Close But Far....

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Aloha and welcome to Hotel Pa'amalu the only one room hotel in Kealakekua Hawaii. Hotel Pa'amalu is a blend of Polynesia, Indonesia and amnesia. Come swim in our warm tropical waters or explore the enchanting tropical rain forests atop Kilauea, possibly the most active volcano on the plant. Plan your day while lounging on the lanai, comforted by the warm gentle trade wind breezes.

You will begin your day 5 minutes from historical Kealakekua Bay, on the leeward slopes of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. The weather is warm, sunny and mild all year long, yes all year long.

Hotel Pa'amalu is not really a hotel, I just thought that was a catchy name. My dad, friends and I built this little house a few years back. I would, how ever, describe it as a small story book cottage, welcoming you to write your own chapter. We are settled just up slope from an old Hawaiian fishing village known as Keei. We are surrounded by many different varieties of mangos bananas and other horticultural surprises.

Hotel Pa'amalu is a fun, retreat, romantic get away, or a brief interlude as you travel through out our beautiful islands.

Thanks so much for visiting, hope to hear from you soon.

Oh, if you come during mango season you may never leave the lanai!

Mahalo Nui Loa,

Charles Cope

Beautiful and amazing place

  • 5 of 5

The charming little house is surrounded by mango and banana trees. The house is tastefully decorated and furnished with great attention to detail. Every morning we were woken up with lots of birdsong. On the veranda, sheltered from mosquitoes, we were able to enjoy the view of the sea at breakfast. Scooby the dog came by every morning and greeted us with a happy bark. The cottage is perfect for a relaxing stay.

Practically in front of the house (approx. 2 min. driving time) is the Manini Beach Park, which invites you to snorkel.

The Pu' uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Parc can be reached in 15 minutes by car.

Charles the owner is cordial, sympathetic and very friendly. From the first inquiry, booking and payment to check-in and check-out everything worked perfectly. We are happy to recommend this cottage and will be glad to come back.

My husband and I spent 8 nights of our honeymoon here and our stay was ideal. The cottage is really nicely laid out and has an earthy cosmopolitan aesthetic. It's set in something like a garden of Eden, surrounded by lawn and a fruit orchard, with a nice view of the ocean between and over the trees. It's quiet and feels very private. We saw a neighbor once and Charles the owner several times, working in his garden. Charles is wonderful. He knows a lot about the island and gardening and was happy to share with us what he knows. His super friendly dog Scooby came by several mornings to jump into our laps. The mangoes were ripe during our visit and Charles gave us a few and the reviewers here are not wrong -- they are the best we've ever had. The kitchen is pretty fully stocked and you can prepare almost any meal in it. The bed is a site to behold and the mattress was nicely firm. I'm not that sentimental, but I teared up a few times the morning we left and I don't think I've ever been sadder to leave a place.

What a delightful time we had at your delightful ohana! The cabin was clean and ready for our arrival. The location is FABULOUS! We love Kealakekua Bay and relished being so close. The view from the cabin made for delightful sunsets. The grounds were so very private; all the trees and greenery attracted lots of birds chittering wildly at dawn. Marvelous!

Kaimalu, Scooby, and Rat Cat were delightful hosts! Even though they were close by and eager to meet any need, we felt surrounded by peace and privacy.

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality! We can't wait to return!!!

All the best,

the Mangolds

Almost Perfect!

  • 4 of 5

'Close But Far...' is in the perfect location if you enjoy being close to Honaunau & Kealekekua Bays, as we do. The stand alone house sits on a beautiful private property among a grove of mango trees and gorgeous orchids. Our favorite part about our stay was the water feature outside the screened lanai (porch). Every afternoon the birds would come and bathe in pot-like many species singing and bathing together. During the afternoon rains it was quite delightful and relaxing. We even had a resident duck take a bath! We saw 'Scooby' the dog, the keeper of the property, more than we saw anyone else. We felt like we had the property all to ourselves. Charles Cope did a nice job of decorating and landscaping in and around the house. It felt very worldly, perhaps because of the artifacts that he incorporated into the decor from his travels around the world.

We would recommend that other guests consider bringing their own set of beach towels with them, if they plan on swimming daily. Although there was a set provided, they never quite dried enough on the clothes line. There was not a dryer available that we could find.

Charles provided the necessities needed to live simply during our stay on the island. We realized how dependent we really are on 'stuff' and how little we really need to be content.

We just regretted that we never got to say "good-bye" to our pal 'Scooby'! We would definitely stay on this property again. Mahalo Charles! We hope that you had an epic surf adventure.

Peaceful Paradise

We found 'Close But Far....' to be an authentic Hawaiian island experience situated in the midst of a lovely mango grove with a view of the Kealakekua Bay. Outstanding! Everything you need is at hand with a Polynesian flare! Beach towels, a local guide book, and some snorkeling equipment are waiting to take you on your next Hawaiian adventure. And Scooby will meet you on the front porch upon your return in hopes of obtaining some of your affection. 'Close But Far...' is located about 10-15 minutes from Place of Refuge, an area with marvelous snorkeling. We returned there almost daily. It's also well located if you want to see Volcanoes National Park. And sitting on the lanai at the end of the day watching the sunset can't be beat! We will definitely return!!
