Rushing Creek, Mountain Views Make Cabin a Perfect Vacation Getaway.
Enjoy the best of both worlds----the peaks of the Continental Divide and our rushing creek. You get spectacular mountain views from our upper and lower decks. Plus, enjoy our creek with seating, picnic table and fire pit---our wireless even extends to the creek. Enjoy all from the comfort of a private cozy cabin set on three acres of meadow and aspens, spruce and cottonwoods.
For outdoor enthusiasts, we're in hiking/rafting/biking country. We're 1 mile east of the Colorado Trail trailhead, and just 3 miles upcreek from the Arkansas River where it has carved out historic Brown's Canyon National Monument.
This well-appointed home has all the amenities. It was furnished with a family in mind, but is equally comfortable for a couples’ getaway. The charming décor is rustic with a touch of retro.
The homey living room has a river-rock fireplace, comfy couch, club chairs with ottomans and a chair-and a half recliner. Two six-foot windows face the mountains. The living room also has DirecTV, DVD player, stereo, a collection of board games and jigsaw puzzles, and wireless high-speed internet which reaches all rooms and even to the creek.
The kitchen is fully furnished with two sets of dishes, pots and pans, bake ware, mixer, crock pots, rice cooker, blender, electric griddle and more. The kitchen window above the sink looks onto the creek and aspen. Next to another six-foot window is a pine dining table which seats eight, and comes with placemats and bandana napkins. Right off the kitchen is a full-sized washer and dryer. All linens are furnished, including beach towels for water activities.
The main floor has one bedroom with a full-sized bed and a full bath (tub/shower). Upstairs is another full bath (tub/shower) and two more bedrooms. The large upstairs master is 20’ x 20’ and has a vaulted ceiling and king-sized bed. The decorative fireplace is set with candles for a romantic escape. The room also has a ceiling fan and a sliding glass door which leads onto a deck with bench-seating and mountain views. The second upstairs bedroom has three cozy twin beds and ceiling fan. Plenty of closet, dresser and bathroom storage space will accommodate your belongings.
Back downstairs, on the wrap-around deck you will find a gas grill and a dining table with umbrella overlooking the creek. On the mountain side is a bench and side table, perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine as the sun dips behind the continental divide. Step off the deck into the aspen shade for the picnic table, fire pit and Adirondack bench by the creek.
The area borders millions of acres of National Forest wilderness for hiking. The cabin is just minutes from the best rafting in the west, fly fishing, mineral hot springs, trail rides and golf. Visit the nearby ghost town of St. Elmo and feed chipmunks from your hand and rent a jeep or ATVs.
Sample both mountain towns of Salida and Buena Vista—the cabin is exactly between these Arkansas River tourist getaways---just a 15 minute drive in either direction. Enjoy the many restaurants, including the Boathouse Cantina, where you can sip a drink and watch kayakers on the Arkansas River. Amicas microbrewery offers wood-fired pizza and salads. Currents restaurant offers good food and live music many evenings. Patio Pancakes is worth the early morning drive into town to join the locals for an unforgettable breakfast. Afterwards, stroll along the river and browse the antique mall, numerous art galleries and shops.

We live in the Kansas City area, and enjoy exploring Colorado. In the fall, we hike trails to mountain lakes and waterfalls, and we enjoy watching the aspens turn golden. During the winter and spring break we ski Monarch, relax at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and return to the cabin for crock pot steak soup. Summers are awesome for white water rafting and enjoying area festivals including FIBArk (First in Boating on the Arkansas), Art Walk, Brewers Rendezvous, Fine Arts Festival, Gold Rush Days and Fourth of July fireworks in Riverside Park.
Owner purchased this Cabin in 1999
Why Owner chose Nathrop
We grew up in a small town, and love returning to Salida and Buena Vista for the community feel. This area has all that a Colorado vacation can offer and it is very affordable. Locals call the Upper Arkansas River Valley the Banana Belt; the geography and weather patterns bring more moderate winters.
What makes this Cabin unique
The cabin lets you get away without being too remote. Enjoy the restful seclusion of our creek. Ready to get active? We're one mile from the Colorado Trail with access to Brown's Creek Falls, and we're 3 miles from beautiful and challenging Brown's Canyon--now a newly protected national monument. Drive 40 minutes north to historic Twin Lakes and experience a relaxing hike to the 1800s Interlaken Resort. O a bit further is the mining town of Leadville; catch the scenic train to 1,000-ft. above the Arkansas River headwaters. Or turn south and take a day trip and picnic to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, an awesome geological wonder; afterwards, cool off at Zapata Falls. On on the way home soak in Joyful Journey Hot Springs where you can watch the Sangre de Cristo range turn pink at sunset. Just over the Continental divide is the awe-inspiring Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

We really loved it here. It was comfortable and cozy. The surroundings are just stunning!
So glad you had a good weekend getaway. Thanks for recognizing that we try to keep our place ready for people who feel a need for some time away---even if it's at the last minute.
We love the views of the mountains from our decks, and warming up by the fire after a day on the slopes or trails.
Hope you head our way again soon.
The house and surrounding area is beautiful. Even with the snow the creek was flowing.
We had a great time with everything we could ask for during our vacation. The owners were very helpful in every question we had. They went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed. Thank you Wolff family.
So glad you stayed with us. We strive to be good hosts, because we've rented places for getaways ourselves and know what we like.
There's lots to do in the area---or sometimes it's great just to hang by the fireplace.
Private, Well appointed, beautiful Wooded area!
My husband and I rented this cozy, comfortable house the weekend of Jan, 13/14th, 2018. The purpose of our trip, was to search for a weekend getaway home, that is easily commutable from our home in Littleton, CO. Our realtor gave us about 20 listings of "for sale" property in the Buena Vista, Fairplay and Salida area. We spent Sunday, driving by each property, getting an idea of what we liked/didn't like, how much our $$$'s would buy, and a feel for each area. Lunch was in Buena Vista, then walking around, looking at some of the retail shops. The weather was warm, (high 45), and a pleasant day to be taking in the beautiful Colorado landscape!
The house has a large wrap around deck, chairs and a picnic table by the creek, and beautiful views of snow capped mountains. The main floor has an open living/kitchen/dining room (with 8 chairs), and everything you need to prepare quick meals or larger family style events. There is a full bath on this level, full size washer/dryer, and a bedroom with a double bed. (I claimed this one). It also has a wood burning fireplace, but we didn't use it. There was plenty of firewood outside. The baseboard heaters were just enough to take the chill off at night. There is DirectTV, a DVD player, and small stereo system. The WiFi helped out with our cell phones, but we didn't spend much time on those.
Upstairs, my husband claimed the large master bedroom, which has a king size bed, (he's 6'3", can't fit in the double bed downstairs). This room has a sliding glass patio door, that leads to a small deck. A beautiful area to read a book, wind down and chill out, and let nature and the running snow filled creek take over. There is another full bath upstairs, in the middle of a guest bedroom, with 3 twin beds.
Highly recommended, if you want a quiet, clean, wooded, cabin feel, and have a need to "unplug", from life's everyday routine.
Great description of our place for your short couple's getaway. We get a great mix of couples and families who want the cabin experience. That upstairs deck with the mountains just to the west is perfect for early morning coffee (we provide of course) or to watch the sunset at the end of the day.
You mentioned you didn't use the fireplace or the fire pit by the creek, but guests like that we stack firewood for them.
Great description of the creek---we slide open the doors some nights and doze off to its soothing sounds.
Hope you consider us in the future.
warm and charming cabin
We really enjoyed our brief time at this warm and charming cabin. The location is delightful, nestled against a lovely small brook with fire pit and comfortable wooden chairs. The house is well stocked with dishes and cooking utensils and has many nice decorations. All was well maintained and clean. We hope to come back this summer with the whole family.
We are so grateful to have that year-round creek. I can't count the number of gatherings by the fire pit we've had down there among the aspens. Between the picnic table by the creek and the table on the deck, why have meals inside?
So glad you stayed with us on your brief getaway. Our cabin is definitely a four-season home.
This area boasts the best rafting in the West. You'll want to go more than once. Nearby trailhead links you to Colorado Trail, 14ers, and alpine lakes. Also, lots of more leisurely hiking trails. Hot springs bubble up close by. Area has several fun festivals--Arkansas River boating (FIBARK), Arts Walk, Rodeo, Pioneer Days. We can send links to you.
