This incredible location was chosen by the subdivision owner as his personal residence when initially developed. This East facing (sunrise side) oceanfront home is located on a double lot adjacent to 200 acres of lush, unpopulated state land. A great living room of 1200 square feet, 18 foot tall ceiling and several sofa groups is a wonderful gathering place. A short walk down a secret path, next to the house, takes you to the oceans edge where you can walk for miles on a lava shelf. There are pockets of black sand and tide pools on the shelf.
The home is owned by two couples Steen and Hanne, and Bob and Kathy.Steen and Hanne were both born and raised in Denmark and have lived all over the world. Both couples live in rural Oregon where they enjoy sailing, gardening, their kids and grandkids, and the University of Oregon Ducks!
Kathy purchased this house in 2009
We have family on the Big Island.
Our house is very private, with a great view of the ocean splashing on the shore. Whales passing just off shore and pods of dolphins to swim with at the black sand beach within a 5 minutes walk. The sunrises get better and better each morning. And the stars at night are so bight you feel as if you can grab them.
This house and it's location was perfect for relaxing and escaping it all with the sound of the ocean crashing throughout every room and breathtaking sunrises from the front patio. It was also a convenient drive from many great activities (snorkeling, swimming, black sand beach, good eats, Volcanoes). The pictures really don't do this home justice. The house was VERY well equipped, kitchen was great for cooking and the outdoor gas grill was a nice bonus! The home was spacious and inviting, plenty of room and comfort for six adults. Also, don't let the water catchment system deter you! There was plenty of drinking water provided and the fill-up station was close by if needed. I recommend to all!
Very private house in Kehena, just a couple of miles from Kalapana, 8 miles from Kapoho tide pools and about 10 miles from Pahoa. Easy to get to lava viewing as well. Spectacular ocean views and nice breezes. Huge family room. The kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped, even with condiments and coffee and cereal. Loved the guitar and bongos. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the stereo and despite the efforts of neighbor Robert, who helps out a lot, we were unable to get it working. Oh, well, had to listen to the waves breaking below - such first-world problems!!
Some things I've had at other HI rentals which would have been nice: ice chest, beach chairs and beach umbrellas but no big deal.
I really can't complain, we loved the house and had a great time. I would definitely recommend this house to friends and would stay there again.
The view from the house was beautiful. We were sent a nice package prior to arrival and found that it needs to be updated as some of the places are no longer in business. It would have been useful to have a washer and dryer available, but overall the house and view were very nice. Majus - St. Charles, Illinois
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The views were amazing, the home was clean and had everything we needed. Only drawback was lack of cell phone service (a landline is available) and slow internet. Still, would definitely book again.
This is a great house for your beach visit. It is somewhat off the beaten path so is quiet except for the coqui frogs in the evening. However the sound of the breaking waves is delightful all day and night! The house has all the mod cons for a stay with everything functional. Drinking water has to be bottled but there is a free tap about 3 miles away and 5 gal. bottles in the house to be filled. As the tap is on the way to stores, gas stations, etc., it's no problem to get water. View of the ocean is perfect and we have seen whales showing their stuff only a couple hundred yards offshore. There is our favorite Farmer's Market in Keaanu on the way to Hilo (well under 1 hour away). Hilo has many stores which provide any kind of shopping you may need. The Hilo Safeway seems to have the cheapest gas on the island except for the Costco in Kona in March 2016. We really like this rental and just took it for two weeks on our second visit. Highly recommended!
This home is somewhat rustic but well-stocked and well-maintained. The view you see in the pictures through the A-frame windows doesn't nearly do justice to the real thing, especially at sunrise. The house is perfect if you want to get away. We didn't check out the local beaches. The ocean waves crashing against the lava shelf outside the house was dramatic.
