Lake Mich Beachfront-Best View of the Lake Holland/Grand Haven

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,106 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

It’s paradise on earth. At least we have thought so for the last 30 years. Situated on a secluded, private drive halfway between Holland and Grand Haven, our cottage sits on a dune on the Lake Michigan beach in an area known as Port Sheldon. Sitting on one of our two decks, you look north and see the Port Sheldon pier, the inlet to Pigeon Lake. Looking far to the south, on a clear day you can see Big Red, the lighthouse at the Holland pier.

Looking down and west, you see nothing but sand and water, beachcombers and sun bathers, power boats, jet skis, sailboats. You name it.

And since the cottage is close to Pigeon Lake it’s a great place to bring a boat. There’s a huge DNR boat ramp for anything you can get on a trailer, and there’s a small public launching spot a little closer for small boats or jet skis. Both ramps on Pigeon Lake lie within a mile of the cottage. When the waves are too big on Lake Michigan, you can pull a water-skier or an inner tube on the calm waters of Pigeon Lake.

The cottage itself has two bedrooms, a sleeping loft, and a large bath. As you can see by the pictures, the kitchen, eating area, sitting area, game room is actually all one large great room. It’s perfect for a family with children.

But when you’re there, you’ll want to be outside as much as possible. Perhaps you’ll enjoy the huge outside deck as much as we have. We already know you’ll love the private beach. And the neighbors won’t mind if you want to take a walk on the beach – you can walk up to Pigeon Lake or walk for miles south toward Holland.

When you want to venture further abroad, there are many other options available. There is a wonderful system of bike trails which will take you all the way to Holland and beyond or up to Grand Haven where you can enjoy one of the best breakfast nooks in all of West Michigan (we’d be happy to tell you where it is). We do it every year.

Or you could take a drive to the twice-weekly Farmer’s Market in Holland and stock up on some of the freshest produce our local farmers have to offer. Or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, a short drive up the street will bring you to our favorite blueberry farm where you can buy a quart or two -- or pick your own.

If you’re in Holland on a Thursday, you might want to check out the Holland Street Fair, or perhaps take in a play at the Hope College Summer Theatre.

About Steven Deur

As native West Michiganders, our family has always loved the beautiful summers here, especially when we could spend them on Lake Michigan. Public beaches and camping were the options back then and we took advantage of that whenever we could. When this property came to our attention, we jumped on the opportunity to have a spot and a private beach we could call our own.

Steven Deur purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Steven Deur chose Port Sheldon

We came upon this place almost by accident. We were visiting friends next door and noticed that the cottage looked, at least at that time, as if it weren't being used. We contacted the owners and were fortunate to discover that they were interested in selling. We've never looked back.

What makes this cottage unique

It's right on Lake Michigan with your own private beach, your own private sunsets. It's hard to describe it in words. You really have to experience it for yourself. Plus we have Pigeon Lake right around the corner so boaters can have access to Lake Michigan as well.

Wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at this cottage last June. It was the perfect location and size for our family of 3 (we didn't even use the loft though). The house was very clean and provided all of the kitchen essentials for our meals, linens for bedrooms and bathrooms, and plenty of space to play. The private beach was a huge plus for us! Not all of the houses along that stretch had beach areas due to the grass, but this one had a space for chairs and playing. Altogether it was a great experience and we will definitely return to this house.

Wonderful Michigan Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Michigan and we fell in love. You can tell the owners take care of the property. It was very clean and had lots of little things you may need while staying in a house - especially in the kitchen - which was great. We were so glad we opted for this house on the lake instead of something in town. You can get to Grand Haven, Saugatuck and Holland (we did all three) very quickly. This property allowed us to feel more relaxed and have some great beach time. The private beach area was perfect for our 6 and 4 year olds. Not all the houses had one. Lots of steps to get to the beach but the kids had no issues and frankly my husband and I need the exercise. The views are stunning and every sunset was incredible to watch from the overlook deck. I loved that the whole front of the house had sliding windows so the air could move thru and I could see the views at all times when we were inside. They have air conditioning but we never felt the need to turn it on. We opted to have the kids sleep in the bedroom downstairs vs. the loft since the steps are somewhat steep and my daughter has a habit of getting up in the night. It worked out fine. And the loft was perfect for the kids on a rainy day to watch movies on the iPad, read books and color. They loved it! My husband is over 6 ft tall so the shower was a little bit of a challenge for him as it is a little small but in the grand scheme of things it was 10 minutes of his day. All the other wonderful things about the house and the area were far more important! We plan to return again!

Amazing getaway on Lake Michigan

  • 5 of 5

Perfect getaway for my husband and I with our 8 week old baby! The Deur family was so welcoming and provided lots of helpful info on things to do in the area. You can tell they put a lot of thought into ensuring all of their renters feel right at home during their stay!

We loved having the private beach area to set up our tent for baby and chairs for the day. The location felt very secluded and quiet, yet was only a 20-30 minute drive from several amazing towns like Holland, Grand Haven and Saugatuk. The water views from the cottage were unlike anything we've ever seen-the sunsets were especially breathtaking! We felt so fortunate to have found this gem and hope to stay again in the future!

Perfect Beach Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property with everything needed to spend a week at the beach. In addition, this house is very close to Holland which has a fabulous market and really cute shops and restaurants. I am thankful to the owners that have made this cottage available so that others can experience this location along Lake Michigan. Our family had a wonderful time.

Our best Michigan experience to date.

  • 5 of 5

I am not sure where to begin, but during the reservation process, the owners were very responsive and prompt with communications. We had a late arrival and they were willing to make accommodations for us. But once we arrived, everything was as advertised. The amenities, the home and the beach. Weather was great for us, so we took advantage of the beach and water time. The home is located between Grand Haven and Holland, making quick trips to either was not a problem, in fact it was great.

It is kid friendly, tons of activities, bike trails, etc. We will be reserving this home again.

To the hosts, thanks for providing such a wonderful home for us to stay in.

Peaceful and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was the perfect place for my husband, myself and my mother-in-law to enjoy a quiet week together. We enjoyed the open floor plan with the large windows facing west. The view was amazing, especially out on the deck extension where we were able to take in several gorgeous sunsets. It felt private and remote even though there were neighboring homes nearby. The cottage is clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the gas grill and other amenities. Beach access is 127 steps down, but worth the trek on the private staircase. The landlords were very good to deal with from beginning to end, and were responsive to questions. For days when we wanted to drive into town, Holland was only 20 minutes away. We give high ratings to this cottage and to the relaxing and memorable week we were able to spend there!
