Quiet & private OCEANFRONT Retreat. 'It's like a Mini-Resort' is what so many visitors to the home say. Local Movie/TV Show Location Scouts call our home 'their favorite home in Hawaii'.
Now for the first time ever our private home will be offered to Travelers from around the world. This is undisputed island living at it's finest. This is the Ultimate Hawaiian Vacation Home, oceanfront, perched 65 feet above sea level, facing the sunsets behind Diamond Head. The elevation gives you the best perspective of the ocean. The location is the best weather on the island due to it's breezy and sunny locale. For those seeking a quiet, private and serene area, look no further.
Convenient to beaches & stores yet as far out into the ocean as possible and simply a stunning place to be vacationing. Along one side of the property is a large private tropical jungle ravine with banana, coconut, papaya trees with a country-like feel. Access to ocean is down a private meandering grass path to where there is a rarely visited cove with olivine sand next to it. Absorb the incredible views of mountains, deep blue and crystal clear ocean, sunsets behind Diamond Head, whales and dolphins frolicking with the rhythm of the ocean (in season).
This home also directly fronts a very rare blow hole (not THE well known Spitting Cave). On the ocean side of the home is a infinity swimming pool/spa with deep-ocean blue tile surrounded by cut lava stone pool deck. Next to it and elevated is a large BBQ lanai for outdoor entertaining. From there you can see the lawn, pool, mountains and ocean. You have ocean views from 3 dining areas; the outdoor BBQ lanai, dining area and the living room.
The Master Suite, private lanai and bath are direct ocean frontage. Every one of the 4 bedrooms has its own private bath. The large office is located next to the powder room.
Sleeps 8 in rooms. Nap, read or just soak in the sounds of waves, wind and birds on the oceanfront lanai on a Queen size Hawaiian daybed known as a pune'e. There is also a daybed in the office to relax and keep your loved ones company while they do their work.
Ocean activity opportunities abound such as scuba diving, boat rides, swimming and surfing. Golf, hiking, tennis, hiking and great walking around the neighborhood.
This property has been used in numerous TV shows, movies, national and international advertising. Obviously a special slice of paradise to be chosen & enjoyed.
The owners of this beautiful home were both raised in Hawaii. Rob is a native Hawaiian, and 6th generation descendant of Englishman Robert Holt, who sailed to Hawaii in 1820. At a young age, Rob was a surfboard shaper at Lightning Bolt and eventually founded the popular surf company, Local Motion. Rob currently is a top producing realtor at East Oahu Realty. Annie was born in Bermuda, but moved to Hawaii as a young child. She is an interior decorator, and prides herself in mixing Hawaiian-style in with various other compositions to create an eclectic Aloha blend. She may not have been born in Hawaii, but it is truly part of her being. Annie also partners with Rob in his real estate ventures. After raising their children, Rob and Annie decided to share their home with people from around the world so that others could experience a truly one of a kind island way of living. Rob and his beautiful wife, Annie, have been together for 43 years, and married for 34 years.
Rob Burns purchased this house in 2002
We chose this property and built this particular style home on the last 'never built on' lot in the Koko Kai area of Portlock because we love the area. We have lived in the area for years before purchasing it and waited for the perfect place to build our 'dream home'. The nuances of the area and lot location are key to the living conditions and home we desired. In Hawaii, there are many micro-climates in each area. To build the open-air Hawaiian style house we wanted, we had to build in this area because it is not too wet. Although both Rob and his wife were both raised in Kailua, they prefer the weather conditions on the leeward side of Koko Kai/Portlock. This property has favorable offshore winds that enhance an open air style of living, keeping it cool, dry and mildew free. 'It's very sunny here yet cooled by the trade-wind breezes'. The weather conditions can't be changed and structures can be altered to enhance the living experience. Also key to his wife wish is #1 'it has to be quiet' and that it is. The leeward side of the island has many advantages; we enjoy predominantly offshore trade-winds, incomparable sunsets, and is consistently sunnier than the windward or mountain areas of any island. Koko Kai/Portlock projects outward into the deep blue sea giving it additional climatic benefits like being away from the often cloudy Ko'olau mountains & traffic noise. We call our home 'Blue Hawaii Kai' because it is a part of the community of Hawaii Kai but is out in the deep blue sea in the prestigious area of Koko Kai.
The Hawaii Kai area has every amenity one would need, including all kinds of shopping (including Costco), medical services a mile away, restaurants (the original Roy's restaurant started here in Hawaii Kai), golf course, surfing and ocean activities. In fact, one could even stay here in Hawaii Kai and never go out to 'Honolulu' if they wanted to.
The home has unique design benefits that enhance the living weather than most locale. The design provides a seamless transition from outside to inside and vice versa. For this style of living a drier weather is preferable. Letting the trade-winds in and out is key to air flow. The breeze needs to be dry so the home was designed to allow the predominantly E/NE trade winds to blow gently through the entire home, thus needing no air conditioning. The weather is the best on the island, cool and dry in the shade and sunnier than most areas every day because it's located out into the deep blue sea and away from the major mountain chain. The interior courtyard is open to nature and this is totally unique by allowing balmy winds to flow throughout the entire home. The same winds directly permeate and cool the living area, kitchen, office and dining area. It's fascinating to see the rain falling right inside your house in the courtyard and no one gets wet! The open air courtyard has a zen-like fountain, sliding glass walls into the living room, leaving our home the most unique truly Hawaiian experience you will ever have.
This house is amazing. Want to relax? Such a variety of places inside and outside the house to do so! Want to throw a party? It's perfect for entertaining! The owner was super proactive and attentive and went above and beyond to give us the wonderful Hawaiian experience we were hoping for and it did not disappoint! We did so many fun things during our trip and yet the house was my favorite part! We cooked. We barbequed. If we bought food, we ordered take out because the ambiance of the house was better than any restaurant!
My family arrived March 25th and when we walked in the house and it took our breath away. The view and the house was just beautiful. It was far above our expectations. It was much nicer then the video and the video is beautiful. Rob and Annie are great hosts. They were able to give us great advise on what ever we needed. Could not be a better host. Our first morning from the patio we saw whales and dolphins in the morning while eating breakfast. Later that day down below the house along the cliffs we saws turtles. We jump off the cliff and watched locals jump off also. The cliffs down below are not crowded and easy to walk to in about three minutes. It is simply beautiful. Beaches are within a very short drive. Everything you would want or need to get can be reach in about 10 minutes. It has a quite location in a beautiful neighborhood with access to the whole island. If you want a vacation to remember this house will defiantly be a highlight of the vacation. We had no problem relaxing at the house and swimming in the pool and soaking in the hot tub. My 8 yr old granddaughter had a blast. There was seven of us and we had all the room we needed to just escape and relax in the house. The rooms are all beautiful and have a bathroom in each. We made trips throughout the island and looked forward to getting back to the house. We had a great barbecue down on the lower patio one night. Beautiful sunsets every night are seen. I cannot say enough about the house. It was one of the best decision made on the vacation that will be remembered.
Our family group consisted of 10 of us including grandparents, adult kids and spouses, and grandkids, two of whom were just over a year old.
While we had taken family vacations to Hawaii before, as well as to Mexico and Europe, our experience at Blue Hawaii Kai tops the list easily.
The house is not only an architectural classic but the layout could not be better for a large family. The house design takes advantage of the natural slope of the ravine running down to the ocean so that views of the bay and Diamond Head across the bay are available at each of the four very slightly descending levels of the house from the living room level to the pool/hot tub/sun patio area.
The kitchen is large and has all sorts of equipment. The master bedroom is huge with its own lanai and great view of the ocean. The three other bedrooms are also very nice. The office worked fine for us as a 5th bedroom.
The pool and deck area were wonderful. Imagine floating in the pool or sitting in the hot tub looking out across the bay as the sun disappears behind Diamond Head, or watching the para-sailors gliding above the bay. By the way, because we had some young kids we were relieved to have the sturdy gated fence installed to separate the pool area from the rest of the house.
Having a rental car is a necessity. Shopping is a 10-minute drive away. Beaches of various kinds are also within a 10-20 minute drive. Waikiki with all of its tourist attractions is about 25 minutes away. (If you go there expect heavy congestion.)
But the major attraction is the fantastic house with its perfect layout for a family group, its location out on a tip of the island and, of course, its amazing view.
Rob, the owner, is a great guy and as helpful as he can be. He arranged for three friends, Poki'i, Leonard and Caroline, to come to the house one evening and entertain us all with Hawaiian music and song. Caroline provided a spontaneous hula lesson, which turned out to be fun for everyone, and an especially big hit with our two 1-year old grandkids.
Thanks Rob for letting us share your home. My family agree it was the best vacation ever.
My family and I visited Honolulu for the first time and this was a trip of a life time! I never write reviews, but I felt taking the time to write this review was necessary! The experience we had was far beyond our expectations. I agree with previous reviews that the pictures don't do this home justice. When you first walk in the home, the view of the ocean is breathtaking. The home can be compared to an open air 5 star resort to say the least, but Robs hospitality exceeds any resort I've ever stayed at! The home couldn't be in a more perfect place to have access to anyones needs. Our ages ranged from 7 months to 72. For those of us who enjoyed the house, we could watch the whales, dolphins, and even saw a monk seal which is an endangered species. The hammock, pool, and hot tub got plenty of use because the relaxing atmosphere of your own personal paradise is everywhere. We also enjoyed grilling on the outdoor patio one night for dinner. If you are more adventurous there is an endless amount of things to do within a few miles. We did rent a car for easy access to the North shore and attractions like Pearl Harbor. ALL of Robs recommendations for restaurants could not have been better. We can't wait for our next trip to Rob and Annie's paradise!! Thank you for being the best host and hostess and sharing your home.
All our love, The Rabels
We are a large family from Australia with five kids, who range from five years to twenty-five years of age, and stayed at Blue Hawaii Kai with a friend from Switzerland.
The location of the property is second to none. Its close proximity to Honolulu provides ample opportunity to visit Waikiki beach, any of the exciting restaurants, shows, attractions, Pearl Harbor and the many shopping options, including the upmarket mall. We did most of our grocery shopping just down the road at Costco’s.
We would strongly recommend renting a car at the airport, as it gave us access to the entire island. It meant that we could explore all the nearby beaches and walkways with ease. There is snorkeling, turtle watching, swimming, surfing or just plain sun bathing. Rob was so kind to accompany us for a whole day of Oahu exploring, just driving the island with us and introducing the family to all the exciting spots and lots of stories. Not to forget the awesome Hamburger joint. As Rob grew up on the island his insight proved invaluable.
Coming back to the property was always the most exciting part of the day though. There was a paradise waiting for us, with papayas and coconuts right on the property. Our Swiss friend spent many hours lazing in the hammock, gazing at the passing dolphins, waves and watching the surfers.
One evening, when we were all watching Hawaii 5-O, the home featured in the opening scene and throughout the movie. The kids were all mesmerized and felt quite special to be staying in such a famous place.
All in all, we had a wonderful stay. The very best feature of this stunning property has to be its indoor/outdoor flow. It makes for great tropical living and entertaining in the evenings. All of us look back on our holiday and will never forget the magical sunset we enjoyed every single evening from the edge of the infinity pool!
Thank you for letting us share your dream.
Aloha to Rob, Annie, Poki’i and Kula.
Mahalo, Tayler family and Beatrice
There are 6 adults and 4 children with age 9, 4, 3, and 2 in our group. Everyone of us enjoyed this house very much.
The ocean view is really breathtaking. We enjoyed the view from sunrise to sunset. Children absolutely loved the infinity-styled swimming pool. Its much larger and nicer than the picture shows. I took my kids to the pool to enjoy sunshine and the amazing view at least twice a day. The hot-water Jacuzzi next to the pool is very lovely as well.
The kitchen is fully equipped with juice mixer, dishwasher, rice cooker, oven, and all sorts of spices. We were able to cook in both Chinese style and western style with relative ease.
All 4 bedrooms are all nice and cozy with its own bathrooms.
There is an Apple TV in the living room. So we were able to airplay our own movies for the Children.
Its conveniently located in a quiet upscale neighborhood. A few local shopping malls, including Costco, Safeway, Jack in the Box, and other stores are within 10 minute drive.
Most important of all, the owner, Rob, is very nice and gracious. It was really easy and comfortable to communicate with him before and during our stay.
If I must complain something, it would be the air conditioning. The weather was unusually warm without much wind that week. Air-conditioner is only available in the master bedroom. We had to ask Rob to provide cooling fans for the other 3 bedrooms. But it was still a bit too warm for a comfortable sleep.
All-in-all, this house beat our expectation. The pictures shown on VRBO really doesn't do justice. It is much nicer and more beautiful than the pictures show. I would absolutely recommend this house to our friends.
We have the local knowledge of the islands and would love to share it with you. There is hiking, surfing, golfing, tennis, snorkeling, fishing, rifle range, kite flying, whale watching (in season), beach strolls, body surfing, swimming, SUPing, dolphin & 'Spitting Cave' & 'China Walls' watching are activities available in our area. We will also provide you with optional things to do beyond the immediate area & service providers for your decision of whom to use in other areas as well.
