About Daniel Rabb

Hello, my name is Daniel. I have been a San Diego resident for 15 years now. I grew up in Northern California, and moved to San Diego for college. I now work as an engineer and musician.

Daniel Rabb purchased this house in 2003

Why Daniel Rabb chose Crown Point

This house was bought by my parents and myself when I finished college. I have always taken care of the place and my parents come to visit in the summer to enjoy the laid back San Diego lifestyle

What makes this house unique

This is a great house in Pacific Beach away from the bars and main street. I lived here for many years... I loved the walks by the bay, bike rides to the beach, and lazy days in the big backyard.

Room to relax and play

  • 5 of 5

Nice size house and rare big backyard! Leftover kids toys were great for my 3 & 5 year-olds as was the space to play! Nice neighborhood to jog and walk to Trader Joes (.4 mile). Host was helpful and accommodated us to check in a little early. He brought a new juicer for the orange tree outside and heater the next day when the one we had stopped. Thank you!

Past its prime

  • 1 of 5

We stayed here over Thanksgiving week but we will not be staying here again. The location of this home in PB is great however, it needs some TLC and an Ikea intervention. We are not extremely picky when we travel but this was not the level of cleanliness or maintenance that I have experienced in other rentals. The access code was not provided until I called once we arrived and the smell of bleach was so overwhelming that we had to air out the home for several hours. While appreciating some effort to clean it, there were many indicators that this house is not well maintained. The shower curtain liner had a wide stripe of mold all the way across the bottom and there were no towels placed in the bathroom for our arrival. When I looked in a hall closet, I found used dirty towels in the same closet as the clean ones. There were also random items shoved into a kitchen cabinet suggesting a hasty clean up. Many of the dishes provided in the kitchen are either stained or dirty which obviously isn't appetizing. The front porch light was out when we arrived, many of the windows cannot stay open and, when we did open them, the window sills were absolutely filthy. The beds are rickety and uncomfortable. During ordinary use, the couch in the main living room (the orange one that photographs well) suddenly buckled in the middle. When contacted, the owner acknowledged that the couch was previously broken and referenced a 4 x 4 that he had placed there to support it. With its beautiful backyard, some modest but stable furniture and some touches to make this place more comfortable and cozy, it could be a nice place to stay. Under its current condition, I'm not sure why a damage deposit is required because it is in such poor shape that it's already damaged and broken. Although we have had many good experiences with VRBO, this was unfortunately not one of them.

Great location, a quiet neighborhood, near Mission Bay beaches. House needs attention, though.

  • 3 of 5

Host was very easy to communicate with, before our stay and during our stay. He was also very accommodating in allowing us flexibility in our check-out time.

There were several things that seemed broken or needing attention with the house, among them:

+ One chair’s leg is detached / broken. Too hazardous to use. Fortunately, our senior citizen parent was able to catch himself on the table when the chair wiggled as he sat down.

+ No instruction sheet for the house, unless we overlooked it; e.g., no codes for the two bike locks, and the keyed bike lock appears frozen with rust and would not close.

+ I thought there would be more than one bicycle for a house that holds 4 guests. We had hoped to take a little ride together around Crown Point and bayside paths but couldn’t do that. I guess I should have clarified the number of bikes; I think there were two or three when we rented this house in 2014.

+ Propane tank was empty, and we discovered that just as we wanted to BBQ. Going out for a replacement tank was not really an attractive option; we just wanted to cook, eat, and relax rather than running an errand like that.

+ When we arrived the top shelf of the refrigerator had a puddle of water on it. After wiping it up, water continued to accumulate on the top shelf overnight. After the next day we didn’t notice any more water accumulating.

+ Broken picture frame on wall, top-left corner cracked.

+ Ceiling fan’s light bulb cover/dome is missing; makes light in a bedroom glaring.

+ Two nightstands missing light bulbs.

So there were a few disappointments with the house. We felt let down, and I generally think of our family as pretty casual and not uptight. But with the number of questionable things it appears the house is not getting sufficient attention/care. I think the only truly dangerous thing was the chair, and the host should take care of that immediately. Some of the other chairs seemed wobbly although not broken.

We'd like to stay in this house again for it's excellent location and price (and for the general responsiveness of the friendly host), but this recent trip left us feeling a little disappointed.

Owner's Response: Since receiving this review, I have gone through the house and corrected all the minor maintenance issues this valued guest has suggested. I have contacted the guest since receiving this critique and apologized sincerely for the conditions that led to the disappointing experience staying at the house. I hope that future guests can pick out the positive comments the guest left including: responsiveness of host, great location and great value. Also, consider that this guest is still willing stay at the house again. I missed the mark this time, but a future guest can be assured this property is well-loved and a fun place to spend time with your family.

Great location, excellent host, and outstanding neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

I have to commend Daniel for a great property. This is an outstanding location with proximity to everything. This is a traditional Pacific Beach cottage with all the charm of yesterday and accommodations required today. It's not every day you can get this close to the water and have a back yard for the kids to play in afterwards! The neighborhood and neighbors are great. you'll experience that street parking is a commodity; however, thanks to the length of the driveway, not an issue. you'll also notice that the neighbors are very respectful and will not block you in. The is for sure a return trip for our family.

Perfect vacation home

  • 5 of 5

This is exactly the type of vacation house we love! This is one of the only original homes in the neighborhood that still has a BIG backyard - perfect for the kids! The neighborhood is quiet yet close to everything. We easily found free parking at the beach a mile away late mornings on weekdays in the middle of summer. The boogie boards, beach umbrella, sand toys and beach blanket provided were greatly appreciated. The house is close enough that we enjoyed morning and evening runs to the Bay and beach. It is spacious, comfortable and close to La Jolla and local tourist attractions. Trader Joe's, Vons grocery store, and fresh sea food are just blocks away. Dan, the rental owner, was kind and easy to reach as we planned our vacation but everything went so smoothly with the rental that we had no need to contact him during the week we stayed at the house. I can't wait to return to San Diego and this vacation home!
