Overview

About the property

May News Flash –July 24-31, 2017 is now open. Due to a late cancellation this week-long spot is now open. A rental of 5-7 days is possile in that week..

This 2200 sq. ft., 4 bedroom, ocean-side house is ideal for for a family or small group of 6 or 7 (to 8 maximum!) people. Your home away from home on Salt Spring Island, the house is surrounded by gardens and natural beauty, yet is only 2 km (by car, walking, bicycling or bus) from Ganges village. Hiking trails and boating (at high tide - kayak or canoe supplied) are right out the front door, and abundant wildlife, including a nearby eagle’s nest, is part of the daily life.

The house was built in 1989 and has been carefully maintained, including a new metal roof in 2011. The house faces due south toward the Canal, and gets full sunlight throughout the day.

The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, separate living room, sun room and TV room. The house interior centers around the open kitchen-dining-sitting area, with ample smaller spaces around that can provide opportunities for reading, play, entertainment, conversation, etc. away from the 'thick of things'. The hardwood floors, bright sunny interior, and blend of antique and more modern furniture provide a very comforting and comfortable ambience.

Outdoor decks on the front side (with swinging couch) and sunny side (with sun chairs and picnic table) encourage enjoyment of the beautiful bayside setting, although there are also tempting sitting areas on the side and front lawns as well as on a landing at the edge of the bay.

This oceanside property is a great place for watching and enjoying nature as the tides come in and out twice each day, exposing mud about half of each 24 hour day. Kayaking and canoeing are possible at higher tide levels, and the tide brings in the warmest water on the island for swimming in the shallow bay. The canal is home to geese, ducks, kingfishers, river otters, and a nesting pair of bald eagles.

The families, small groups, and couples who have stayed here have consistently commented on the relaxing time they have had while staying at Bayside Retreat.

Our large pond attracts birds and wildlife, including the species-at-risk red-legged frog.

Hosts David and Deborah are retired science educators who enjoy a rewarding nature-oriented island life. They are active in several local organizations including the Garden Club, Trail and Nature Club, Community Energy Group, and the local land conservancy. They enjoy kayaking and canoeing right from the house at higher tides, walking local trails, and hiking on nearby Mt. Erskine. Gardening and nature-watching on the property are high priorities. Their hobbies, nature photography and art, can be viewed around the house, providing a personal flavor of their interests.

Their approach to the house is to be available to answer any questions, but to leave you to all the privacy you would like as guests.

Why David Denning & Deborah Miller chose British Columbia

Deborah and David chose this location because of its sunny, serene, nature-focused setting. The gardens and native vegetation around the property have been developed to encourage both natural wildlife such as birds, butterflies and pond life, as well as provide privacy screening.

What makes this house unique

The benefits of our home are abundant. The quiet peaceful setting and the privacy one feels here are outstanding. The house is family-friendly and very relaxing.

For nature lovers and naturalists, our home is a treat - from the large pond central on the property with its red-legged frogs, to the Canal waterfront where we can watch eagles nesting.

Lovely family home near the water

  • 5 of 5

My family has vacationed at David and Deborah's lovely, warm and very well equipped house for 1 week for each of the past 2 summers. They are very welcoming hosts, and the house is comfortable, with a fabulous location. The inlet brings water up to the dock at high tide (they are well equipped with a canoe and kayak) and at low tide our kids loved playing in mud.

It's a 5 minute drive to town, or a nice bike ride.

We will be back again.

Wonderful Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 12 lovely days at this island retreat with our adult children and grandchild. The hosts were most accommodating and informative. The house was warm and cozy with its beautiful antiques and artwork and had lots of room for our family to spread out. The beds were all comfortable! Our grandson enjoyed the large stash of toys. We enjoyed the privacy, beautiful gardens, birds and canoeing the canal, as well as, the quiet beaches on the island. The town of Ganges is just big enough to have everything you need and small enough to be friendly. The market was wonderful.

Lovely place for a peaceful holiday

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this delightful house by the water. It was so nice to arrive after a long journey and have delicious bread, butter, milk and eggs waiting for us. The house has everything one could need and the kitchen is well-supplied for anybody who likes to cook and back. One of my favourite things was the amount of good places for napping both inside and outside including two swing seats and a hammock. There are also many good places to enjoy a coffee outside. And it is near good hiking trails. There were four of us (my mom, brother and 8-year old nephew and there was lots of room for us to hang out together and on our own. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. We are planning to return next summer.

wonderful house and location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the house in late August when the weather was beautiful. The house is very spacious with lots of areas to sit both inside and outside. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the bathrooms were very good. The kitchen had everything we needed, and had great windows overlooking the water. The food that Deborah and David provided when we arrived was great and saved us a shopping trip right away. The inlet was very good for kayaking and canoeing and the water the most clear I have ever seen. David and Deborah were very helpful but not intrusive. It was a good walk into town but a quick drive. We enjoyed the peaceful property very much and had a wonderful visit to the island. There are lots of great parks to hike around in and beautiful scenery everywhere.

Fun family week end

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday with our two sons and their families. We had lots of room for kids and grandkids. The house is lovely. There was a high chair and even toys for the wee ones. The boys went canoeing a few times It was so peaceful in the bay. Outside there is seating by the water it was great to sit there with a cup of coffee Also seating on a swing in the shade( I liked that place) and a lovely swing on the porch. There is a great market to go to in town also many restaurants and coffee chops just a few minutes drive away. In all we had a great time and would highly recommend this lovely home

Excellent family vacation get-away

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week at this wonderful rental place -- a mini reunion with our 2 sons and their girlfriends. Very spacious house with many great sitting areas, both inside and outside--great spaces for group activities or time on your own. Very well-equipped kitchen. Thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor setting, especially hearing all the birds and watching the bald eagles and their babies (now teenagers) in the trees across the canal, with close-up views through the telescope provided by the owners. The canoe was an excellent way to explore the canal and the ocean shores. The owners gave excellent recommendations on things to do, ways to access the best beaches and local activities. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!
