About Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander
Albert and Sha Sha love to be near the ocean, and can Albert loves to be handy and fix things in the cottage and Sha Sha Higby makes elaborate costume sculptures and performs in them as pictured here. She has performed all over he world.Sha Sha used to come to Bolinas with her family when she was a child and the house looks likes the dollhouses she made. Albert handcrafted much of the house himself and works in the Bolinas Peoples Natural Food store.
Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander purchased this Cottage in 1986
Why Sha Sha Higby,Albert Hollander chose Bolinas
We both love this town as it is rural,we can walk to the ocean every afternoon and yet be in the city in an hour to have whatever culture we need. Albert lived in this house for years before we bought it. It used to be a garage during the turn of he century and was gradually enlarged over the years.
What makes this Cottage unique
Cozy evenings. We spent a long time making the house an artistic experience filling it with the textiles we collected during our travels when I was performing. Sha Sha had a Fulbright in India for research in textiles when she and Albert were married. At night I love to take walks to the beach and a loop around the town. It is all very close.

I felt like Goldilocks the instant we walked in; the cottage was cozy and warm and just the right size for our small family of four. Although both our adult son and daughter could have stayed upstairs at the same time, as it worked out , our daughter Maggie stayed one night and our son the next. Maggie loved the vibe of the cottage and enjoyed walking up the twisty stairs to her private space upstairs. We had a fire in the wood stove, cooked a stew that Maggie had started at home in her crockpot and enjoyed our meal around the table for four.
When we went out for a walk and came back after dark we were greeted at the back gate by the lights automatically coming on for us, what a particularly thoughtful touch. It felt magical as we walked into the house and more lights came on. Getting up at night to use the bathroom was so easy when the lights came on to light the way.
I enjoyed a nice long soak in the claw foot tub, it was just the right size. My husband had a nice shower in the morning with plenty of hot water. We sleep well in the comfortable bed and made coffee in the morning with the French Press, a perfect start to the day. We had everything we needed day and night.
We especially appreciated being so close to everything in town. I walked to town several times in one day, as it took no more than five minutes. We also enjoyed walking to the the Mesa and the beach, again we were just minutes away.
We had a perfect weekend and look forward to another visit soon.
Thank you so so much for take the time out to write your experiences. I appreciate it when people like the house . The weekend passed by so quickly and I enjoyed meeting you folks a lot . Cool house with many interesting things to look at. Comfortable bed! Woodstove kept us warm. Stairs fine for us but outside stairs may be better for some. Overall, really cool spot!
Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay. Yes we have a quirkey house but ope it is cozy still
Beautiful atmosphere on the cottage
It's worth staying here. You'le feel like at home
Fun and perfect place to stay
My two friends and I stayed here for a girls' weekend. The place was a treasure trove of unique items and funky design, with the necessary modern amenities to ensure comfort. We had no complaints but for difficulty in finding plugs for our chargers. The kitchen was well-stocked, the towels, soft, the beds comfy. Love, love, love......
Great getaway.Original, artistic.
Wonderful town, great house.Very clean, private, artistic, close to everything.Recommended.
lovely super sweet cottage
couldn't ask for a more quintessential Bolinas cottage. very sweet, loved being able to build a fire in the fireplace, soak in the claw foot tub, and cook on the sweet old stove. nice attentive owners. beautifully decorated, well loved house with fun little surprises. great location right near "town". DO beware that the top level requires a bit of an adventurous soul. you will be rewarded with a LOVELY sleeping nook and beautiful porch room, but just know the staircase would be challenging for anyone who felt unsteady on their feet, or for little kids. Mine were fine as they are older, and we all loved the home. Thank you Sha Sha for a delightful stay.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I really appreciate it. People can always take the outside stairs that we built outside the bathroom. We couldnt change the stairs they are really just access to the lofts and the upstairs is supposed to be accessible via the other stairs. But for short people you can use both.
