Affordable quality vacation home listing! Enjoy the trade winds while you view the colorful birds and flora at our home at Kaloli Point, only 17 miles south of Hilo. Our renovated 1980's elevated home has plenty of character with colorful tile and mosaic floors, pine tongue & groove planking, vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams, and colorful ceramic countertops. Home is located on a ½ acre lot with lush flora that includes coconut palms, pineapple and tree orchids. Only a short walk to the tip of Kaloli Point where one can watch the deep blue Pacific Ocean wash up on the lava cliffs while drinking your morning coffee or enjoying a picnic lunch. Full set of ‘Big Island’ reference books provided for planning your island road trips, hiking and palate adventures!

Enjoy preparing your meals in the spacious kitchen using fresh fruits and vegetables available at numerous local farmers markets. Sleep comfortably on high end Serta mattresses. Downstairs bedroom has a queen bed while upstairs bedroom has a full bed with wicker headboard and reading light. High end living room sleeper sofa has a plush full mattress that is extremely comfy. Full bathrooms with large mirrors and hair dryers on each floor. Our Texas 97 Ford F150 has retired to sunny Hawaii and likes to show you the sights if you are staying at our home for 14 nights or more. My rates are generally below the rental rates for late model vehicles available at the airport. Turo actually manages my truck rental so they collect their fee also. Please visit my trucks listing (#28065) at Turo website for more information and quote. To find my truck enter 'Keaau Hawaii' for location, then, most critically, you must enter 6:00 PM for both pickup and drop off. The reason for this is that my truck (and home) caretaker has a day job that makes it highly problematic to meet truck rental customers at airport 24/7. However if you are renting my house he will do his utmost to be sure you are not inconvenienced picking up or dropping off truck.

My desire is to rent my truck to my house guests but Turo forbids me from advertising as such at their website. Therefore it's possible that my truck won't available during your stay at Hale Manu. To minimize this risk you should book the truck as soon as your Hale Manu reservation is confirmed. (NOTE: As Turo insures my vehicle rental, they will screen you so if you have a blemished driving record they may not accept your application. ) Mahalo!

About Ted Powell

Kim & Ted plan to retire to their lovely home in Kaloli Point in a couple of years. Meanwhile we are listing our home as a vacation rental so others can experience Hawaii in a natural setting. Ted enjoys doing home improvement projects and has installed bamboo floors upstairs, redone the upstairs shower and built a beautiful new lanai off the living room. Kim enjoys playing golf and there are many courses on the Big Hawaii (Big Island Golf Tip: When you play golf on a side of a volcano the ball only roles in one direction!). Kim also enjoys salt or fresh water fishing. We are most proud to have recently become grandparents! We look forward to taking our grandson and granddaughter to Hawaii in a few years. Ted enjoys tinkering on his antique cars on the mainland. He shipped over his 97Ford F150 a couple of years back and we enjoy driving around the island with the windows down enjoying the freshest, cleanest air in the world! While at the house Ted & Kim like to take 5 mile walks along along the coastal roads and trails in Hawaiian Paradise Park. He also enjoys reading at the homes peaceful setting and plans on writing his 'bucket list' novel there in the future. He also enjoys driving up to Volcanoes National Park for a Ranger tour or listen to a guest speaker in the visitor center auditorium. He also enjoys visiting the Lyman Museum in Hilo where they have guest lecturers speaking twice per month. When not in Hawaii, Kim and Ted live and work in a renovated 1915 home built in historic Avondale section of Montrose, just west of downtown Houston, Texas. Why Ted Powell chose Keaau

We preferred the wet side versus the dry desert (Kona) side of the Big island. The rainfall keeps the area vegetation lush and colorful and supports the large bird population. There are many farmers markets that have locally grown fruits and vegetables. Our home is on a agricultural zoned 1/2 acre property that offers privacy and a peaceful getaway after a long day visiting the popular island attractions.

What makes this house unique

Our family always preferred vacationing in rural settings where we could enjoy hiking, biking and relaxing in beautiful natural settings. When we visited the Big Island in 2010 we fell in love with the beautiful flora and fauna that varies greatly over short distances and different altitudes (you can travel from tropical sea level to 9200 ft in less than a hour!). The air is so fresh and the aloha spirit of the island residents is infectious!

I would just like to say thank you for letting us stay at your home. We all enjoyed the house and the surroundings. My daughter especially liked the snails and the lizards. We all enjoyed the birds singing constantly night and day. And who can miss the roosters in the morning! We were fortunate to have two nights with very clear sky to gaze at the gazillions of stars. A comfortable home with lots of character

We truly enjoyed our stay at Hale Manu and it was in the perfect location for us. We took some great walks in the neighborhood and got to a great beach overlook. With us feeling a bit unsure if the tap water was safe to drink, we did wish all of the water jugs were filled for our arrival and not expected to be filled by us upon leaving. For that reason we just bought our own bottled water. Ted was excellent with all necessary communication!

Owner's Response: We're glad our guests had a pleasant experience at our home. To assist our guests in becoming oriented to our home we send out detailed house instructions to our guests prior to their arrival. An important part of the house instructions is information on our water system. Hawaiian homes outside city limits have either roof water catchment systems or private licensed wells. 6 years ago we switched to well water when we read that catchment water systems may expose one to a life threatening parasite. Our well water has been tested and is safe to drink. We also have a UV treatment system that neutralizes any bacterial contaminants (not usually found in well water, but measurable in catchment tank systems. Why? think bird droppings!) We supply water jugs for our guests that can be filled at no charge at county filling stations. This is because our well water salinity content is higher than what is found in mainland drinking water systems. Some persons might find our well water taste to be disagreeable due to salinity. (I don't find it to be disagreeable. I drink and cook with our well water) We ask our guests to refill any water jugs they use before they check out. Unfortunately some guests haven't done this. We suggest guests purchase 1 gallon of water in town before they arrive and check into Hale Manu if they think they might find our well water to have a disagreeable taste. We have enough 1 and 5 gallon jugs that once filled at county filling station, will supply the house for 7-10 days.

In Need of Upgrades

The water temperature is dangerously hot and difficult to control. We did not expect to have to haul upstairs five gallon jugs of drinkable water that we drove to a transfer station to fill. Our bed did not have a top sheet. The bedroom window has a broken frame, making using it almost useless. This identifying photo is not anywhere near the rental. You can’t see, hear or access the ocean from this address. We left after three nights of our one week rental.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that our guests did not enjoy their stay at Hale Manu. They were high bidders at a California Rotary charity auction where we have donated a 1 week stay at our house for the last 5 years. We communicated with the charity winner by email and phone prior to arrival to be sure they were oriented to our house. We sent detailed house instructions that covered many items in detail including that our solar hot water system produces very hot (160F) water. House instructions also state that we offer our guests 5 gallon water jugs that can be filled for free at county treated water filling stations on Hwy 130. Our filtered and UV sterilized well water is safe to drink, but salinity levels are higher than typical tap water that might not be agreeable to some people. Regarding the bed top sheet we have tubs of extra sheets in the bedroom closet. We have a handy man and cleaning service on call that could have addressed any bed sheet and window issues (I have spare windows available). We encourage our guests to contact me by email, text or phone if they have any concern that needs addressing (I sleep with my cell phone by my bed). Unfortunately our guests never contacted us during their stay. The picture at our website is of Kaloli Point that is a short 0.5 mile walk from our home. I took the picture on one of my morning walks along the cliffs. There are several trails that are easily accessible from Hale Manu

Our extended stay , (2 months ) , at Hale Manu was an incredibly rewarding and relaxing time. The array of birds coming all day long to the feeders is wondrous, as long as you keep the feeders full of wild bird seed. 80 lbs. in 2 months. We enjoyed fresh papaya, avocados and passion fruit from the trees and vines on site. There are so many different and exciting places to see and things to do in the H.P.P. area that having this home as a base is perfect. Anyone looking to have a comfortable stay in South East Hawaii will love Hale Manu. Joe & Priscilla

Clean, convenient and comfortable.

A nice, comfortable housing in a pretty, private setting a short walk to the ocean.. Fully stocked with bedding, linen, dishes & utensils with all amenities. All appliances worked well. Washer & dryer was a real plus over a motel/hotel. Will request again if we go back to the island of Hawaii.

Only 31 miles to Volcano National Park where there are many trails including one through a lava tube!

Local hikes:

There’s a couple of amazing walks you could take every day here. You can walk the trails along Kaloli Point to view the lava cliffs. Stay far back from the edge as the surf can knock you over - remember never turn your back to the ocean!.

If you want a 1/2 day picnic hike follow the Puna trail at end of Beach Rd to Shipman Beach. Make sure to take a couple of water bottles per person and make sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little muddy. It’s a good hour and a half walk for two fit adults so plan accordingly. Remember to always follow the left-most trail. Trust me, you cannot get lost in these woods. Just keep going until you see a beach and it will be awesome.

Area Dining recommendations:

Hilo Bay Café: It’s as close to fine-dining as you’ll find on this side of the island, complete with prices. This is actually a pretty good place to get a drink.

Kaleo’s (in Pahoa): This was the second restaurant we found that had a Mediterranean bent. Whatever, it also has a cool regional menu with local caught fish, interesting only-in-Hawaii flavor combos, and awesome portions. You’re getting a good value with this menu.

Farm & Markets:

Puna Girl Farms: Do not miss this awesome place. Was once a completely destitute abandoned macnut farm. With 15 year’s worth of love, labor, and pain and it is now a thriving farm dealing mostly with macnuts but happily sprinkled with diverse regional fruits as well. The incredibly warm and open owner, Cherie, is worth the trip to the big island just to hear her story. She’s amazing. Trust us. She’ll have some fruit for sale and chances are her starfruit tree is overflowing and she’ll BEG you to come on in and pick as many as you like.

Maku’u Sunday Market: Go here. Every Sunday. You can find most of your food needs met here as well as some cool local “other stuff”. Treasures to be found here. Great food court too.

Uncle Rogers’ Wednesday Night Market: This is a half-market, half-party. You can purchase beer there ( for PBR… that works..) or you can bring your own with you. You can also get a stone-fired pizza, some lilikoi fried chicken n waffles, some crazy kombucha on tap, etc etc etc. You’ll definitely hear live music. If you know anyone in the Puna area, you’ll probably see them here.

Pools & Beaches:

It’s that beautiful. It’s amazing snorkeling or the most surreal picnic you’ll ever have.

Papalokea - Green Sand Beach: This is one of those places that will not exist forever. South Point Road is located between mile markers 69 70 down highway 111. From there, you can take a left which brings you to a cool parking area from which you walk a moderate 2.5 mile hike up and down some craggily volcanic landscape. At the end of that walk is one of the only 2 actually green sand beaches in the world. It’s, eh… green. It’s pretty nice. The water there is great, swimming is awesome. Also, chances are there is a guy or two with some Polaris off road vehicles to shuttle you there mainly because Polaris rides are pretty fun.

Punalu’u – Black Sand Beach: This is the tourist friendly, definitely going to see a sea turtle on black sand, beach. Amazing snorkeling here. This is mostly a community beach so be respectful of the local folks. Maybe bring some cash and buy their way too expensive cans of coke or something. It’s really the only actual industry some of those folks have available to them.
