Other information about what we provide:

Plenty of kitchen towels, sharp knives, dishware, glassware and silverware. Other items: paper plates, reusable fabric shopping bags (plastic grocery sacks are not available at stores), a cooler for excursions, and 'blue' ice in the freezer.
* Hair Dryer
* Umbrellas--just in case
More details about our home:
* The apartment was built with top-quality materials and meticulous attention to every detail. The lanai is beautiful slate. On the inside, the floors are tile with knotty pine trim everywhere. There is plenty of room to spread out.

Nosotros hablamos español un poco.
We are originally from the Seattle area and moved to Kapoho in 2008 because we fell in love with the area. We love to travel, but also love being at home in Kapoho. When we purchased our home, we knew it would need some modifications and have completely rebuilt it.
With the modifications complete, we feel our home and vacation rental apartment are among the most beautiful in Kapoho.
When we aren't in our paradise home, we are probably out traveling the world. In the summer of 2013 we drove our little camper van, Hale Iki (meaning little home) across the western US. Our 2014 travel included the Panama Canal, taking Hale Iki to Vancouver Island and walking in France and Spain on El Camino de Santiago Compostella (and we completed the 500 pilgrimage!). In 2015 our travel included Greece, Turkey, Oman, Jordan, Israel and the Suez Canal as well as a trip in our van up the Alaska Highway and into the Arctic Circle (yes, it's cold up there even in August). Bucket List Items:
Drive the Alaska Highway - CHECK.
Camp in the Arctic Circle - CHECK.
January 2016-Spanish Language class in Antigua Guatemela - CHECK. Eventually, we will be able to advertise...Habla Espaniol. But we need more school an MUCH more practice.
April 2016 we traveled to Portugal, Spain, Copenhagen, St Petersburg, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Belgium.
September 2016, we went back to Guatemala for some more Spanish immersion and then to Tijuana for a week of work with Esperanza International.
Just in case you ever want to find something to read to help you sleep at night, feel free to check out my 'on again/off again' blog. thewaytokapoho.blogspot.com.
Who knows what the next trip after this will be? We sure don't. Sometimes those last minute trips turn out to be the best!
Susan purchased this apartment in 2008
We moved, from the Seattle area, to Kapoho in 2008 because of the beauty and serenity. After years of working in 'Corporate America', we both decided that this is the best place to retire. We have a huge garden, love snorkeling at the Waiopea Tide Pools, and all of the other beautiful swimming locations in our area.
We are both active in the Kapoho and the greater Hilo area and love to participate in the wonderful offerings this side of the island offers.
Thermally heated tidal ponds are common in this area and some are warmer than others. This is the only area of Hawaii with these, so it is truly unique. The Marine Sanctuary is a 5 minute bike ride (or a 15 minute walk). Incredibly colored/shaped corals and small schools of good-sized fish. Big schools of smaller fish. We have traveled quite a bit, and this is a gem and is easily accessed--what a treat. Or you can bike up and down the coast, with minimal car interference, even though we don't have official bike lanes. Take a walk along the coast, towards Cape Kumukahi, the Eastern most point of the island, and the state.
Kapoho Breeze is located in a private, secured and very quiet community along the ocean. Our kids could safely play in the garden and easily walk to the shoreline: a short 3 minutes walk to enjoy Champagne Pond, its naturally warm and slightly fizzy waters also appreciated by various fishes. Tide Pools is also easily accessible by feet although we preferred the fun of riding the electric golf cart constantly available for the guests: this spot is truly amazing for safe snorkelling; our 7 years old daughter loved swimming among the fantastic colorful coral reefs, a myriad of not less colorful fishes and some wild sea turtles - what a positive first experience with snorkelling.
Kapoho Breeze is also very well located for day trips to the other must do's of Big Island: the active Kilauea crater and the Volcanoes National Park, the lava flows falling into the ocean near Kalapana (plan this at sunset, it requires some walk or better ride rental bikes available at the end of the paved road in October 2016), Hilo historical downtown with its nice farmers market and museums, and some impressive waterfalls in the rainforest. On Wednesday evening, we enjoyed Kalapana's night market with live music and various food booths attracting much more local people than tourists.
Susan and John freely provide guests with snorkelling/swimming/hiking/playing equipment of almost all sizes. The golf cart and two bikes are in perfect conditions and very convenient.
When returning at Kapoho Breeze in the evenings, we relaxed in the outdoor jacuzzi tub, and enjoyed listening to the breeze and the nature.
The comfortable appartment features all what you could need, and even more - for instance, we preferred enjoying the site than watching the hundreds of available videos. Plenty of towels are provided for the bathroom, for the jacuzzi, for the beach, and for the kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped and also includes basic ingredients (that are unfortunately missing in so many other vacation rentals). Susan and John provide guests with a lot of nice advices. They constantly but discreltely pay a particular attention to so many details for the comfort of the guests.
In summary, a fantastic place ran by very kind and attention-full owners - highly recommended. We would definitely come back if we would not be living in Europe, so far away from this little paradise.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Susan and John's house. It was very comfortable and thoughtfully appointed with everything you could possibly need for a fun visit—tons of ocean gear and even a golf cart. We brought our 7-month-old baby and especially appreciated the Pack n Play and high chair Susan provided. Kapoho is a terrific location for exploring the warm ponds, snorkeling in the tide pools and checking out unique local attractions like Uncle Robert's night market and the incredible Kalapana lava flow happening right now. We rented bicycles and rode out at night to watch the red molten lava flow into the ocean. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime event for us! Thanks so much, Susan and John.
Susan and John's home and hospitality exceeded our expectations in every way. In addition to being a lovely, comfortable, spacious home it was equipped with everything we could need. Access to the washer and dryer was appreciated as well as thoughtful extras like a soft-sided cooler and ice pack for day excursions. Our family so appreciated the use of snorkel gear, GoPro, golf cart, reef-safe sunscreen, aloe gel. The hot tub was the perfect way to end off the days; we could even see the spectacular night sky from it. There were fans in every room and plenty of big windows to catch the cooling trade breezes at night. In addition to all the amenities Susan and John themselves were friendly, informative and thoughtful. Thank you Susan for the suggestion of taking in the lava boat tour. The nighttime views were breathtaking.
Thank you so much and we hope to visit you again!
If you are looking for a place to stay where the hosts are welcoming, full of local knowledge and incredibly friendly this is where you should be. The apartment was lovely, clean, and fully equipped. The location was great for the tidal pools and champagne pools (Susan and John also provide all the equipment you could possible need for snorkeling fun). Food and restaurants are located about 8 miles away in Pahoa so would recommend you stop at the local food store when you arrive there before going on to Kopoho. Big thanks to Susan and John for a wonderful stay.
Susan and John do a remarkable job maintaining such a beautiful property! I will never stay in a hotel on Hawaii again after this experience. This was the best 3 nights out of a 12 night Hawaiian Vacation. To experience this part of Hawaii (Hilo side of big island), I would really recommend 4-6 nights for sure. Some of the best things about this property:
Outdoor Shower: that was so useful and luxurious at the same time, especially with only one toilet in the unit. The hot tub and the Jacuzzi tub were also great for relaxing.
The Golf cart: This was great fun for the kids to drive around (ages 11/17), they cruised around the neighborhood exploring and finding coconut trees to climb for an hour or two and a time. This will be your kids favorite part, depending on their age.
Beds and Linens: Comfortable and luxurious.
Location to the Champagne ponds: 1.5 blocks to volcanically heated warm spring lagoon, with some fish to watch even!
The stars: Stars come out early here, no light pollution. They are breathtaking.
Kitchen: Fully stocked with equipment. also some spices. Easy to prepare meals for the family.
The Blu-ray player: I know, who watches TV in Hawaii?! Well, we took a break after a long day of adventuring. The blue ray player features so many movies on file! something for EVERYONE. Only problem is one of the movies we watched was not a complete file, so we are not sure how it ended (made a note in the catalog). I know, first world problems.
John and Susan were terrific and hospitable hosts. Much Aloha here!!!
There were a couple things a person who stays here might like to be aware of, none of these things were bad! just a heads up is all.
-No A/C, but there are lots of fans and the wind keeps things very comfortable so no worries there, we were never uncomfortable.
-Some of the snorkel gear is not in best working condition, make sure to test the equipment before taking it out to snorkel. choking on sea-water makes snorkeling stressful. We had brought our own (Walmart ~$20), knowing the snorkeling here would be plentiful, but the first day we tried what was available.
-Be aware that any kind of shopping is about a 15-20 minute drive, stop at the grocery store before heading to Pahoa.
Thanks for having us!
The Casley Family
Don't forget - Hawaii Island has an active volcano. Drive about 20 miles, through the jungle on a coastal highway to view the lava entering the ocean. We're also just over an hour drive from Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, the historical Kilauea caldera and home of Pele, the fire goddess. You can check out Hot/Warm Ponds, Champagne Pond, and Wai O Pae Marine Sanctuary all within walking, or short biking distance. Because of all the warm springs in the area the ocean water is a little bit warmer here, around 5 degrees F -- not a lot, but for us every degree helps.
