'Rooster Cottage' Harborside with Deep Water Dock & Mooring

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms (1 with queen and 1 with 2 twins), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Rooster Cottage has a detached garage and sits on an acre of land at the water's edge with a dock and mooring. The area is a quiet residential area within an easy bike ride to the town of Southwest Harbor (a little over 1/2 mile).

There is a Marina not far down Shore Road (Manset Yacht Service) where there are nice boats for rent (I have never rented from them, but I've never heard any complaints). Mt. Desert Island offers virtually everything for land and sea. There is nowhere like it.

Keywords: “Rooster Cottage” is a simple cottage in the Manset Village of Southwest Harbor. Large windows and a deck extending the length of the cottage offers magnificent vistas of the harbor and mountains plus a deep water dock and mooring for a yacht up to 50 feet.

About Morgan & Sonia Churchman

We have been coming to Mt. Desert Island since the 1980's and lived on the Island year round for nearly 6 years. After marrying in 2004 and having a child 2 years later we now come up for the summer months to our main house in Southwest Harbor. We are active in the community and my wife is on the Board of Harbor House, the local Community Center. We have other rental properties in the area and are well known by both summer and year round residents.

Morgan & Sonia Churchman purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Morgan & Sonia Churchman chose Mount Desert Island

Mt. Desert Island offers us a wonderful place to do the things we like. We sail, tennis, golf, swim in the lakes, hike and bike the hundreds of miles of trails and carriage roads that Acadia National Park (3/4 of Mt. Desert Island) maintains. This is our summer life and where we want our daughter to grow up during the summers. I have older children who also come up for extended stays.

What makes this cottage unique

We actually do not live on this property, but to describe the benefits of this property is much like describing MDI (Mt. Desert Island). This property is unique in that there is a deep water dock that will accommodate sailboats at mean low water and a mooring weighted for 50'+ boats. I have a 36' Morris sailboat drawing 5 feet and have occasionally left it at the dock overnight without any thought of it touching bottom. If you are concerned, call me and I will provide exact depths.

Manset is a quiet village within Southwest Harbor, the center of which is a short bike ride from the house. Here you will truly get a taste of Maine in a modern setting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time last year and are looking forward to coming again this year. We love the view of the harbor with the mountains in the background and having a dock that is deep a low tide meant that our friends could visit by boat without consulting the tide tables. There are few places where we can rent that have that advantage. The house is "Maine simple," but has everything that we need, including dishwasher and washer and dryer. The bathroom has both a shower and a tub, which is perfect for us. We share the dock with two really nice lobstermen so we don't have to pay rediculous prices for lobsters We can'tt wait to return.

Great time at rooster cottage

  • 5 of 5

Rooster cottage was a beautiful little home for us. Not too rustic, not too posh-- just right. The kids loved feeding seagulls from the dock and we even went swimming in the chilly water off the dock. Scrambling down to the rocky shore beneath the dock is rather tricky with small children, but we had fun looking for crabs and finding shells nonetheless.

Southwest Harbour is a beautiful little town to explore. The harbour view from the cottage is outstanding whether viewed in morning mist, bright sunshine, evening twilight, or moonlight. Boats are on their way in and out at all times.

There is just too much to do on the island in one week! We'll have to go back.

A bit of the best of Mt Desert Island.

  • 5 of 5

The quiet Manset location and harbor-view setting was just about perfect for our small family. The well-kept house and property had everything we wanted and needed, and the house floor plan works nicely. Lovely deck for kicking back or dining. Great sunrise views. Short walk to Island Explorer Bus stop and Cranberry Ferry.

Florida visitors who love Maine.

  • 5 of 5

Rooster Cottage is among the very best of the many VRBO properties we have enjoyed. Neat as a pin, well equipped, superior locatiion with extensive, beautiful views of SW Harbor. The private floating dock shared by two lobsterman was an added plus as we kept our rented boat there for immediate access to the Harbor and surrounding islands and waterways. Excellent location just minutes away from the quaint village of SW Harbor and easy, picturesque drives from Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park sites and breathtaking views. The sights and activities of Acadia NP are an absolute must. We enjoyed, eating in, grilling out on the extensive front deck and eating out in the many accessible restaurants in town. We even took in a play at the local theatre up the road in Somesville. In short, an excellent stay in an excellent property and we look forward to returning to Rooster Cottage again soon. Last but not least, owner Morgan was over the top accommodating, welcoming, friendly and helpful; the consumate gentleman and we thorightly enjoyed getting to know him and his delightful wife. A superior property in an outstanding location; you would be hard pressed to do better than this.
