Overview

About the property

2BR 2BA Wheelchair accessible, private oceanfront home half an hour from Hilo.

If you want the feeling of being on a ship without the movement, this is the place to be! Located in Hawaiian Beaches (about 20 miles south of Hilo), Hale Ehu Kai is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath wheelchair accessible vacation rental house on the Big Island of Hawaii in an area with magical views and other beautiful homes.

Relax in the hot tub on the lanai and see whales and spinner dolphins (in season). The lanai is extra wide for outdoor dining, and a lava barbecue is right out in front. The name Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray) is very appropriate for this home as you watch the waves splash against the rock cliffs.

You'll see unobstructed ocean views from the living and dining rooms, kitchen, and oceanfront bedroom. The living area is spacious, with beautiful floors and a tiled kitchen. Ceiling fans help keep the house cool, and the owners have thought about your comfort by providing a TV, DVD, stereo with CD, along with a collection of videos. The home has high-speed Internet and there is a washer/dryer.

The master bedroom offers a king bed, the oceanfront bedroom has a queen bed, and the living room has a double futon. There are two baths, an en suite master bath and a second bath with a Jacuzzi tub. As an extra touch, the house was built to be accessible by the disabled, with a ramp to the front door, wide interior doors, and roll-in shower.

There are many interesting areas nearby where you can go snorkeling, swim in a thermally heated hot pond, and see recent lava flows from the Kilauea Volcano. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away.

Our happy place in paradise

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly situated on the coast. Larger than the photos imply as there was plenty of room for 5 adults. The large lanai is where we spent most of our time enjoying the trade winds and breathtaking view of the Pacific. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks, and waking to the sunrise had us in our happy place for the entire stay. House is well equipped with everything necessary to make this our home during our stay. No issues with holes in screens as previous comment stated. Being this close to the ocean, however, wear and tear from the constant moisture is expected. Still, we had no issues with the functionality of the home. Kitchen is well equipped with knives, utensils, pots/pans, cutting boards, spices, etc.

Although the volcano is erupting approximately 6 miles away, we had no problems with vog, smoke, or anything else related to the volcano.

More importantly, the owners are very responsive and a pleasure to speak with. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your home, we hope we left it better than when we arrived. A true gem that we would love to stay should it ever be available again. We wish you well. Mahalo!

It has serious potential, great bones

  • 3 of 5

Awesome location. Sun where Hilo and Pahoa has rain. Fix the screens and screen doors so that the windows can be open at night, sharpen the knives and get a real cutting board and it’s a 5. Linen and towels were great. Hosts were awesome, view is breathtaking, would totally stay again. We could see the current volcanic activity glow at night!!! Loved it, so peaceful.

Owner's Response: Aloha! Glad Jeff enjoyed his 3 night stay. I'm a little surprised by his three star rating given his comments. When he was at Hale Ehu Kai, there were 3 cutting boards in the pantry-- wood, plastic, and glass. We bought an even larger one immediately on reading his rating, so that it was easier to see. We also bought an additional set of knives, with a sharpener. Screens were already on our to-do list, which is continuous due to the direct oceanfront location. We are staying at Hale Ehu Kai, now, and are enjoying opening the windows every night, so are unsure what he's referring to.
