About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

AVAILABLE July through August

Welcome to my comfortable and light filled two bedroom/two bathroom flat in San Francisco. My daughter, a young interior designer and my son, an up and coming glass and graffiti artist, are constantly redecorating the space. I love what they do and I think you will, too ! Most recently, my daughter has developed a passion for high quality wall paper and you will see her handiwork with elegant Fornasetti wall paper in the hallway, in the 'blue' bedroom and in the living room. My son has painted one wall in my bedroom, the word 'Reve' (Dream in French), will encourage you to have a good night sleep ! Around the marble dining room table designed by the architect Eero Saarinen are iconic wood and canvas chairs designed by the renowned mid 20th century Scandinavian architect, Alvar Aalto. Our loft-like flat has oak floors throughout and marble/tile bathrooms. The kitchen's modern conveniences include stainless appliances and granite counters. Find us in a peaceful neighborhood with lots of restaurants, cafes, book stores and green grocers. Although you don't need a car in San Francisco, street parking is available in our neighborhood. If you've arrived without a car, ours is an excellent location for easy public transportation to the Theater District, Pacific Heights, North Beach, Chinatown & Union Square and beyond. Three bus lines are within 2 1/2 blocks of flat, two of which have rapid service.

Balboa St., only a block away from the flat, is the commercial spine of the neighborhood and is where you'll find the Balboa Theater, one of the last neighborhood movie theaters in the City. Only minutes away by foot, at the edge of the Pacific Ocean is the Cliff House. Come for drinks and stay to watch the sun set. Only a few minutes away, along the Ocean is the Beach Chalet where you can dine on contemporary cuisine in a restored space decorated with WPA murals. Weekend choices abound - you can become a regular at the world renown Ferry Terminal Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Then prepare a splendid meal at home or enjoy any number of modest or grand restaurants for which San Francisco is justly celebrated. There are running paths overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Sutro Heights. Beautiful Golden Gate Park and Lincoln Park with their excellent museums and natural beauty are either a nice stroll or quick bus ride away. And if you have the chance, less than an hour away is N. California wine country - Sonoma and Napa Valley. Come, enjoy our beautiful City by the Bay.

About Beverly Held

I moved to San Francisco from the East Coast, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. in 1982. A surprise assignment took me immediately to Australia for 5 years. When we returned, we lived in various neighborhoods in the city, always IN the city - from Telegraph Hill to Russian Hill to the Haight before finally arriving here. And this is my favorite of all the places I have lived in the City. I love that Nature (Ocean, GGPark) and Culture (Art Museums) as closeby and easy to get to by foot.

Beverly Held purchased this house in 2007

Why Beverly Held chose Richmond District

I love the light and I love the open plan. This is a very comfortable place to live. I love that my two children have found ways to make the space ours with their art work and design talent. I love being so near the ocean and Golden Gate Park and as an art historian, I love that the Legion of Honor Museum is just a few blocks away and the De Young just a little farther. I love that there are lots of choices for dining - from upscale yet casual Mediterranean fare to any sort of ethnic food you might be hungry for. I also appreciate how easy it is to take a bus and get to all parts of the city so easily and with the Rapid (Express) routes - so quickly !

What makes this house unique

I am so proud of my talented daughter and son who have personalized this space - it is livable as well as beautiful. Quirky and playful yet completely comfortable. I hope you will agree !

Loft like apartment

  • 2 of 5

as you have informed me time is running out I should submit this review now. Ok the pictures of this apartment are amazing, they sell the property but don't be fooled. The decor has been changed in hall way and bedroom painted in pastel pinks, the bedding in this room is white not that when we arrived. The lovely red leather chairs are no longer there, replaced by a wood and hessian chair, also the lovely lounge furniture is covered up. When I asked Beverly vi email about the dinning chairs and lounge furniture her reply was a previous renter had ruined them and the lounge furniture was covered to protect it. I found this comment insulting. I also feel it is false advertising, or trades discription act. Beverly needs to update her photographs to the way a renter is going to find it.

This comment is irrevalent as the garden is not for use by renters, but should you rent take a look at it, you wouldn't want to sit in it, also one of the outer pane's of glass "lounge" is broken. I do have photographs to back all of this up. The area of Balbo is nice just a few blocks up, a nice pub places to eat and a number of shops. There were a lot of sites to see in San Fransico, we stayed for 5 nights from 19th to 24th August 17 this is long enough it was too long for us.

Owner's Response: I was very disappointed and surprised to read this review. In the description of the flat I write "This flat has been the designed by a young interior designer. Some of the more fragile items in the photos may be replaced with more durable items. Comfort and convenience will be maintained at the same or higher level as depicted here." Roy A states that the hallway decor did not have the lilac and purple striped paint as in the photo. That is correct, right before I left for the summer, my daughter asked if she could wall paper the hallway with very elegant wallpaper by Fornasetti, I said of course. And we are both very happy and proud of it. My son also wished to redo the wall he painted in my bedroom. He was about to leave for an internship in Virginia (he is also a glass artist and many of his fragile objects were left for renters to enjoy) and I said yes. The painted wall is beautiful and my son and I are very proud of it. I did not have time to have high quality photos taken of the two spaces before I left, but they are every bit as beautiful as what the photos show - indeed, the Fornasetti wall paper is of an extremely high quality. And beyond that, they do not reduce the quality of the space, but rather to my mind represent an enhancement. Roy A also states that the red leather chairs were replaced by wood and canvas ones. And he is correct, the wood and canvas chairs were designed by one of the most influential mid-20th century architects, Alvar Aalto and to my mind, they go much better with the marble table designed by another mid-20th century architectural icon, Eero Saarinen. Again, the change enhanced rather than detracted from the flat. As for the bedding, I was not there so I don't know which bedding the cleaners used. I did set aside specific bedding for specific bedrooms but the most important thing was that the bedding was clean and the cleaner might have made the decision for that reason. About throw covers on the white sofa and chair - it is not meant to insult anyone, just to protect the furniture.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is very nicely done, clean, has all what you going to need during your stay. Owner is professional sent all info in advance, was available on email all the time and her representative on site was very welcoming and took time to explain everything about the unit when we arrived. The area is quite and clean and is a short drive to all SF attractions. I will surely recommend it to all.

Chic apartment getaway

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was nice, comfortable, and very well decorated. It is very close to the beach and the park so it was quiet too! The keyless entry was easy and convenient. Both Charles and Beverly were welcoming and helpful. Would stay there again if I'm in the city.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This place was a lovely transgression from the slew of hotels we had been staying in. It was so enjoyable to stay here, and feel like we were home. It is in a very nice, safe quiet neighborhood, yet it is still close to many attractions. The owners were awesome at communication, and upon arrival, we were greeted with a friendly smile and a delicious wine and biscuits! It was so clean, and the kitchen would be a terrific place to whip up some meals! We are from Florida, and had no idea where to stay or how to get around, and we were so glad we found this place. Thank you so much, Beverly!! We hope to make it back to San Fran again someday!

The flat borders the Pacific Ocean on the West, Golden Gate Park to the North and Lincoln Park to the South. Golden Gate Park has miles of nature paths as well as the De Young Museum of American Art and Ethnic Art, the Academy of Sciences with its planetarium, aquarium, live penguins and fake dinosaurs; the Botanical Garden and Arboretum. The National Park Service also has miles of nature paths along Land's End and Sutro Park which offer amazing views of the ocean, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. If you enjoy golfing, nothing is more incredible than playing a round at Lincoln Park with its spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. For art fans, the Palace of the Legion of Honor is a destination for viewing European art. The neighborhood is a rich combination of ethnic restaurants - Chinese, Indian and Japanese along with trendy cafes and restaurants. Within a three block radius, there are 10 restaurants and cafes, one of the few remaining neighborhood theaters that show first run films as well as green grocers and a cozy bar or two. At the Pacific Ocean is Cliff House, a destination restaurant where you can watch the fog roll in and the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge. The neighborhood is comfortable and safe for walking any time of day or night. Access to Union Square (center city) and all other city destinations and beyond is simple and quick. There are 3 bus lines within 2 blocks of the flat, two of which have 'rapid' options which whisk you into the city and beyond very quickly. If you enjoy an urban neighborhood with easy access to the natural beauty that is San Francisco and the Bay Area, this location is ideal !
