Lots of maps & guides for planning hiking, bike and kayak trips. Wi-fi, unlimited national long-distance. 40-in. flatscreen smart TV with 70 cable channels. TV will directly access your accounts for Netflix, Hulu, etc. 3 kayaks; solo lake canoe (you need crossbars on car to carry). Within 5-minute drive of swimming, put-in places for kayaks. About Martha Graham

Hello, all. To introduce myself--Martha Graham: As a sophomore in high school, I arrived in Princeton, New Jersey, where I met my husband and which I still consider to be "where I grew up." After a short stint in the Marine Corps, my husband Allen spent his career in NASA, first in Washington, DC and then in Langley, VA. I raised our 3 children and then taught French and English in high school and community college. Allen died in 2001; I am now semi-retired but work part-time for the state museums in Jamestown and Yorktown, VA, teaching kids about the colonial era and the Revolutionary War.

In the 1970s, our three related families banded together to build and enjoy a log-cabin kit on 10 acres. (I don't mean we hired contractors; we swung hammers!) As the children married, we outgrew the house, and in 2007 we split the land and I built Quietside next door to the original house. Older and perhaps wiser, I let someone else do the building this time. Since I still live in Virginia, Quietside was designed on the back of an envelope and built by email. John the builder is a master of wood. He and his crew build one house at a time and use techniques that go back hundreds of years. (The frame is mortise and tenon--no nails.) Here we still gather every summer to revisit favorite places and, believe it or not, still to explore new ones after all these years. Although the older generation, now in our 60s and 70s, usually leave the most challenging trails to our "kids" who are in their 40s and 50s, we are still enthusiastic hikers, climbers and kayakers, not to mention enthusiastic cooks and explorers of the restaurant scene. So Quietside is not "just a rental." It is a house we love and use, and we like our kitchen equipment complete, our linens decent and our beds comfortable. We also love to share our discoveries with you, our guests. Come and see!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you, everything was wonderful! The house was spotless and very comfortable. Everything we needed were provided for and well supplied. I had never been inside a timber frame home before and I just loved the fragrance whenever I entered the house. The woodsy setting was lovely, too. Also your water tasted good, always ice cold right from the tap...the best! Yes, it was perfection.

Perfect vacation cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Quietside. It was the perfect place to relax in the Maine woods, yet close enough to the attractions of Mount Desert Island, so that we never had to go very far for hiking or exploring the sites of the island. The cottage is in perfect condition, roomy, and well-equipped. A terrific place to stay!

A great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Quietside is a lovely and comfortable home, and very well cared for. Everything was immaculate upon our arrival and we were comfortable our entire stay. Martha, the owner, was very responsive regarding the couple of questions that came up while we were there. The kitchen is well supplied, the beds were extremely comfortable, and everything was clean. The house itself is beautiful and nicely decorated. This was our first time renting a vacation house and it couldn't have been a better experience.

Wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

Quietside is a wonderful house in excellent condition in a perfect location. We spent two weeks at the place and felt at home throughout. The house is centrally located on Mount Desert Island so it is very close to Long Pond and some of the hiking trails on the west side of the island. Very close to Southwest Harbor and not a bad ride to Bar Harbor. It has the feel of a cabin in the woods, yet all the appointments are new and modern. Everything was as advertised and I hope my family can return some day soon.

Perfect Stay in Bar Harbor/MDI

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect stay in Martha's cottage. It was just right for our family of four. Everything is so well kept, the beds are incredibly comfy, the wrap around porch was great for eating and stargazing, and it is in an amazingly quiet location. This is the perfect retreat in the woods, but with all the necessary comforts. We've stayed in the Bar Harbor area, Mount Desert Island, many times and rented a number of places. I'm quite picky and I have to say that Quietside was by far my favorite! I can't imagine that anyone would be unhappy here. The cottage is situated between Somesville and Southwest Harbor, in my opinion the perfect place. It is about a 15-20 minute drive to Bar Harbor, and depending on what part of Acadia you are interested in hiking and exploring, 5-20 minutes away, yet away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Bar Harbor. We could enjoy the quiet of the cottage, be close to all our favorite hiking spots, and still make it into Bar Harbor for dinner.

There is an amazing variety of activities for all ages on Mount Desert Island. Acadia National Park rangers offer nature, seacoast and wildlife programs for adults and children. A fifty-mile network of gravel-surfaced carriage roads is perfect for jogging, walking, or cycling. The 20-mile Park Loop Road is one of the great scenic roads of our nation. Get up early and bike it. Mountain trails range from child-friendly to challenging. Swim at Sand Beach on the ocean if you dare, but there are warmer life guarded lake beaches or scenic swimming from the rocks of Echo Lake. Take a ferry to Little Cranberry Island, tour the museum and have lobster on the ferry dock. Explore wonderful gardens. Don't forget tea and popovers on the lawn at the Jordan Pond House. Kayak Somes Sound or Pretty Marsh; you may find seals or eagles. Play golf or tennis, go shopping in Bar Harbor, attend a band concert on the square, and check out the Reel Pizza Cinema. Better stay at least two weeks.

Other Activities: Kayaking, canoeing, birding
