The house on Big Bear Pen Mountain is the perfect get-away for couples, families or even a small group. We have used all in the past and because of floorplan accomodates all easily. The views are wonderful! This is a great house for families because of the flat yard and porches....easy to entertain children. The mountain top is very easy to navigate walking and bike riding. The furnishings are beautiful yet easy to maintain and the kitchen well stocked to fix great meals for a crowd. There are several very good groceries and markets in Highland' we enjoy coooking and grilling versus dining out with a group. Excellent cuisine abounds though...if you decide to venture off your mountain top retreat!! Comfortable beds and complete silence make for a perfect night's sleep. A very special place to spend a romantic get away, family get together or small retreat!

Just fantastic......

We had a wonderful stay at Big Bear Pen. The home is situated several hundred feet above town. We had great cool evenings and mild afternoons. The huge porch and comfortable outdoor furniture was perfect for Perseid, satellite and Milky Way viewing at night; lounging and chatting by day. Our daughter and her husband joined us several days. The kitchen is very well equipped to make meals in the AM. We grilled steaks on the Weber grill two nights. The dining room table accommodates all easily. The breakfast area was great breakfast and a card game. But, if cooking is not your idea of a vacation, the home while secluded is minutes from the great spots in town. The loop that is 'Big Bear Pen' is a great walk; very little but slow traffic, and great vista spots. Friendly neighbors too. The kids took off for daily waterfall adventure hikes while we did more temperate walks within short drives. The home itself has comfortable bedrooms and excellent bathrooms, linens are ample, clean and soft. Full laundry was great drying wet clothes from waterfall encounters. Lastly, the owners provided all the info we needed before arrival and were always available for questions (we didn't have any). This is a definitely a place to which we would return; I think the fall colors would be nice....

Comfortable home with everything you need to enjoy Highlands, NC

  • 5 of 5

We visited Highlands for a long weekend and were within a short drive to everything we wanted to enjoy: hiking, restaurants, shopping, waterfalls, and zip-lining. This home at the top of Big Bear Mountain was perfect for our family of 6. The owners were helpful and responsive before and during our stay. The home is clean, well maintained and private. We particularly enjoyed walking the loop at the top of the mountain every morning. The home is 1.5 miles from town and it can be difficult to navigate the road until you become familiar with the turns. I don’t recommend checking in after dark. Overall, this home is great and we enjoyed our time there. Can’t wait to return in the future.

The home was very nice... even better than expected.

The home is big and comfortable. The location could not be beat. It is convenient to downtown Highlands but high on Big Bear Pen where it feels secluded. Ben is a great host!

Lovely stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed just after Christmas at the Murrays lovely and well-equipped home. House has everything you could want and was even decorated for Christmas. The arrangement of the bedrooms is ideal (2 bedrooms upstairs); master downstairs and another bedroom over the garage gave plenty of privacy for the teens. Hiking and restaurants galore! Thank you for having us!
