About Dakota Whtney

Hello my name is Nick Whitney and I was raised in Berkeley, California. and grew up coming to our family home in Inverness on weekends and summers.

I learned to swim and sail on Tomales Bay with my two siblings Kathleen and Pete we are now the owners of this family gem and are caretaking it for the use of generations to come.

Dakota Whtney purchased this house in 1950

Why Dakota Whtney chose Inverness

Back in the 1930s my father, Jim Whitney, then a teenager, would walk from the village of Inverness the two and a half miles to Shell Beach climbing the hill just north of Chicken Ranch he would crest a hill above the bay and cross the most beautiful meadow. He told his young bride Deborah that if the land was ever sold he'd love to build a home and raise their family there. Fortunately, what had been McConnell's Dairy's pasture was soon subdivided and Jim and Deborah were able to fulfill their dreams. They raised three children there, Kathleen, Peter, and Nick. Deborah is now 97 and still spends time every summer at this wonderful retreat, as do Kathleen, Pete and Deborah's 10 grandchildren. Nick, his wife Elan, and their daughter Dakota manage the property.

What makes this house unique

This rustic family home is a great location for friends and families to just relax and enjoy the view or play a pick up game of whiffleball in the meadow. Our home appeals to every generation.

When you are staying at Whitney House it's easy to enjoy Tomales Bay and the numerous Pt. Reyes National Seahore activities because you are so close to the bay and beaches.

The large open living room and dining area make for memorable family dinners and then it's fun to curl up in front of the fire place and play a game or read. PLEASE NOTE: Gatherings of more than ten people are not permitted.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We only stayed one night but loved the feeling of a Berkeley-style selection of books, lovely light coming in the windows, rustic charm and home-iness. Hope to return sometime with our dog and children. Thanks for everything

Love this place!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here twice because we love it so. Having grown up in Inverness, it's hard to find a place that captures both the Inverness feel, but is also functional and has all the amenities you need. It's very cozy, with a big fireplace and open floor plan. The views are incredible and access to a dock is great if you want to do any kayaking or sailing. We'll definitely be back!

Such a cool house located in a beautiful place.

  • 5 of 5

Like the heading says, such a cool house located in a beautiful place. It was a fantastic place for my wife and I, to recharge our energy. Fun place to meditate, with sounds of crows chasing the turkey vulture, as an odstical to overcome. Truly fun. Deer walking on property. Including baby deer. We are fireplace people and so, we burned a great fire every night. The place had plenty of firewood and it was awesome using the carriage to transfer the wood. Also, the fireplace it self is an AWESOME FIREPLACE. Location, is also fantastic. The immediate area where this house is located, is lush, and covered with fully grown trees and foliage. Friendly neighborhood. We took many walks and enjoyed them immensely. There was a cool boat dock. I did some magnet fishing for meteorites around the dock. ( be careful, some of the boards are loose. )

There is lots to do on the island. Local towns were cute and some had great food.

We stayed for 8 days.

I would definitely recommend this house and hope one day to come back.

Of course, if you come with a bad attitude, you will notice irrelevant issues with the house itself.

But, you go ahead and look past all that and you, will see bliss.

P.s. The owner is very nice and polite lady. Thank you for letting us use your wonderful place.

Wonderful house, sublime location

  • 5 of 5

What a peaceful place! We loved walking on the shoreline, sitting by the fireplace, slurping down Hog Island oysters, watching a doe and her fawns eating and resting in the yard, and enjoying each other's company. Wish we could stay longer and look forward to our next visit!
