1 bedroom 1 bath apartment with bay views, private entrance and stunning garden
One bedroom/ one bath apartment in an historic 1924 home situated in the beautiful Berkeley hills overlooking San Francisco Bay. This flat was remodeled two years ago and includes a fully equipped kitchen with granite counter tops, microwave, stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. The bedroom is large, with a queen sized, bed and beautiful views. The bathroom, which includes a shower but no tub, is accessible through the bedroom as well as a separate hall from the living room. The living room has a queen-sized sofa bed and a flat screen TV. Cable and wifi are included. The apartment has its own washer/dryer.
The apartment is accessed down a flight of steps through a locked gate. An intercom allows the guest to open the gate for guests with the push of a button.
On-street parking is plentiful. Some guests chose to purchase daily parking passes but this is entirely optional.
The unit has an entrance directly onto a garden that was designed by the Berkeley landscape designer Keeyla Meadows. It's pretty wonderful!

About Owner/Property Manager
We have lived in Berkeley for twenty four years. We have two generations living in the house as well as sharing the house with two very friendly dogs. We are originally from the midwest but now very much consider Berkeley our home. We've enjoyed sharing the house with guests from all over the world and have found that we take great pride in helping our guests take advantage of the many offerings available to travelers throughout this area.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this Apartment in 2011
Why Owner/Property Manager chose Berkeley Hills
It has been a real pleasure for us to give this historic home a new life, returning it to its former glory, filling it with energy and reviving its gorgeous gardens. The house is situated within Berkeley's historic Maybeck district (also known as 'nut hill' for the many characters who have lived in this area). Throughout its history, this home has welcomed renowned artists, scientists, and academicians. Many of our guests appreciate our easy proximity to the UCBerkeley Campus (five blocks), our easy access to both wonderful hiking (with great views of the Bay), and great food and shopping. For us, the best thing about this great old home is the magnificent views from almost every window!
What makes this Apartment unique
The house has four units, including one that my husband and I share with our dog and one that my mother-in-law lives in. One can be either very private or you can enjoy some company. Its a nice, flexible environment. The views from every room are pretty spectacular. And everything in the place is new...from the plumbing to the appliances. It is possible, in just about any weather, to sit in your private entryway, staring out at San Francisco Bay and enjoying the garden below. Nice way to spend time in the Bay! We are a 20 minute walk (downhill) to Berkeley's gourmet ghetto, including the world famous Chez Panisse Restaurant, and a 20 minute walk (uphill) to Tilden Regional Park, a vast park that includes walking trails, equestrian trails, a petting farm, antique calliope, steam trains, golf courses and more. This is a gem of the East Bay.

Quiet basement suite in hills north of UC Berkeley
- View is phenomenal
- Neighborhood is quiet
- Apartment is spacious and comfortable
- Kitchen is well-equipped
- <10 minute walk to north-east corner of UC Berkeley campus
- 10 minute downhill walk to Gourmet Ghetto and Safeway
- Pest issues. Ants were widespread in the kitchen and present in bathroom. A mouse was seen on two occasions. Hopefully they can hire someone to resolve this.
- Noise from upstairs apartment (TV, music, voices) was certainly audible.
Thanks for your nice comments. Ants seem to have taken over every house in the east bay! But we just found out about the mice and have contracted with a pest control company. We don't want to live with them either!
Quiet comfortable place convenient to Cal. With great views! Would return.
The owners are taking very nice care of this 'basement' apartment that opens out to a patio with spectacular views of the bay. Great for walking to town and campus if you don't mind hills. There was a small hitch upon arrival delaying our checkin, which the owners handled quickly and with a great deal of class - I greatly appreciate their response! They seem like good people. I would definitely stay here again.
Perfect apartment in wonderful Berkeley location
This is a lovely place. We (2 adults) stayed for almost two weeks during a UC workshop. It's a 10-minute walk to campus and 10 minutes down (15 back up :)) to the gourmet ghetto with Peet's and Cheeseboard and other wonderful foods. The apartment is the base of a large house and the view is as seen in the advertisement, from both bedroom and living room. There are gardens beneath this view and the building in back is a historic school, not currently in use.
The apartment is about halfway up the hill and the entrance is down from the street around 30 steps. We parked our car on the street without problems. It is just a great location for walking around the beautiful, unique homes of Berkeley and their gardens- we spent many hours on long walks.
It is a very quiet location. There can be some sound from the upstairs apartment but it wasn't a problem for us. We always bring earplugs to sleep anyway, and had no problems on a work schedule. The kitchen has everything needed (basket coffeemaker, filters were there) and bathroom is just right with standard shower. The living area has a lovely bookcase and comfy reading nook along with couch, etc.
We saw the owners just a couple of times and they are friendly and interesting, and there is a sweet quiet dog on premises. We travel a lot, and would come back here in a heartbeat!
Awesome place. Had a fantastic stay.
Beautiful location, stellar views. Could spend entire day in terraced garden. Private entrance was great, but a long staircase.
Susan was a wonderful host. Only wish we had more time to spend with her.
Historic architectural neighborhood and home was fascinating. Walking tour is worth the time, but very hilly.

Charming garden getaway
Your hosts are very helpful, the view is delightful and you wake to the garden of Eden each morning. Please disregard anyone's written concerns about water temperature-- there's plenty of hot water for those who wait a minute or two. Do note: there are some steep stairs with a railing to reach the guest quarters, not a big problem but fair warning for those with heart issues, knee problems or, like me, a 50 pound suitcase!
lovely place, lovely people
I loved the place and will stay there again. Perfect views, walks, bed, kitchen, gardens, all of it!! The view of the city, bay and golden gate so lovely.
No worries about the walk up the hill from gourmet ghetto...enjoyed it!also nice walk to berkeley rose garden, great park and playground!
The hosts were friendly, responsive, and quiet.
Tolman Garden is located just a 15 minute walk from the University of California, Berkeley and the Gourmet Ghetto, home to the renowned Chez Panisse restaurant. It has magnificent views of the San Francisco Bay, the new Bay bridge and the Golden Gate bridge. The apartment opens onto beautiful garden. Although many people choose to drive, it is a 25 minute walk ( downhill) to the Downtown Berkeley BART station, which will take you directly into San Francisco, without the hassle of driving or parking.
