About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Aloha and welcome to Hotel Pa'amalu the only one room hotel in Kealakekua Hawaii. Hotel Pa'amalu is a blend of Polynesia, Indonesia and amnesia. Come swim in our warm tropical waters or explore the enchanting tropical rain forests atop Kilauea, possibly the most active volcano on the plant. Plan your day while lounging on the lanai, comforted by the warm gentle trade wind breezes.

You will begin your day 5 minutes from historical Kealakekua Bay, on the leeward slopes of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. The weather is warm, sunny and mild all year long, yes all year long.

Hotel Pa'amalu is not really a hotel, I just thought that was a catchy name. My dad, friends and I built this little house a few years back. I would, how ever, describe it as a small story book cottage, welcoming you to write your own chapter. We are settled just up slope from an old Hawaiian fishing village known as Keei. We are surrounded by many different varieties of mangos bananas and other horticultural surprises.

Hotel Pa'amalu is a fun, retreat, romantic get away, or a brief interlude as you travel through out our beautiful islands.

Thanks so much for visiting, hope to hear from you soon.

Aloha......

Oh, if you come during mango season you may never leave the lanai!

One little problem . . .

  • 5 of 5

Hotel Pa'amalu is a very comfortable and welcoming traditional Hawaiian cottage. Even though you are only a few steps up, inside one has a sense of floating in the palm trees. There are all sorts of Asian and Polynesian touches that make this little place very charming.

The cottage is just as presented in the photos. There is an open porch on the front and a large screened lanai running the entire west side of the cottage. Inside is a compact but efficient kitchen, a lovely bath with walk-in shower and a large bedroom area with seating, TV, closet and dresser.

There is hardly any wall space in this cottage because there are so many windows. The cottage itself is surrounding by palm, mango, tangelo and banana trees. And orchids, did I mention orchids? There is a wonderful bubbler fountain off the lanai where, during our stay, we counted 19 species of birds bathing and frolicking.

There is a lounging area outside off the lanai with space to plant the BBQ and grill while the sun sets. The parking is on the grass, but there is a lovely carport to shade the car while it is resting.

The cottage is located just above Kealakekua Bay and about a 15 minute drive from Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and snorkeling at Two-Step. Kona is very accessible and there is a well stocked grocery at the top of the hill. Volcanoes National Park is a nice day trip away.

Charles is very welcoming and accommodating. Scooby, the dog, will do a perimeter check in the morning and evening, will greet you when you come back from your days adventures and will sit quietly on the front porch waiting for the cottage lights to go out for the night. He is a charmer, that one.

We stayed here for nine days in February and as I mentioned in the title there is just one little problem with this place. There is a lot to see and do in Hawaii, but once the refrigerator is stocked and you let the mainland go, it is really hard to leave the cottage behind.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate all reviews. I try and fix, clean or paint when ever its called for. In this particular case, I think the best solution, is to grant, Scooby, our little dog, refrigerator privileges.

Unfortunate choice

  • 2 of 5

We chose to rent here for our honeymoon but we got there late the first night and couldn't bring ourselves to stay- we opted to stay at a resort down the way instead which Charles kindly recommended. The house was not what we expected. It was very dark with curving roads in order to get there and then it was basically in the middle of nowhere. Not close to a beach and a 30 min drive to get anywhere- not ideal for what we had expected and for all the things we wanted to go and do. The cottage was very cramped and warm since it had no A/C and it was quite humid at night-no "sea breeze" that we were promised when asking about the lack of A/C prior to arriving. The doors to the cottage barely locked and most of the walls were not actually walls but just windows or screens instead- not quite what we wanted for a honeymoon stay. Overall, we would not recommend unless you are in an island mindset already where aparently none of those things we complained about matters. Also, we were refused a refund by both Charles and VRBO to put the cherry on top of that disaster. We ended up staying at the Kona Coast Resort which we highly recommend for cheaper!

Owner's Response: I'm very sorry our cottage was not what they were looking for. Most of their complaints, are just what many of our guests are looking for. They felt much more comfortable in a "resort/ condo" setting. We are happy they found what they were looking for, and wish them the best of luck . Visiting the Hawaiian Islands, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is a privilege, and best experienced, if one can try and imagine a "island mindset". Mahalo

Absolutely wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this property for 4 nights and had an incredible time. Charles is a wonderful host (who might just give you some of his super delicious mangoes) and the property is beautiful and private. Really nice views of the ocean from the screen porch and bed, and an incredible array of flora (and fauna, Scooby!) on the property make for a great Big Island getaway.

Excellent location with beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time Hotel Pa' amalu. The location was close to beaches, snorkeling, shopping and lots of great restaurants but still "far enough away" for a beautifully peaceful & private stay. It's located in a quaint neighborhood tucked away from the usual tourist heavy areas. We enjoyed our breakfast on the screened-in porch watching all the birds playing in the fountain while listening to the ocean surf from Kealakekue Bay. The cottage was a perfect size, clean and complete with all the incidentals. Our host, Charles, made sure we had everything we needed and also shared some great tips on the best beaches to snorkel, surf or just "chill". And, as other reviews have mentioned, we were greeted each evening after a long day of activities by the Scooby the world's most friendly dog. It was a wonderful combination that we'd happily come back to again!

This is an amazing piece of paradise.

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this peaceful retreat. As others have stated, it is difficult to leave the Lanai. I could watch the colorful birds that frequent the birdbath all day. The view is amazing and the accommodations are simple with everything you need. Charles is a humble and informative host. I truly enjoyed all of the flora and fruit trees as a gardener myself. We will return. Mahalo.
