About Clara Paulson

I grew up and went to college in North Dakota. Later I married and moved to Montana where I lived for 24 years where I raised three children. I have always loved the mountains and after my children were grown, I moved here to beautiful Colorado to start an herb and tea company, here in Old Colorado City. Because I prefer moderate weather with the 4 seasons, this area is very attractive. Being family oriented makes running a vacation rental the perfect fit and just adds layers of new friends to a life full of wonderful people. Enjoy your stay and be sure to let me know any way I can make your trip better. Share your experience here with your friends and do come back- Beginning in June of 2013, you will also have access to an on-grounds Tea Shop for enjoying a cup of tea on our store patio or to purchase items to take back home. A natural gas grill on the private front patio is sure to make your stay fun while people watching during your dinner or relaxing times together.

Why Clara Paulson chose Old Colorado City

Of all the areas in Colorado I have chosen, Old Colorado City where I decided to make my retirement. The people are friendly, and living here in this beautiful area, is like living on vacation all the time. So many pass through here and having a local business has made it possible for me to revisit some of the same people coming through every summer. It is a delightful mix of all walks of life and once experienced, something to be appreciated and certainly remembered.

What makes this house unique

I love living on this busy small town street where activities and excitement of all there is to do, happens right out my front door. I can walk to work, walk to dine, walk to walk, enjoying friends and visitors any day of the week. I can pack a lunch and walk through Garden of the Gods Park- just another benefit of living here. Everyone owns a dog, and that says a lot for the just type of people who walk the neighborhoods here, friendly and happy- Being just a few miles to either downtown or Manitou Springs is an ideal setting for a vacation or living in Colorado Springs. Just out the door you can visit Organic Herb & Tea Co, voted "Best of Colorado Springs" 2014

The Good, the Bad and the Mediocre

  • 2 of 5

First off, let me say that my husband made the decision to stay here solely because it had three bathrooms and a separate bedroom for our kids. From that standpoint alone, the place was great. I had my own bathroom, my husband had his own, and my daughters shared one. This meant we could all get ready for the day pretty quickly. The one thing I will say about the bathrooms are that none of them had enough lighting. On day one when I was blow drying my hair, the electricity went out in the bathroom I was using and the adjacent living room. My husband contacted the owner via text and the power was quickly restored. However, I was a bit leery about using the hair dryer in that bathroom for the rest of our stay because I didn't want to blow the fuse again.

As it was hot in Colorado at the time of our visit, we had the window air conditioners running constantly. The second bedroom took a while to cool off, but by the time the kids went to bed the temperature was tolerable. The air conditioner in the master bedroom was great the first night, but on the second night it starting making some noises that kept my husband and myself up all night. It was a constant dripping sound and I truly thought I was going to wake up to a huge puddle on the floor, but that didn't happen. Just an annoyance.

When the owner showed us around the place, she mentioned to me that she had just fired her housekeeper. She also mentioned that I shouldn't worry about making the beds because I was on vacation. I took that to mean that someone was going to come in and clean up a bit and make the beds. However, no one did any of that while we stayed there. Our trash was never taken out, so on the last day we had some boxes and bottles piled up near the trash can. I don't know why we had to pay a cleaning fee when nobody cleaned a thing. If I had known this up front, I would have taken out the trash and made our beds - not a problem, but paying the cleaning fee really irked me.

Also, there is a "kitchen" of sorts. It was nice to be able to have two mini refrigerators to keep things cold. We brought cereal and milk so the we could have breakfast at the house. I cleaned up all of our bowls, utensils, etc. after realizing that no one was going to come in and clean anything. There is no table to eat on, so we ate our breakfast at the coffee table in the living room. I will say that the water provided was a blessing since we were extremely dehydrated.

Owner's Response: I have to say, this is the most ridiculous and unfair Review I have ever received in 8 years. Before I address my rude guests, if you are reading this as my potential guest-- please read our 24 (5 Star) Reviews for an accurate description of our hospitality. To our mean guests- When you checked-in, I NEVER told you that I FIRED my housekeeper. I told you I had just HIRED a NEW housekeeper & if anything was out of order (because she is new), to please let me know. Next- the AC unit in this bedroom is new & had just been installed, if there was a problem, you should have let us know, rather than waiting to complain online. You had a breaker go off, life happens- as you stated-- it was quickly resolved. This house has had new electrical, so to make it sound like it has a major electrical problem preventing you from blow-drying your hair is ridiculous. It is truly baffling that you could get the idea that I was going to be your maid while you were here. Vacation rentals, unlike hotels, employees do not clean your house during your stay. I collect the guests’ trash & towels every day. You just had to bring them down to the bin provided at the front entry as I instructed, it’s part of our service. And yes, I told you that you were on vacation & to not to make or strip your beds when you CHECK OUT, my housekeeper will do this. How this welcoming conversation could lead you to think that I was going to make your beds, clean your house, take out your trash, remove your used towels, and set up your breakfast table, is mind boggling. So, you feel slighted because you had to pay a cleaning fee and no one made your bed or cleaned your kitchen. Really? A cleaning fee is for AFTER you leave. Should I let the next guests sleep in your dirty sheets & dry off with your used towels? My cleaning fee pays for my “5 Star” housekeeper after guests depart. Your kitchen comment- it’s a kitchenette. It includes both a medium & a small refrigerator. The table- as I told you- pulls out to seat 4 people with 4 chairs. If you ate at the coffee table, that was unnecessary. FYI, the patio seats 7. After 8 years of doing this, I can assure you that I tell all of my guests the same things. If you were a better listener, maybe you wouldn’t be such a fault-finder. Maybe YOU should read my other Reviews. Vacation Rentals do not supply maid service, or servants. It is good that after a few days you figured out to wash your dishes & pick up your trash. You are amazing-- not in a good way

Perfect location, nice and cozy house and great host.

  • 5 of 5

My parents, sister and I enjoyed our stay at this cozy place with such character so much that we would definitely stay here again. Clara was a great host, she told us of a lot of wonderful places to eat and visit along with reminding us to hydrate with electrolytes. We had a wonderful time visiting with family on the many sitting areas on the property. My mother and sister loved sitting on the balcony off the back bedroom and staring at Pikes Peak.

The location ended up being perfect as many of the activities were right around Old Colorado City and the restaurant just three doors down (Shadow Mountain) became our favorite, we loved the food and service.

It was just perfect for us.

Enjoyed our stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and two granddaughters (15 and 19) stayed here for a long weekend. We really enjoyed this quirky old house (the upper floor is what you are renting). Three bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (all with showers) were terrific and we also appreciated the tvs in each bedroom. House is exactly as advertised, read the description. Clara was easy to work with and helped us find perfect dining options. The house is in a great location as we could walk to shops and restaurants.
