About Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander

Albert and Sha Sha love to be near the ocean, and can Albert loves to be handy and fix things in the cottage and Sha Sha Higby makes elaborate costume sculptures and performs in them as pictured here. She has performed all over he world.Sha Sha used to come to Bolinas with her family when she was a child and the house looks likes the dollhouses she made. Albert handcrafted much of the house himself and works in the Bolinas Peoples Natural Food store.

Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander chose San Francisco Bay Area

We both love this town as it is rural,we can walk to the ocean every afternoon and yet be in the city in an hour to have whatever culture we need. Albert lived in this house for years before we bought it. It used to be a garage during the turn of he century and was gradually enlarged over the years.

What makes this cottage unique

Cozy evenings. We spent a long time making the house an artistic experience filling it with the textiles we collected during our travels when I was performing. Sha Sha had a Fulbright in India for research in textiles when she and Albert were married. At night I love to take walks to the beach and a loop around the town. It is all very close.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Sha Sha -what a wonderful few days I have had here so far away from the noise of Palo Alto and Stanford University. Thank you for creating this sanctuary,so peaceful and save. I found the spirit much alive in the monarch butterflies that wer just passing through. Thank you for all the care you took in creating this sacred space.

charming cottage minutes from the beach and downtown.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this Bolinas cottage. The cottage is full of charm and the kitchen is well stocked. The cottage is an easy walk to the beach - great location to check out the waves and an easy walk with your surfboard. The hosts were incredibly responsive and easy to communicate with!

lovely super sweet cottage

  • 5 of 5

couldn't ask for a more quintessential Bolinas cottage. very sweet, loved being able to build a fire in the fireplace, soak in the claw foot tub, and cook on the sweet old stove. nice attentive owners. beautifully decorated, well loved house with fun little surprises. great location right near "town". DO beware that the top level requires a bit of an adventurous soul. you will be rewarded with a LOVELY sleeping nook and beautiful porch room, but just know the staircase would be challenging for anyone who felt unsteady on their feet, or for little kids. Mine were fine as they are older, and we all loved the home. Thank you Sha Sha for a delightful stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I really appreciate it. People can always take the outside stairs that we built outside the bathroom. We couldnt change the stairs they are really just access to the lofts and the upstairs is supposed to be accessible via the other stairs. But for short people you can use both.

Small, convenient and artsy

  • 3 of 5

Just-a-minute cottage is conveniently located a few blocks from the main beach access in Bolinas and from downtown. It's an easy and pleasant walk and I was spared from needing to drive for our entire 5 day stay. That was a treat!

The cottage is quite small and totally filled with varied art and many many collectables. The bed downstairs in a small cozy cave-like room with a comfy midsized bed. Upstairs, there is a loft open to the downstairs. The bed upstairs is a futon for those who like firm surfaces. There is an additional mattress pad that's available to help make the bed softer, but we never found it. The pillows were varied and all quite comfortable, remarkably so!. There's several different levels to the house with landings and lofts and decks. One must be comfortable going up and down stairs to make full use of the space. The stairway between the main living area and the upstairs loft is more ladder-like and we ended up using the outdoors staircase to go in and out of the upstairs loft with ease. There are helpful "self-serve" info signs all over the house that explain how to use the various items.

The cast iron tub was lovely, the ferns in the bathroom were lovely, the greenhouse like bathroom was fun and quirky but not for those who require a sense of full privacy... as it's viewable to the outside folks who might walk by in your household. The washer dryer were super convenient. The kitchen is very small and stocked adequately. The breaker blew easily when we had too much going on in the kitchen, so plan ahead! :) The property is mostly fenced and worked well for our dogs who needed some containment. There is a way they could have gotten out if they were boundary challenging breeds. They were happy to stay near us and it worked well.

Sha Sha, the owner was traveling for part of our planning time and the first part of our stay. Our communications had significant delays that were inconvenient but understandable given the radical time zone difference. It was frustrating and I wish we'd been told of the reason for the delays ahead of time. (I understand based on the VRBO that the typical turn around response time was 2 hours and this was far from the case.) We went a day plus without being able to use the internet. This was frustrating and limiting and yet it forced us to unplug more than we would have otherwise. Albert dropped by early on in our stay and made sure we were comfy and had what we needed. He was kind sweet and helpful.

Owner's Response: Thank you Thank you for taking the time writing such a detailed review. Very informative for people. The hospitality link at Homeaway/VRBO does not seem to get to everyone an sometimes requires password and verification code to answer. You also did not respond to my communication because of this perhaps. If a matter is urgent call us,text us,email is slower. WE have added a big sign to the house to be sure to call or text us for problems like internet. I have included instructions for resetting it by unplugging and plugging in again..which is all that is usually needed. Do not rely on email only for communication solely though I do respond rapidly. We rarely leave the country. My husband had met you and works around the corner and gave you his number so would have speedily responded to to a call or text. We do live in town so it is convenient if someone has a problem because many owners live out of town.
