This 2200 sq. ft., 4 bedroom, ocean-side house is ideal for for a family or small group of 6 or 7 (to 8 maximum!) people. Your home away from home on Salt Spring Island, the house is surrounded by gardens and natural beauty, yet is only 2 km (by car, walking, bicycling or bus) from Ganges village. Hiking trails and boating (at high tide - kayak or canoe supplied) are right out the front door, and abundant wildlife, including a nearby eagle’s nest, is part of the daily life.
The house was built in 1989 and has been carefully maintained, including a new metal roof in 2011. The house faces due south toward the Canal, and gets full sunlight throughout the day.
The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, separate living room, sun room and TV room. The house interior centers around the open kitchen-dining-sitting area, with ample smaller spaces around that can provide opportunities for reading, play, entertainment, conversation, etc. away from the 'thick of things'. The hardwood floors, bright sunny interior, and blend of antique and more modern furniture provide a very comforting and comfortable ambience.
Outdoor decks on the front side (with swinging couch) and sunny side (with sun chairs and picnic table) encourage enjoyment of the beautiful bayside setting, although there are also tempting sitting areas on the side and front lawns as well as on a landing at the edge of the bay.
This oceanside property is a great place for watching and enjoying nature as the tides come in and out twice each day, exposing mud about half of each 24 hour day. Kayaking and canoeing are possible at higher tide levels, and the tide brings in the warmest water on the island for swimming in the shallow bay. The canal is home to geese, ducks, kingfishers, river otters, and a nesting pair of bald eagles.
The families, small groups, and couples who have stayed here have consistently commented on the relaxing time they have had while staying at Bayside Retreat.
Our large pond attracts birds and wildlife, including the species-at-risk red-legged frog.
