About the property

Three bedroom, two baths, on clean, crystal clear Lake James

Lake James

Lake James is a 7000 acre, pristine mountain lake, located in western North Carolina. Adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains and Linville Gorge, the lake offers sparkling clear water, boating, waterskiing, tubing, sailing, diving, camping, and fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, crappie, catfish, white bass and bream. A water quality study by the TVA showed the lake water to be the cleanest and purest of any lake they have ever tested. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in the Eastern US, and served as the location for the movies 'Last of the Mohicans' and 'Hunt for Red October.'

Our House

•A 1960s cottage, clean, comfortable, updated and refurbished, but not "upscale." Roughly 1200 square feet. Beach-like décor with comfortable furniture. Cable TV, DVD player, wireless internet. Maximum capacity is 6 people. We have onsite property managers, Lake James Real Estate in Morganton, NC, to be available 24-7 for any problems or issues.

•On a quiet cove in the Holiday Shores section of the lake, with a view of the main lake and South Mountains.

•3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room, economy kitchen, dining area, central heat and air, 2 screened porches. Queen bed in master bedroom, 2 twins in each other bedroom. Linens and towels for one week are included. Please note, we do NOT have a washer, dryer, or dishwasher. New flooring and updated bath fixtures in 2016.

•Gentle, grassy slope to the water. No rocks, steps, or steep banks to traverse. Lake bottom has a gradual slope and a sand bottom which makes nice swimming conditions for children.

•Huge, covered, private boat dock, with a large patio area, rocking chairs, swing, table, swim ladder, and covered boat slip for up to a 22’ boat. Bring your boat, skis, tubes, kayaks, canoes, and water toys! If you don't have a boat or jet ski, you can rent one 2 minutes away and have it delivered to our dock.

•Large parking area with plenty of room for boat trailers and RVs. There are three boat ramps within a five minute ride by boat and car.

Please note: Our home is in a residential neighborhood, and we do not rent to fraternities, house parties, school, or civic groups or other non-family groups. We do not allow occupancy by more than six people. We request no smoking or pets inside the house.

About Eileen

A family that loves the water!

Eileen purchased this house in 1998

Why Eileen chose Nebo

Making family memories is what we love most about Lake James. But, people come here for lots of different reasons--serenity, beauty, nature, friendly people, low crime, clean air and water, low cost of living......

What makes this house unique

Our lake is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire U.S. People from all over the country have chosen to vacation and retire here. In addition to its beauty and cleanliness, the lake is not very crowded and boat traffic is significantly lighter than on many large reservoirs--making it safer to be on the water, and quieter and more pleasant when on shore.

Wish I owned the place! Love to arrive, hate to leave....

My family loves this lake house! This is our second summer here. We spend the majority of our time on the dock, either reading, chatting, or jumping in the lake! We even hung our hammocks there and napped. : ) The house is clean and well-stocked, with lovely views too. I'm also a screen porch addict, and this home has 2-- double bonus. We bring our own boat, and the covered boatslip is perfect, and only a short boat ride away from the public lake access ramp. We'd stay forever... if only we could.

Great Lake access - home more suited for cramming as many people as you can vs quality of experienc.

House is not completely as advertised

For clarity-

Second bathroom is a tub with a hose attachment to rinse off and a suitable shower it is not.

The beds in the 3rd bedroom are crammed in and door cannot be opened up all the way as a result

The home described as “character” really means very old. With that comes some challenges. So be aware.

I will say the owner is super nice and accommodating and did the best she could. This place is probably best suited for a younger clientele who doesn’t mind college type accommodations.

Owner's Response: This traveler and his party of 2 adults and 4 children were guests in our home for 5 days. When it was time to check out, he presented the complaints he lists in this review and asked for a refund! We hope this review will be considered in that context. After he submitted his review, he changed his VRBO “profile,” so that this review and previous reviews that he might have submitted cannot be viewed. His traveler rating from other VRBO owners cannot be viewed either. Prior to changing his profile his traveler review was one star. We take our guests’ comfort and suggestions for improvements seriously and we strive to make each stay as pleasant and trouble free as possible. Each guest has our personal cell phone number, along with 24/7 contact information for our on-site property manager. Regarding the shower, the shower head is like any shower head, but it is attached to a flexible hose so that it can be removed from its wall mount above the tub, and used down inside the tub, as for use with a child or by a person with limited mobility. Several prior guests have thanked us for that feature. As for the bedroom, one of the twin beds got moved over a little by the cleaners, and just needed to be pushed back a few inches. As we cleaned up after his departure, we came across a printed itinerary for his stay. It read as follows: Day 1, fishing in the morning, boat lake exploring in the afternoon. Day 2, day hike at Linville Falls, lunch on the trail. Day 3, all day wakeboarding, tubing and fishing. Fish caught by the boys for dinner. Day 4, zip lining in the morning, lake in the afternoon. Day 5, enjoy the lake before departing. We think this guest and his party of 2 adults and 4 children had a great time at our home!

The lake side location of this property is very nice. We enjoyed the views, the ability to catch up on some reading on a large pleasant dock and the quiet neighborhood. The cottage was just the right size for our stay.

It was perfect!! Rent It! You Won't Be Sorry!

  • 5 of 5

My visit to this adorable house was with two other women - a girl’s getaway! It was perfect for the three of us since there were three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The furniture in the bedrooms was adorably painted, and I found out that the owner had actually made three of the tables in the house. They are on the entry porch, the front porch and the kitchen.

Speaking of the kitchen, it has a huge picture window that looks right out onto the lake. There are plenty of pots and pans, a full size refrigerator and a microwave. The living room has a comfortable sofa and chairs, plus fast wi-fi and a very good television with ample channel selection.

As others have mentioned, the lake is only steps away from the house. The lake itself is beautiful, and of course offers all of the vacation choices you’d want on a lake. You can boat (If you have your own boat), ski, fish from the dock, jet ski, and swim. We were there at the perfect time when it was not too hot or cold.

The back porch is serene and has comfortable rocking chairs and a ceiling fan. It’s a perfect place for seeing the activity on the lake or watching the children swim or fish. The dock has a swing and some great chairs and was a wonderful place to sit and read.

The owner is so easy to work with. The communication was great and she made it clear that if anything was wrong, she would make it right as soon as possible. But there was nothing wrong with this delightful place. Rent it! You won’t be sorry.

No surprises here, exactly as advertised. Spent a very quiet and peaceful week in October, even went swimming. Not sure how busy the lake is in the summer but I'm sure it is busy. House was great, boat dock perfect, porches wonderful everything you need for a wonderful vacation. Can't wait to return!
