Nosotros hablamos español un poco. We are originally from the Seattle area and moved to Kapoho in 2008 because we fell in love with the area. We love to travel, but also love being at home in Kapoho. When we purchased our home, we knew it would need some modifications and have completely rebuilt it. With the modifications complete, we feel our home and vacation rental apartment are among the most beautiful in Kapoho. When we aren't in our paradise home, we are probably out traveling the world. In the summer of 2013 we drove our little camper van, Hale Iki (meaning little home) across the western US. Our 2014 travel included the Panama Canal, taking Hale Iki to Vancouver Island and walking in France and Spain on El Camino de Santiago Compostella (and we completed the 500 pilgrimage!). In 2015 our travel included Greece, Turkey, Oman, Jordan, Israel and the Suez Canal as well as a trip in our van up the Alaska Highway and into the Arctic Circle (yes, it's cold up there even in August). Bucket List Items: Drive the Alaska Highway - CHECK. Camp in the Arctic Circle - CHECK. January 2016-Spanish Language class in Antigua Guatemela - CHECK. Eventually, we will be able to advertise...Habla Espaniol. But we need more school an MUCH more practice. April 2016 we traveled to Portugal, Spain, Copenhagen, St Petersburg, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Belgium. September 2016, we went back to Guatemala for some more Spanish immersion and then to Tijuana for a week of work with Esperanza International. In February 2017, we spent time in S. America, mostly in Brazil and in the Amazon. What an extraordinary place. Just in case you ever want to find something to read to help you sleep at night, feel free to check out my 'on again/off again' blog. thewaytokapoho.blogspot.com. Who knows what the next trip after this will be? We sure don't. Sometimes those last minute trips turn out to be the best!
Susan purchased this Apartment in 2008
Why Susan chose Kapoho
We moved, from the Seattle area, to Kapoho in 2008 because of the beauty and serenity. After years of working in 'Corporate America', we both decided that this is the best place to retire. We have a huge garden, love snorkeling at the Waiopea Tide Pools, and all of the other beautiful swimming locations in our area. We are both active in the Kapoho and the greater Hilo area and love to participate in the wonderful offerings this side of the island offers.
What makes this Apartment unique
Thermally heated tidal ponds are common in this area and some are warmer than others. This is the only area of Hawaii with these, so it is truly unique. The Marine Sanctuary is a 5 minute bike ride (or a 15 minute walk). Incredibly colored/shaped corals and small schools of good-sized fish. Big schools of smaller fish. We have traveled quite a bit, and this is a gem and is easily accessed--what a treat. Or you can bike up and down the coast, with minimal car interference, even though we don't have official bike lanes. Take a walk along the coast, towards Cape Kumukahi, the Eastern most point of the island, and the state.

Great home, great location, great hosts
We had a wonderful stay at Kapoho Breeze. The space was very comfortable, and the lanai was a delightful place to have breakfast or just hang out. The extras (snorkeling equipment, kayak, hot tub, golf cart, etc.) were great for our family. The hosts are fabulous--friendly and available without being at all overbearing. Our only regret is that we didn't book a longer stay!
Great location, near Champagne pond
We had a wonderful stay at Kapoho Breeze. The house was great- spacious, clean and well equipped with every thing you could need or want. Lots of toys. The warm ponds just a short walk through a very nice neighborhood. John and Susan where the best host. We highly recommend.
Excellent place to stay!
We had a great time staying at their home. It is an excellent location and a beautiful home. They have thought of everything you would need while you’re staying on the Big Island (activity ideas, beach supplies, etc). We highly recommend staying here and hope to stay here again. Thank you!
Repeat visit, excellent as usual!
We had another nice stay in Kapoho. Excellent value for all the amenities! We will be back...
Amazing and thoughtful hosts
Gorgeous home and gardems. Great location. This
Lovely rental had it all. Can’t wait to return!
Thank you for all your thoughtful touches.
We had a fabulous time at the Kapoho Breeze. We chose this location so that we could snorkel everyday and also visit Volcano National Park. At the time of booking, the lava was flowing into the ocean, but now that has stopped so we didn't see that. Susan was exceptionally helpful with giving us an itinerary after leaving the airport. We brought our snorkeling gear with us (although this VRBO has plenty of gear-flippers and wet suits too) and snorkeled at Two step. Then we went on to see the turtles on the black sand beach (Punalu u) and had a sugar fritter at the bakery there (This was mentioned to us by Susan and it was SOOO yummy!)Then we headed to the grocery store in Keeau and off to the VRBO. Side note--if we had a do over, we would have bought all of our non refrigerated goods at the Target or Walmart just south of the airport. The two grocery stores near the VRBO were very expensive. The VRBO is about 15-20 minutes from the town of Pahoa which has a few restaurants and a grocery store and a Longs Drug store.
This side of the island is very rainy so we were expecting that and did not let it stop us because it was still a warm rain. We snorkeled in the Champagne Ponds and the Kapoho Tide Pools. The ponds are excellent for beginning snorkelers. My sister tried it for the first time there and loved it. The stairs into the water make it easy and there are a lot of fish. We took the golf cart to the Kapoho area and parked outside the neigborhood and walked the 1/2 mile to the Tide Pools. The coral in this place is exceptional, and the fish were about the same as in the ponds. We loved the outside shower and sitting in the hot tub!
We tried walking on the lava beds for 4 hours to see active lava but never found it. I guess because it was raining, it was more difficult...so that was a bummer but then we floated in the warm "pool" at Ahalanui Park which was very relaxing. The BIG highlight was going to the Uncle Robert's market on Weds. night. There were many many food options and the live music was so fun. Taking a sarong to use as a table cloth was a great tip from Susan.
We then headed to the Lava tree state park, Macadamia Nut Factory, and to Volcano National park. We saw the caldera bubbling and walked through the Thurston Lava tube. We ate at the Thai Thai restaurant in volcano which was great. Most of the above came from the tips in the wonderful book Susan had arranged for us. I have stayed in many VRBOs and this was the best!
Don't forget - Hawaii Island has an active volcano. Drive about 20 miles, through the jungle on a coastal highway to view the lava entering the ocean. We're also just over an hour drive from Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, the historical Kilauea caldera and home of Pele, the fire goddess. You can check out Hot/Warm Ponds, Champagne Pond, and Wai O Pae Marine Sanctuary all within walking, or short biking distance. Because of all the warm springs in the area the ocean water is a little bit warmer here, around 5 degrees F -- not a lot, but for us every degree helps.
