Guestbook comments from the owner

Your house had all the right elements for a mountain house.... spectacular view of the creek, wonderful porches, great beds and bed linens, loved your upscale mountain decor and openness of the whole place! The kids had fine time in the privacy of their lower level space. Hope they didnt do too much damage to ping pong and pool table. Great walking trails and close to town.Loved the shopping!

We'll be back!

Beautiful home on the creek!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The house was perfect for my entire family. The house sits on a running river that you can see and hear from the house. We opened all the French Doors and the breeze was amazing. The house was clean and spotless. It is very close to downtown, hiking, and restaurants. Overall we had loved it, and would definitely go back!

On the Rocks was charming, convenient to town and felt like home!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled with three adults and two children (ages 11 and 7) for a four night getaway to Highlands. The house is very convenient to town, Whiteside Mountain and many waterfalls in the area. The house was very clean and had plenty of rooms. It felt like our home. It had nice furniture, comfortable beds, and a lot of amenities(cookware, condiments, hand soap, toilet paper, Wi-Fi, etc) We had fun playing board games and pool and even taught the kids how to play poker at the card table. Our favorite part of the house were the screened in porches where we ate meals while listening to the water flow in the relaxing. We enjoyed a fire down by the creek every night and made s’mores while relaxing in the hammock and sitting in the chairs. The owner was friendly and easy to communicate with if needed. I highly recommend this house for families. We will be back again. Everyone voted that we do not want to try another house and want to be first on the list if it ever comes up for sale! :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review 'On-The-Rocks'. It's true, it is a lot of space for only 2 people but none the less what could we have done differently to have made your trip special enough for a 5 star rating?

Great house and location, but full of mildew

  • 3 of 5

The house, location, and furnishings are all great. Kitchen is well equipped and the porch overlooking the river is wonderful. We used the fire pit one night, which was thoughtfully stacked with wood and located on the banks of the river with mini rapid. Unfortunately the house is in a very shady location and built on the side of a hill overlooking the river. The basement and first floors were very damp and musty and smelled strongly of mildew, which both my son and I are highly allergic to. Owners should strongly consider placing dehumidifiers on these floors. We kept the doors and windows open to try to air it out, but the mildew had permeated all of the furnishings. In addition, I feel that all quilts and bed coverings should be washed between guests - I knew that they hadn't been due to the stains on them. The beds had duvets on them with no covers, which is really gross to me. We were hoping to have found a place that we could rent each month, but unfortunately not.

Owner's Response: I m very sorry you did not find our little river house/ "On-The-Rocks" to your liking. My management team and I work very hard to make our guests' visits 'over the top' enjoyable and comfortable. Highlands, NC is located in a rain forest so this cottage overlooking the 'little river' and surrounded by trees can sometimes feel damp particularly when there is a lot of precipitation. Our white duvets on each bed are down alternative and are washed regularly so do not require covers. You re in the mountains surrounded by nature so during daylight hours I encourage my guests to throw open the 3 sets of French doors on both wrap around porch floors and embrace the wonderful out of doors! I will respect your concern regarding the lower level dampness as constructive criticism and investigate installing a dehumidfier in that area.
