Overview

About the property

Traditional Japanese architecture tucked away in a great Berkeley neighborhood.

Traditional Japanese architecture tucked away in a great Berkeley neighborhood. Peaceful and quiet but an easy walk to UC Berkeley, all the restaurants of the 'Gourmet Ghetto', and the North Berkeley Bart station. There is a great farmer’s market nearby on Thursday afternoons.

Traditional Japanese building with Tatami mats, organic queen size futon, and a 'Ofuro'- a deep and luxurious soaking tub (similar feel to a hot tub). Entering the tub requires agility as it is high and you have to stand on a bench, sit on the edge of the tub, and swing your legs around. If you have any questions about that please ask (and see pictures).

Lots of natural light with five skylights. Older wooden building with a country feel. The woven grass tatami mat floors have a noticeable smell of dry grass which we find to be lovely, but may not be for everyone. Comfortably sleeps 2.

Minimal kitchen with small fridge, tea kettle, small toaster oven, and dishes (other appliances may be available from our house by request). We use fragrance free and non-toxic cleaning materials and provide Dr. Bronners hand soap. There is a fan and an air purifier available for use.

10 minute walk to North Berkeley Bart Station. About 15 minutes to the downtown Berkeley Bart.

15-20 Minutes to the northwest corner of UC Berkeley campus

We are new to VRBO but are sure you will love our very special tea house.

Nice space with suboptimal bathroom

  • 3 of 5

The space is nice and well done, though not perfectly clean. The bathroom is suboptimal, besides the Japanese tub that is interesting to experience for a short time. The hair dryer was broken and, when I let the owner know, he did not offer to just buy a new one and replace, although I had 3 days to spend there....and it is a cheap item, at least based on the one they had.

Good North Berkeley location but minimally appointed

  • 3 of 5

The location was good and a short jaunt to Chez Panisse. It was also quiet being tucked away off the street but it was odd walking through what must have been the owners yard right next to their house. You had your own studio but it didn’t feel completely private. The design with the Japanese tea house motif is cool and we appreciate minimalist with no tv, etc. However, a closet would be nice or at least hooks to hang clothing. With a lack of that, an iron/ironing board would be helpful. The soaking tub sounded attractive but it ended up being a fungus lined tub I refused to use. What we didn’t realize was that the shower was a part of this deep tub and while my husband and I are fit and fairly athletic it requires acrobatics to get in and out and I feel is very unsafe in its current set up. There was no hand soap available that we could see but we had brought our own and the towels smelled musty and unclean. The frig was nice, but the sign noted wine, beer and sodas available and we found only a few items in there including someone’s partially drunk Gatorade. However, with the good location at least there is a Safeway close by. The wood stove was nice but only to look at since there was no wood available to actually use it and we were freezing when we got there.

A unique place!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed from August 13, 2017 to August 15 to drop of my son to UC Berkeley and it is only 10 minutes away. Zan is a very nice host! He showed us how to save money on street parking and if you live in Berkeley, parking is a project! this place is very close to Shattuck street which has many restaurants worth to try.

soothing stay

I was in Berkeley 3 nights. Each time I arrived home at this Zen retreat, I felt welcomed and soothed. It was a truly wonderful experience.

Could be better .

  • 3 of 5

I'm not impressed with HomeAway....No phone # to ask questions when an e-mail doesn't arrive in a timely manner...I think there are other sites that are clear on what the procedure is

... The board in front of the bed caused me to have a splinter in my foot.. ......

The hot water pot wasn't the easiest to use...no coffee pot....Maybe a Krug would solve the problem....

No closet space was a disappointment ....
