Great whale watching week
We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Kahana #617. The room was clean and we found ourselves not lacking a single convenience. The washer and dryer were a nice surprise. The Murphy bed was surprisingly comfortable and we watched whales from our deck. The room is set to capture the island breezes. It is so efficient that we had to put our case of bottled water by the bathroom door to keep it from slamming in the breeze. This is not a negative comment as we loved having the air flow and kept the shuttered bathroom windows and balcony open 24/7. The staff was very nice and we attended the first morning meeting which was very informative on the island activities. They even offered a ticket drawing and we were lucky enough to get a 2 for 1 activity. Chip at the activity desk was a wealth of knowledge and we used many of his helpful tips. We highly recommend Dollie's restaurant across the street. It is reasonably priced, menu full of good food, local atmosphere, and delicious daily specials. Maui Brewery is also in walking distance. All in all a great experience.
Great oceanview, great AC, but lots and lots of flaws
The good: This unit has a very nice oceanview from a good-sized balcony that's quite usable. It has some nice features, such as a fully functional AC plus an overhead fan. It's well stocked with kitchen stuff and towels. You can walk to the beach. The beach is a little rocky but other than that it's a nice, calm beach. It's close to some shopping, and within a 10 minute drive to Kaanaapali Beach. It has a nice sized fridge, a comfortable bath, and has had a relatively recent (though very incomplete) remodeling.
The bad: Right off the bat you can tell this building is very old and this unit should have gone further to remodel itself. The entrance door is the original door from decades ago and is falling apart. The lock is so loose every time you try to unlock it it looks like it could fall off. Its stopper doesn't stop the door because the door has been warped due to overuse and kind of "skips" over the stopper. The patio door is equally old and decrepit. In fact it won't fully close, leaving a slight gap which leads to a disturbing and very loud whooshing sound when the AC is on! You actually have to crack the patio door open more to shut the annoying sound up. Between that and the large opening under the entrance door the AC must work overtime to keep the unit cool because all the cold air is obviously slipping through the openings. The unit has a washer and dryer. Very handy. But the washer and dryer are so old, probably over 20 years old, that when it's running it looks and sounds like it is about to take a walk around the apartment. I knew the thumping noise it would make during the spin-dry cycle was just too loud for people downstairs to tolerate and so we only used it after breakfast when we were leaving the unit. The kitchen has too little counter space. We had to use the dining table for kitchen related activity. Furthermore, the furnishing in the room are very old and dated. The mirror in the bathroom is obviously the original one as the mercury is pitted. The mattress is just awful. It's very old and deformed due to overuse. Many fat people must have slept on it to make the valley-like depressions. I was just plain awful. My advice to the owner is: If you don't fix the doors, at least invest in better furnishings. I have seen better furnishings in 1.5 star hotels, seriously. Why would you neglect the room when it has such a fantastic view? Why not go that extra mile and complete the remodeling by fixing up the rest
This property conveys a true Hawaiian resort feel from the moment you enter the expansive oceanfront lobby to the alluring tiki torch gardens. Swim in the warm waters, watch the beauty of a Maui sunset, BBQ and entertain at the poolside cabana, play tennis at the lighted courts, exercise and sauna at the 'guests only' fitness center, or walk to many shops and restaurants in the vicinity.
