and plenty of towels. Although earlier reviewers complained about having to dispose of their own garbage, that has changed. We were able to leave two bags behind and had the option to pay for the disposal of additional bags if needed. While the driveway was steep, that was to be expected as we were in the mountains. We actually rather enjoyed driving it and our small suv had no trouble at all.

Although Maggie Valley is a sleepy town in April, we were never without things to do. We went hiking, visited Gatlinburg, drove the Blue Ridge Parkway, went zip lining and visited the Biltmore Mansion. There was much to do and just not enough time to do it all.

This rental is superb and we highly recommend it. Can’t wait to visit again!

Beautiful mountain setting for a fun getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Rusty Elk! It had everything we needed! Beds were very comfortable. Our boys(8,9,11) had the bunk room to themselves and thought that was great. We all had fun playing pool and air hockey. The hot tub was relaxing with a nice view. Loved the covered porches and porch swings! Plenty of room to spread out. Gas grill was great for our resident grilled. This house is so adorably decorated! We loved all of the hooks in the bathroom and basement for towels, jackets, etc. tankless water heater meant we never ran out of hot water. Very close to town and skiing! We would definitely stay here again!

clean, comfortable, convenient and complete

  • 5 of 5

The Rusty Elk is one of the nicest properties I’ve rented. It’s nestled away, but just a couple of minutes from the ski resort and from the town of Maggie Valley. Smokey Mtn. Nat’l Park was a short 30 drive to the visitor center. The cabin had everything one could need. It was very well laid out, with the bunk room downstairs off of the tv (complete w kitchenette) and game rooms. The laundry was downstairs as well, off of the tv area and had a half bath. The queen and king bedrooms upstairs were comfortable and the linens were fresh and clean. It was a perfect set up to allow the kids to bunk up and give the adults quiet space. It would also work well if one family needed to stay upstairs and another down.

We did bring all our food from home, including spices. The kitchen was organized and offered all necessary cookware, including Tupperware storage and an outdoor grill. While we brought our own, it was nice to see that dish detergent, soap, trash bags and cleaning supplies were offered (bring your own coffee filters)! The only downside is that you must plan to pack out your own trash. The porches upstairs and down offered comfortable seating and beautiful views. While we didn’t use the fire pit, it was very well laid out and just off the far porch.

My son, 4, said that he could just stay and live there....

Great House with even more potential

  • 4 of 5

We stayed over a long weekend in January 2018. Valerie the property manager was nice and extremely responsive. I am hoping she takes the feedback to make the property a 5 star rental. OVERALL, the rental is in a great location, extremely well decorated, very comfortable, and homey. The driveway was a bit scary to drive in during the snow, even with some salt. It is a very long driveway and took a few trips up and back to the the salt bin. But the snow is certainly out of the rentals hands and a primary reason we went to Cataloochee. If there is no snow in the forecast, there is no proble. A few things that could be improved, however, are 1. providing SPA towels so the guests don't have to use the bath towels, 2. provide shampoo, conditioner, and soap, 3. Provide better quality toilet paper (even a 2ply isn't much more expensive), 4. Put in the arced shower curtain holder, which really give more room to a small tub shower, 5. Install a keypad so the guests can unload the car into the house at the same level (especially when it is cold) , and 6. Include some firewood along with the starter log. Lastly, and the main reason for not giving 5 stars was the trash responsibility. There is no trash service and we were responsible for dropping the trash off at the dump over 13 miles away.
