Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 2 baths w/ Queen sleeper/sofa in LR (sleeps 4 to 6)

Our secluded oceanfront cottage is located on Long Cove in Sullivan, Maine, just off the Schoodic National Scenic Byway (coastal US Hwy 1). A quarter-mile unpaved drive leads directly through our 15 forested acres to the water's edge. The 1,100 foot shoreline is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including eagles, ospreys, seals, deer and the occasional red fox. This family retreat has served as a honeymoon cottage as well as a favorite vacation spot for family and friends.

Nestled between two groves of evergreens, the cottage has a wrap-around deck and two large picture windows which allow visitors to relax and enjoy the quiet of the cove. Easily accessible walks along the rocky beach at low tide or following footpaths through the woods are just what the doctor ordered to soothe the stress of a hectic life. The sunsets are exquisite, and on a clear night the sky is so full of stars that it can be a challenge to identify constellations amid the expanse of the Milky Way.

The surrounding area is renowned for hiking, biking, kayaking, antiquing, and visiting superb artists' studios and galleries. Nearby family restaurants that are favorites of the locals offer lobster and other Down East specialties. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are 40 minutes to the southwest, and Winter Harbor and the entrance to Acadia's Schoodic Peninsula are 20 minutes to the northeast. A piece of Sullivan history, the property is part of the Frenchman Bay Conservancy, preserved as-is for future generations to enjoy.

About Susan Lindberg

Living too many miles from Maine, siblings Jim and Susan decided to make this special place on Long Cove in Sullivan, Maine, available to vacation renters during part of the year. Throughout their childhood, the owners spent two weeks of every summer together with their family at the Sullivan home of their maternal grandfather, affectionately known as 'Bumpa.' The current cottage was built in 1971 on the wooded lot across U.S. Highway 1 from the original homestead.

Those family vacations left us with wonderful memories, such as:

• riding with 'Bumpa' in an open 1946 Willys Jeep to the corner store for comics and ice cream before breakfast

• swimming at Flanders or Molasses Ponds on a hot summer day

• collecting shells, driftwood, and colored glass along the beaches at Sorrento

• 'bowling' with naturally rounded stones at Grindstone Neck

• hikes on Mt. Desert Island, Schoodic Mountain, and even Mt. Katahdin

• drives around the Park Loop Road to see Egg Rock, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs

• watching the awesome power of the surf at Schoodic Point

• picking wild blueberries and raspberries for wonderful tastes of summer

• searching for the constellations and witnessing the Perseid meteor showers on crystal-clear nights.

Visitors to this special place on Long Cove will take their own memories along with them when they leave. We hope they will return to create still more for many summers to come!

What makes this cottage unique

The area immediately surrounding Frenchman Bay Getaway is especially rich in artist studios and galleries. Your best guide to these is the yellow brochure “Artist Studio Tour Map” which is available in the cottage. The guide features a dozen studios in Sullivan, Franklin, Hancock, Winter Harbor and Ellsworth, all worth a visit and ideal for a gray or rainy day during your stay.

Two of our personal favorites happen to be just minutes away from the cottage:

Spring Woods Gallery, www.springwoodsgallery.com (Mon-Sat, 9am to 6pm), and

Moosetrack Studio, www.moosetrackweaving.com (daily, 10am to 6pm, or by appt.)

In addition, the Gallery at Somes Sound, in Somesville, Mount Desert Island, is noted for fine paintings, sculpture and furniture. The Gallery website is here: http://galleryatsomessound.com/ .

Peaceful, Private Setting

  • 5 of 5

Many vacationers have left comments regarding this property. Without repeating all of what has already been said, the highlights are the private location, the abundance of wildlife in their natural habitats, the wraparound deck for watching the tides come and go, as well as reading and relaxing. Keeping all of these things in mind, the property is an easy drive to the Schoodic Peninsula and about 45 minutes from Mt. Desert Island. We far preferred the part of Acadia NP located on the peninsula; far less crowded, just as beautiful, lots of hiking. If you have any interest in ocean kayaking, contact Hancock Kayaking very close by. It is a small one person operation, far preferable to the large group settings at other locations. We had an amazing morning spent kayaking on the ocean. Island Cruises out of Bass Harbor (small group (30 person) nature cruise), hiking trails in Hancock County and at the NP, day trip to Campbello Island and West Quoddy Lighthouse State Park are all strongly recommended. As others have stated, the inside is clean, appliances are up to date and work as they should, the owner is responsive and checks in with you at the beginning of your rental. If you are seeking peace, tranquility and privacy, this is the place you want to rent.

Peaceful family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the ocean cottage as a base to explore Acadia National Park and surrounding areas. The cottage was so peaceful and a wonderful break from the hustle and bustle of the national park. We all enjoyed the wildlife viewed from the deck or the living room window. My favorite was listening to the bald eagles chatter in the mornings and watching them fly past or perch out on the rocks at low tide. During high tide we had a seal that frequented the cove as well. The cottage had everything that we needed for our stay (the washer and dryer was a huge plus!) and a wealth of information on things to do in the area. It is a bit of a drive into Desert Island, but well positioned to explore the Schoodic Peninsula. Would definitely stay again if we make it back to the area!

Owner's Response: Thank you for confirming that you found the resources we offer in our Guestbook helpful. There are so many places to explore in the Acadia area, so our maps and brochures can really make planning for day trips a lot easier. Then again, staying put at the cottage to experience the cove's changing tides and the resident eagles, seals and other wildlife is our favorite way to enjoy the cottage, too.

Amazing, secluded water front cottage! Tons of charm and has everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay at this fabulous home. With four kids starting at 19yrs old down to 8 yrs old this Frenchman Bay home was perfect!! It is EXACTLY as described and the view is even more beautiful. EXTREMELY clean and supplied with everything imaginable. We forgot Q-Tips....voila there were some in the bathroom drawer! We were pleasantly surprised to receive a call for Ms. Lindberg welcoming us and giving tips about our stay. She has a welcome book also with additional maps, brochures etc with ideas on what to do in the area. Everything was thought out to the smallest detail! We were about 45 minutes away from Bar Harbor and the main entrances to Acadia... an easy drive. Such a great area! We found ourselves at the local Ruth & Wimpy's for dinner along with heading out to Schoodic Peninsula stoping at a local 5&10 store in Winter Harbor. Loving everything along the way! When at home, we found ourselves staying up way past our bedtime playing UNO, Go Fish and doing puzzles! All of which we found at the house!! In the age of digital devices it was awesome to have some good old family time/rivalry! Who knew UNO could be so competitive?! Ha! We absolutely LOVED our stay and would highly recommend staying here! Thank you SO much for sharing your home with us! We couldn't have been more pleased!

Owner's Response: We appreciate hearing how our guests enjoyed their stay. Feedback helps us know what we can continue to do to make your vacation a special one, and knowing how much you appreciated the "old-fashioned" family-time activities reinforces our determination to keep the cottage low tech in this hectic world outside of Acadia. So glad you found your time there rewarding even in drippy weather!

Quiet and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Cabin is nicely situated near Schoodic Point and the rest of Acadia. About a 45-55 minute drive to Bar Harbor. The cabin gets you into the woods and away from the touristy areas. Love watching the tide come in and out. Susan was very responsive and has equipped the cabin with everything that you need. Lots of information has been complied about the area and it was extremely helpful to have that on hand. We were able to see a bald eagle fly past the panoramic window and land on a tree nearby. We were also able to see the woodpecker and deer. Alas no seals. However I definitely recommend the cabin. The only thing you might want to bring is goulashes so you can walk all the way across the cove at low tide at the site nearer the cabin.

Perfect location for lovers of nature and serenity

  • 5 of 5

The cottage exceeded our expectations. When we arrived everything was prepared for our two weeks' stay at

the clean and well maintained property. The owner provides helpful directions for the use of household appliances and

plenty of material concerning trips, restaurants, shopping etc. Cooking our dinners most of the time was made easy in the

well equipped kitchen. The location is perfect and we liked observing the change of tides. We spent a lot of time watching gulls, cormorants, a blue heron and even bald eagles across the cove.

We did some hiking in the near vicinity and especially loved Tunk Pond. The Acadia Loop offered great views, but the Schoodic Peninsula

Loop was even more fascinating and not so crowded.

We were very impressed by a boat trip on the R.L.Gott starting from Bass Harbour watching seals, various sea birds and several bald eagles.

A 45-minute flight in a Cessna operated by Acadia Air Tours revealed the dimensions and beauty of the region.

We would highly recommend this place and area to anyone who wants an undisturbed vacation in a comfortable cottage surrounded by fascinating sea- and landscapes.

Just what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful house in a great location! My wife and I wanted something secluded yet close to Acadia/Bar Harbor and we were very happy with our choice! Beautiful spot on Long Cove. Smelling the sea air and listening to the loons, gulls, and other wildlife - with very few signs of human activity other than the occasional kayak that went by - makes you feel like you're on a private retreat. When the tide is out you can walk pretty far on the mudflats and marvel at the thousands of hermit crabs that perch themselves on the rocks. Fabulous views from the wraparound deck. If you don't want to sit in the sun, sitting inside on the comfortable couches with the panoramic picture windows makes you feel like you're outside enjoying the view. The two side windows crank open and let in plenty of sea air and cooling breezes. The ceiling fans in the bedrooms kept the rooms comfortable at night, even in August. The master bedroom mattress is memory foam and very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes etc. and the bathrooms are spacious. The wi-fi worked great.

We found plenty of good places to eat right on route 1 in nearby Hancock and Ellsworth, and there's an awesome breakfast place less than a mile up the road from the house. Acadia/Bar Harbor is close enough to do day trips and we especially enjoyed coming back to the solitude of the cove after a day out doing "touristy" things.

Susan was wonderful - very personable and friendly. She gave us detailed instructions on how to find the house and called to make sure we got there okay.

If you're looking to "get away" while still being close to civilization this is a great choice. We loved it so much we've already booked it for next year!
