The Sounder was amazing! My boyfriend and I loved our time here. Not too far of an Uber ride to the touristy attractions! The hospitality of Sarah and Gavin was also excellent! Very prompt on responding to renters concerns! I would highly recommend this houseboat!

Fun Home Base for Exploring Seattle

  • 4 of 5

This was our first trip to Seattle and I was excited to have a quintessential Seattle experience of living on a Lake Union houseboat. The accommodations were as described. I was not expecting a luxurious experience at all, and it wasn't, but it was generally pretty comfortable. We found it to be clean, stocked appropriately for our basic needs and well-maintained. The location was great to get to various points of interest using our rental car and we found the parking and use of the parking pass to be convenient.

From a personal preference perspective, I discovered that sleeping in a raised platform bed that's only accessible by ladder was better in theory than in practice, especially since I usually have to get up and use the facilities once or twice each night. The bed is a full size mattress with walls on 3 sides, no rail on the open side and a moveable ladder. The first night I slept on the wall side of the bed because I was afraid to sleep on the edge as it was about 4 1/2 feet off the ground so I had to climb over my boyfriend and then down the ladder in the dark all while having an urgent need at hand. The second time I woke up I realized that the fitted sheet had slipped off the mattress and I just couldn't deal with trying to fix that plus the climbing over and down and back up all while trying not to wake up my partner and knowing that I wanted to be able to fall asleep again. I decided to sleep on the couch the rest of the night and the subsequent two nights we stayed. That wasn't the ideal way to spend the trip with my bf, but I think we were both more comfortable that way. We toyed with the idea of using the pull out sofa bed but it seemed like it would've been worse since the head of the mattress was slightly angled downward and the mattress was about as comfortable as you'd expect a sofa bed to be. I slept comfortably on the couch though. I'm pointing all of this out not as a complaint against the property or its owners but just to help anyone who may be considering staying here who may have similar concerns.

From a technical perspective, the electrical system isn't strong and we had multiple circuit breaker trips, which was a mild annoyance. The stove also wasn't working properly and some instructions for how to operate it were confusing to me. Luckily we didn't intend to cook there so it wasn't a problem for us.

Overall, we had a great time in Seattle, and the houseboat was fine, but not the highlight of our trip.

Cozy But Not Perfect

  • 3 of 5

On the positive side, the location is great for walking, biking, paddling and public transportation. The neighbors seemed friendly and reasonably quiet. The houseboat is modern and attractive. The owners were responsive to some problems that came up.

On the negative side, the sewage tank overflowed outside which took about a day to resolve. Next, there was a water leak which required another half day repair time. The shower did not drain properly causing near overflow into the bathroom. The power system is undersized which led to multiple circuit breaker trips when more than two of the cabin heaters, coffee maker, microwave or hot water heater were in use.

This space is best for people of average height. We are 6'1" and 5'11" tall and found the bed and shower small. The bed also sags to the center.

All in all, these problems were disruptive to our privacy and relaxation. The owners did not offer to help make it a more positive experience. We will not rent this space again or recommend it to friends.

Perfect Seattle home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

Totally enjoyed the entire experience at The Sounder. Had everything we needed and provides a unique perspective of Seattle / Lake Union. Kenmore Air is within walking distance and we enjoyed the Seattle scenic tour through them. Also great walking / running / bike paths right out side the door of the marina. WiFi worked great - we brought our Apple TV and it worked well. We would definitely stay at The Sounder again!

Loved staying in the Sounder Houseboat!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great visit! Sounder was so welcoming and comfortable, and the location was excellent. We found the houseboat well equipped (though we would have liked to have a toaster...), with a cozy bed, nice towels, and a very functional layout for such a small space. It was so pleasant sitting out on the back deck (love those chairs!), and the view from the upper deck was worth the climb. The location was excellent for us, too - it was a short walk up the waterfront and through the park to get to our son's apartment, and there were many good restaurants within walking distance. They were doing some construction on the road/walking path in front of the marina, but that really caused no inconvenience for us and for the most part we found it a very peaceful location. Hope to stay again on one of our frequent visits to Seattle!

Fantastic stay on a houseboat!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful stay on a houseboat. It's right in Lake Union, and very convenient to the sights of Seattle. The interior furnishing is modern and bight; overall, very pleasant.

It is worth a mention that it is a boat, and swaying/rocking is to be expected; it put some members of our party off at first, but they eventually adjusted. If especially prone to motion sickness, perhaps not the best.
