About Nancy Kuhn

My Uncle bought this place in 2002. He is 82 years old. He is a long time rancher & private pilot.

Nancy Kuhn purchased this house in 2016

Why Nancy Kuhn chose Pahoa

My uncle loves Hawaii. But this way he can live with his daughter. We can block time as to have Family time in Aloha Land. We plan to come back

What makes this house unique

When you walk in it's breathtaking to see the big blue from the second floor. Wide open beamed wood ceilings. Windows everywhere. Just sit with your coffee and see the whales frolic. You can sit at the furthest point at the ocean by the pool and watch baby sea turtles frolic in the rollers. You have to drive 10 min south of house and swim your heart's content at the Kapoho tide pools. Global reviews about this place. It's acres of tide pools and safe from the breakers. Float about 10 ft above rainbow coral and plentiful bright colored marine fish. Need a snorkel and reef shoes. Open areas like caves with coral shaped like gigantic flowers in the ocean. The southeast of the island is less rain as well. Black sands beach, warm to cold geothermal lagoon, Jagger Museum at Volcanoes Nat'l Park to view lava lake depending on lake levels. No light pollution see the stars. Shopping in Hilo also has a great farmers market with international shopping. I find the same products here 1/3 less than the other islands. We have the trade winds so we don't have mosquitos and it keeps the air flow cooler. Listen to the waves put you to sleep all night.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This upgrade makes the house an excellent natural way to have the cool ocean trade winds for you to control the temperature. The older small windows worked for 25 yrs with Grandpa unfortunately we need to remind guests that when they go to the volcano or swimming to please close all windows and slider doors as the rain gets in and damages the hardware to not close. The downstairs has 6 ft sliders and Yeah our new 6ft sliders came in by boat for the upstairs and the tradewinds can roar through the house so you can control the temperature upstairs as well. Thank you for listening and may you enjoy your stay. Its definitely cool.

The upper level can be reached by four steps in the front yard. The lower level can be reached by sliders in the backyard. A car can be driven to the end of the driveway which is the entrance to the backyard. The inside stairs are about 2 inches narrower and 1 inch taller than some stairs. The surface of the stairs is a rough pebble tech surface. Caution signs are posted. We are on a bluff with a 3 foot stone fence separating us from jagged rocks and the ocean 30 feet below. The unfenced pool is small and naturally only warmed by the sun. Children need to be supervised at all times.

Lovely, relaxing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My two adult children and I spent almost a week in Nancy's place enjoying the sound of the surf and exploring the island. Home is well appointed and an ideal spot to get away from it all. While WIFI and cable were available to those who want to stay in touch, falling asleep in the yard's hammock or lounge chairs was more our style!

Beautiful home, beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

The house was great for our family reunion. It had plenty of space to accommodate 7 people, including three kids. The views were breathtaking, and the house was well equipped with beach adventure supplies (such as flippers, water shoes, towels, sunscreen, etc.). It was amazing to be so close to the ocean, and we the neighborhood was quiet and welcoming. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Great time!

  • 4 of 5

Thanks for a great time at your beautiful home! My grandson loved the pool and hammock outside, and we enjoyed watching the numerous turtles. The beds were nice and comfy and the living area is spacious. The only recommendation I'd make is to add more fans as there was only the living room ceiling fan and one vertical fan to cool off the areas. There was another standing older fan, but that didn't seem to work very well. Other than that, 2 thumbs up and thank you very much!

Owner's Response: The older standing fan was replaced with a new vertical fan. We have replaced most of the windows that had screens to improve ventilation. By the way, the exterior white paint has been repainted a light green. Thank you for your suggestion. Glad that you had a great time!

Beautiful peaceful retreat.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a two week story in this beautiful home. We were prepared to be disappointed when we arrived. Much to our pleasure we weren't disappointed. This is a lovely home; spacious, in a quiet neighborhood, every thing you can think of supplied. Soap, shampoo, paper towels, hairdryer, washer and dryer, beach towels, sunscreen, beach mats, snorkel equipment, kitchen dishes and utensils, zip lock bags, hammock, pool toys, fans, cable tv and internet. In addition there were flower arraignments in every room and a fresh pineapple and avocado were waiting for us. A large pitcher of fresh water was in the refrigerator, too. The pool isn't the biggest, but it is plenty big to cool off in and watch the turtles feeding below.

The house sleeps 8 easily, but it was just my husband and I on our trip. There is no air conditioning and in spite of being ocean front, the house gets hot. We placed two fans on our bed and left the sliding glass door open in our bedroom. We started off with no covers and by morning we had our sheets and bedspread on.

Dennis is the local contact person, and he was a big help in pointing us to good spots to visit. He comes to clean the pool every couple of days and we looked forward to talking with him and learning about the island.

We will gladly book this home again. It was a perfect island paradise for my husband and I

Amazing location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed with friends and the house was perfect for our needs. The views were amazing and the grounds were made for relaxing. We spent many an hour sitting in the pool watching the turtles below us. The house is showing its age and needs a bit of TLC, but that is a work in progress. The house was quite hot at night, we were unable to open a lot of the windows, and had to rely on fans. The stairs had a pebblecrete coating and were quite narrow, so you had to take extra care using them. That being said the postives far outweighed the negatives.

Owner's Response: We have continued to replace windows to improve air circulation. I think several were done in mid June. I believe we are only waiting for the delivery of the final replacement window. We were glad that you and your friends enjoyed your visit! It is an amazing location.

Hawaii living is very different so we ask that you close your windows when you leave as it can rain for even a few minutes each day. We also have very special Hawaiian windows with crank casings that have a lever to unlock first before opening. Grandpa says please make sure you have teenagers dry off before coming in house as tile can be slippery if wet. We have a flight of stairs that is steep but well lighted and ask that you proceed slowiy. Our pool is 3/4 size about 4 ft deep. We have some float rafts, some snorkels. BRING AQUA SHOES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for tide pools. There is a Longs in Pahoa. PLEASE NOTE RATES ARE BASED ON 2 GUESTS.
