We had such a great time at this house! It had everything we needed for our families! Backyard was perfect and walking distance to the beach! If we had questions Kevin responded very quickly! We would definitely stay there again!
There was 8 of us that stayed at this house. 4 adults and 4 kids (ages 14, 10, 8 &7) The best part was the backyard. The kids loved the pool and the adults loved the hot tub and the fire pit. Very relaxing after busy days with lots of walking! Beyond that, the house was just okay. When we got there I attempted to contact the property manager because there were random messes left behind from the last renters and I’m pretty sure we all pay a cleaning fee. A couple wet towels on the washing machine, a few dirty utensils in the dishwasher, a used nail file on the hot tub, what looked like peanut butter on the counter top, muffin papers on the deck. It took a little for someone to get back to me but he did. And he did agree to give me my cleaning fee back. But you can’t help but think what else wasn’t cleaned if the obvious things aren’t cleaned. And I got the impression that once he refunded my cleaning fee, nothing more was needed to be done.
I think overall, this is an old house that’s a little dated. There were some complaints about the uncomfortable beds from 2 of us. Our biggest complaint for the master bedroom is that it doesn’t have a window above the air conditioner! Just blinds hanging down over a open window. So the street noise in the mornings made it tricky to sleep. We were up early because we were sleeping with an open window. Thank goodness for no bugs!! The washing machine wasn’t working well. Even with the smallest of loads it took 2-3 spin cycles to get the water out. All these things were mentioned to the property manager and Kevin so hopefully these will be acknowledged and taken care of for the next family coming in.
Reading reviews in the past I never understood why people didn’t just call and voice their complaints and have them fixed. But now I understand that after 2 or 3 texts/emails, it’s sometimes easier just to suck it up then to be constantly texting with little result.
So overall, the house was fine. Nothing so bad that it ruined our trip but compared to the house we stayed in after this one, this was a little old and needs some TLC.
Great outside area, marginal inside
Pros: The pool and playground areas were fantastic. Plenty of towels and dishes. The off-street parking was very helpful. Nice large master bedroom and closet. Cons: We were infested with ants in every room. There were maintenance issues and when these were reported, the problems were not addressed (master bedroom electrical outlets didn't work and need for toilet plunger). The lock box on front of the house was unlocked and there was no way to lock it. Back gate lock didn't work either - security issue, There were three broken chairs. There were wet sheets in the washer when we arrived. All outside garbage cans were already full when we arrived. The instruction book could be updated. There was an ironing board but no iron.
This is our letter to the owner of the property, Kevin Boyd outlining our complaints w/this house & a remedy to the problems we encountered.
When we arrived at your home on July 28 2018 at 4:00pm, our allotted arrival time, the house cleaner was still there attempting to clean. We say attempting because the house was anything but clean. We had to wash down the walls in the stairway as an example, It smelled like a wet dog. We found numerous issues with the house:
1. Deck covered with plywood which you attempted to repair but as you stated in your email, “I’m not a construction guy but I believe it to be safe” Well, that isn’t very reassuring to us & we most certainly couldn’t let our young children out there to play.
2. The air conditioning unit fell out of the bedroom window. How fortunate our children were not outside playing when this occurred. You also left drywall after your repair which we cleaned up.
3. The yard was overgrown with weeds which you did send out someone & the problem was fixed, but why did we have to point this out?
4 Master bed room had a filthy comforter, none of the electrical outlets work which was pointed out to you in a previous review back in March 2018 and the master bath divider is broken.
5 The living room a/c unit was not hooked up & upon further inspection we discovered the air filter was filthy which we cleaned.
6 Ants throughout the house, not only in the kitchen but in the downstairs bathroom and living room couch.
7 Mushrooms & mold growing under the deck which we felt unsafe to sit under after your “repair”
8 Pills and broken bottles & underwear found downstairs. Are you sure your house keeper is actually cleaning?
9 Downstairs bed had 1 pillow only and no pillowcases to put on the pillow shams which were thrown half hazzardly onto the bed.
10 Back gate doesn't lock securely
11 No propane for the firepit.
12 Pipe on step on side of the house makes those stairs unsafe
13 Microwave over the stove doesn’t work. It stopped in 2015, according to another reviewer & yes, you replaced it but why not fix it and free up the counter space the replacement takes?
14 Kitchen faucet is broken, spray button doesn’t work
15 Pool lights don’t work
16 smoke detector is missing batteries
17 Futon in downstairs bedroom is broken rendering it unuseable.
18 No response from your property manager
A discount was given which wasn't much, it certainly did not equate to the issues we dealt with.
The place had everything we needed. We just went as a single family, 2 adults and 2 kids, but it has enough room for multiple families. The backyard was nice with a play area for the kids. We have 2 boys, ages 4 and 5. The weather was high 60s-low 70s so we asked for the pool to be heated. We enjoyed the hot tub, pool and water slide. The place is several blocks to the beach, restaurants and coffee shops. We took a long walk to the beach and pier but there is also parking by the beach. The beach also has 2 playgrounds that the kids enjoyed. Kevin and the property manager were prompt in answering our questions.
Spring Break 2018
The property was well kept and in a great location! The front lawn and back yard area (horse shoe pit) could use some weeding/maintenance, but it didn't deter us from having a WONDERFUL time. We had 6 adults and 4 children and had room to spare. The pool/hot tub, fire pit and playground were amazing. We had one issue with the pool heat/hot tub not turning on, however we called Kevin and he was so nice and got back to us right away. The beds were comfortable and the downstairs living area was perfect for the kiddos in the evening. Overall I would definitely recommend this property to future San Diego travelers looking for a family friendly home to complete their vacation!
Quiet neighborhood walking distance to the beach. 10 minutes to LEGOLAND, 10 minutes to downtown Carlsbad and the outlet mall, 15 minutes to Oceanside Pier, 15 minutes to hiking trail, 35 minutes to Safari Park, 40 minutes to downtown San Diego and San Diego Zoo. 60 minutes to Disneyland.
