Close But Far....

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Aloha and welcome to Hotel Pa'amalu the only one room hotel in Kealakekua Hawaii. Hotel Pa'amalu is a blend of Polynesia, Indonesia and amnesia. Come swim in our warm tropical waters or explore the enchanting tropical rain forests atop Kilauea, possibly the most active volcano on the plant. Plan your day while lounging on the lanai, comforted by the warm gentle trade wind breezes.

You will begin your day 5 minutes from historical Kealakekua Bay, on the leeward slopes of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. The weather is warm, sunny and mild all year long, yes all year long.

Hotel Pa'amalu is not really a hotel, I just thought that was a catchy name. My dad, friends and I built this little house a few years back. I would, how ever, describe it as a small story book cottage, welcoming you to write your own chapter. We are settled just up slope from an old Hawaiian fishing village known as Keei. We are surrounded by many different varieties of mangos bananas and other horticultural surprises.

Hotel Pa'amalu is a fun, retreat, romantic get away, or a brief interlude as you travel through out our beautiful islands.

Thanks so much for visiting, hope to hear from you soon.

Oh, if you come during mango season you may never leave the lanai!

Mahalo Nui Loa,

Charles Cope

Beautiful and amazing place

  • 5 of 5

The charming little house is surrounded by mango and banana trees. The house is tastefully decorated and furnished with great attention to detail. Every morning we were woken up with lots of birdsong. On the veranda, sheltered from mosquitoes, we were able to enjoy the view of the sea at breakfast. Scooby the dog came by every morning and greeted us with a happy bark. The cottage is perfect for a relaxing stay.

Practically in front of the house (approx. 2 min. driving time) is the Manini Beach Park, which invites you to snorkel.

The Pu' uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Parc can be reached in 15 minutes by car.

Charles the owner is cordial, sympathetic and very friendly. From the first inquiry, booking and payment to check-in and check-out everything worked perfectly. We are happy to recommend this cottage and will be glad to come back.

Close But Far is heaven on earth.

This little cottage on a small orchid and vanilla farm is a gem. In decades of extensive travel, it stands out as a highlight; I wish we were still there. Quiet, private, comfortable, casual but well appointed with lovely Indonesian inspired furnishings and supplied with beach equipment... In addition, we were surrounded by songbirds and fruit trees, and visited by a friendly, resident dog. We had morning coffee on the front porch with a view to the sunrise and evening drinks in the spacious lanai with a view to the bay. It is a short walk down the hill to any of three community beaches. "Close But Far" describes a unique place of natural beauty that renews one's spirit -- and marriage! It is secluded yet near many points of interest and good restaurants, also nicely equipped for cooking "in". Oh my goodness, we treasure our week in this sweet spot and hope one day to return for a third honeymoon...

Relax and refill your Aloha

  • 5 of 5

We've visited and fallen in love with this pocket of the Big Island, so decided to actually stay near Kealakekua Bay for this visit. Close But Far was an excellent place to relax.

The "Front" half of the house is a screened in porch with a view towards, and including the ocean. We booked it for the ocean, but ended up spending a good amount of time watching the local birds socialize in the zen-style bird bath. We had our 11yo daughter with us, so, she slept on an Areobed on the porch (Camping with plumbing!).

The back half was an open room with a very comfortable bed and a small, but well stocked functional kitchen where we did cook a few times. (There was more, but we spent our non-sleeping time on the porch.) The bathroom was clean, and shower had excellent water pressure and hot water.

Unlike many rentals, this cottage was highly personalised with decor the owner collected during his travels.

At night, there was little noise and you could hear the surf crashing in the distance.

Location-wise, we were able to walk about 15 minutes down the steep, winding road to Kealakekua Bay for sunset. It was a 10 minute drive to Two-Step and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park for some of the most epic snorkeling in Hawaii (saw eels, turtles and a white tipped reef shark.)

Getting into the Kona Area was an easier drive than we expected with 2-3 options and only about 20 minutes to the southern end, 40 minutes to the Airport/Costco/Harbor.

Our family of three really enjoyed this rental and would return as well as recommend it.

Your own tropical garden

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming, well equipped private bungalow in a lush Hawaiian orchard, well away from crowded tourist spots. Our host Charles was great, and greeted us with a perfect mango just picked from his tree. The tropical birds in the backyard fountain were so entertaining we didn’t want to leave our lanai! Snorkeling and kayaking are only minutes away, and local dining options are generally excellent quality and ALWAYS full of the spirit of aloha.
