About The Owner

Our children grew up spending weekends and summer vacations on Lake Michigan and we have many lasting memories of time spent together at Driftwood Cottage. We hope other families will now enjoy our vacation rental property while relaxing and making memories of their own!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1993

Why The Owner chose Shelby

Lake Michigan has some of the finest beaches in the world! White 'sugar sand', fresh water and beautiful sunsets. Lake Michigan is by far our favorite spot anywhere!

What makes this cottage unique

Peaceful, serene, relaxing ..... a wonderful vacation spot to unwind, reconnect and recharge!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We all agree that this was our best Lake Michigan vacation ever! The private beachfront is beautiful, the sunsets from the sun deck are awe-inspiring, and the cottage is lovely: clean, well-equipped, and very comfortable. Even a pool table!

Because of the beautiful weather we spent most of our time here enjoying the lake but there were lots of things to do in the area. If, only we had one more week! We definitely hope to be back. Many thanks,

The perfect cottage for a getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at the cozy cottage and really had the perfect long weekend there.

The house is clean and organized and has all the basics you need to feel like you're in a home away from home. The beds were comfy and all the rooms were well-maintained. Kitchen is bright and clean.

The setting is woodsy near the cottage with quintessential beach views over the dune and from the sundeck. There is nice decking and the wood paths to the beach are set up well so that it's pretty easily accessible.

We drove to Pentwater for an afternoon and loved the summer town vibe and Charles Mears State Park. We only wish we'd had more time to explore the surrounding area a little more!

Thanks for everything, Kathy!

Beach Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a relaxing week at Driftwood Cottage. The cottage is just beautiful-- light and airy with plenty of room for a family! The beauty of the house is that you get the beach and a lovely wooded setting as well-- the best of both worlds! The wrap around deck and beautiful wood walkway to the sundeck and beach are spectacular. The owners take such care of the property- as an example, cheery, large pots of geraniums dot the porch here and there! There is a large table on the porch and another table on the sundeck down the walk for enjoying meals outside. A fantastic grill outside and large ktichen countertop with plenty of space inside make meal preps easy and enjoyable. There is also a large dining room table inside-- perfect for family game nights. My teenaged daughters enjoyed the upstairs pool table. In fact, they had they own space upstairs with a bedroom, bath and entertainment area with pool table , TV and balcony. They loved it! We all enjoyed the several windowseats downstairs as well. The house also has a lovely fireplace for cool evenings and the owners even provided us several logs for the fireplace. They are very kind and make you feel right at home! Our beach was very nice. We enjoyed swimming, floating and even some body surfing on a few days with waves! The water was lovely. The full size washer and dryer inside was a plus too. There are lots of other activities in the area; the owners provide a notebook with various brochures, too. Michigan's Adventure amusement park is just about a half hour away. There are lots of bike and hiking trails in the area. Pentwater is just about 25 minutes away for a fun visit. We ate at Gull Landing in Pentwater and all enjoyed it. There are several restaurants in Hart- casual and make you feel at home. We loved the tacos and chips at LaFiesta. Also try the burgers at the Brown Bear in Shelby. And make sure to get some freshly made donuts at Woodland Farm Market on Shelby road-- fresh fruit and veggies, donuts, pastries and very friendly people. We went several times :) . Thank you for a fantastic week!

Clean and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

This property gets better with each step you take after arrival- we pulled into a quiet wooded setting and walked up to the deck, went inside and found the cottage to be VERY clean with cute cottage decor. One of the first things we did was open all the windows to let in the fresh breeze off Lake MI - the wrap around deck is a great place to relax or eat but also leads out to stairs and another deck which provides a beautiful view of Lake MI!! Our family ate most of our meals here to enjoy the breeze and the view! stairs lead you down to the beach where we had campfires at night and played in the sand and water. There are lots of activities in the area, many are listed and brochures provided in a binder provided by the owners. If you have little ones we recommend at least one trip to Country Dairy and Lewis Farm ( petting zoo), we were impressed by both .

We came with groceries ( for 8 people) for the week ( which meant a lot of pre-vacation planning) but was worth it to not have to run to the store. We ate dinner out a few times - once in Pentwater

( there are a few cute restaurants there to try) once at House of Flavors in Ludington and good Pizza on our trip home at Country Dairy.

We trailered our dirt bikes for the sand dunes and there was association overflow parking available to us which was a nice plus!

The owners are helpful and available if needed.

Enjoy your trip !!

Great beachfront Getaway

  • 5 of 5

"Your cottage was adorable, comfortable and had everything we could possibly need. We had a wonderful time at the beach especially with our grandson that loved playing in the "biggest sandbox" he has ever seen. Everything was comfortable and "homey". We enjoyed having all the amenities of home. We had a great time at the dune rides and exploring Ludington. Thanks so much!! We hope we can come back in the future."

Fantastic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Many things to rave about this cottage. There were seven of us and we were very comfortable. Well furnished and lots of room to navigate without infringing upon each other's space. Views from within and outside the home were awesome. On many night we enjoyed star gazing and brilliant sunsets. The view of the lake was especially breathtaking. Water was crystal clear and shallow for about 30 ft out but yet too cold to enjoy swimming. The weather treated us great allowing us to visit many sites and attractions. All were within half hour or less driving time on scenic roads. The owner/manager, Kathy was extremely kind and helpful with her recommendations of things to do and see. Always available in person or just a cell phone call away. Kudos to the owners for allowing others to share this great cottage for their vacation. Cottage is located amongst many trees and evergreens, allowing for a serene and quiet atmosphere.

Dune cottage on secluded beach

  • 5 of 5

We rent in different places around Michigan each summer. This is the first we are considering making a new tradition. First, the house is perfect for a party our size (6), and could handle a couple more. Clean, well appointed, thoughtfully arranged. Second, the setting is very special. Our week we had the beach to ourselves despite other rather grand houses in the vicinity. The dunes are undeveloped and expansive. The sea and stars at night from the lower deck are everything you dream of in a Michigan vacation. The beach itself was small this year, but there is a nice spot nestled in the dunes right above for sunbathing. Third, a healthy array of activities on site or nearby: river and lake kayaking (the short river from Stony Lake to Michigan is gorgeous), pool, scenic roads for motorcycling, bicycle trails, a couple of golf courses, dune buggy riding, and more, plus reasonable proximity to the restaurants and shops of Pentwater, and more. And a very nice host next door with her friendly black cat. A very special, high quality place.

Owner's Response: We are so glad to know our cottage turned out to be the ideal vacation spot for your family vacation! Yes, the water levels on Lake Michigan do vary from year to year affecting the amount of beach along the shoreline. We've just learned to adjust and enjoy the beautiful, natural surroundings "Mother Nature" provides. So glad to know you are considering visiting again as a new family tradition!
