About the property

Walk Into Oceanfront Living In Paradise.. Pool artist reef design at ocean

ALoha... Oceanfront Pool. Sleeps 8 plus two futons. Includes 3 bedrm + BONUS ROOM.enclosed lanai has double bed. 2 story house open beam ceilings. Lots of island style furniture. Tile floors. Have coffee on the top floor with oceanviews forever. privacy, next to pool has a perch/sitting point to sit & meditate or do yoga overlooking the ocean, short ocean front trail to Kahakai park. Kapoho Tide Pools full of bright colored fish, float 10 ft above rainbow color coral that look like gigantic flowers in the ocean, or continue down to geothermal warm lagoon to swim in the size of a football field area, or drive farther towards Kalapana to Black Sands Beach. A short drive of 10 min to tide pools from house. The residents have a local NIGHT farmer's market called Uncle Roberts, International food and Firedancing. Another adventure is to go north of Hilo to the Tropical Botanical Garden with a nice 1 hr walk through the Exotic that comes out at the ocean. Keaau has an open village market for farm papaya/ bananas/ & little Mom & Pop open restaurant for Thai & Philippine food. Plantain banana. Chicken adobo food great, see a lot of locals eating here & it's more than affordable. It's a one stop shop. We have the best water on the island from 400 ft artisan well, not catchment. We are upgrading five more windows. Also the 2nd bedroom now has two twins and have moved the double bed out to the enclosed porch (lanai). Take an evening stroll you walk a block inland and you can hear the jungle birds celebrating . Tis a beautiful ambiance. Just saw that if you drive to Jagger Museum in the Volcanic Nat'l Park the lava alke is active; however, check the lava lake levels. If, it is to low, then you only see steam. I saw the lava lake when it was about 30-40 meters below. If lava viewable, then see it in daylight and return for twilight and evening viewing. Bring telephoto camera and binoculars. Telescope buffs. There is no light pollution here. Enjoy the cosmos. May the dove of peace always be by your side. Mahalo

About Nancy Kuhn

My Uncle bought this in 2002. He is 80 yrs old & is helping his grandson start a sustainable farm in northern California. He is a long time rancher & private pilot. He does live at his Hawaii residence through out the year.

Nancy Kuhn purchased this house in 2002

Why Nancy Kuhn chose Puna District

My uncle loves Hawaii. But this way he can live with his daughter while the vacation rental helps keep the maintenance going as he is under going surgery. We can block time as to have Family time in Aloha Land. We plan to come back

What makes this house unique

When you walk in its breathtaking to see the big blue from the second floor. Wide openbeamed wood ceilings.Windows everywhere. Just sit with your coffee & see the whales frolic. You can sit at the furthest point at the ocean by the pool and watch baby sea turtles frolic in the rollers. You have to drive 10 min south of house and swim your hearts content at the Kapoho tide pools. Global reviews about this place. Its acres of tide pools and safe from the breakers. Float about 10 ft above rainbow coral and plentiful bright colored marine fish. Need a snorkel and reef shoes. Open areas like caves with coral shaped like gigantic flowers in the ocean. The southeast of the island is less rain as well. Black sands beach, warm to cold geothermal lagoon, Jagger Museum at Volcanoes Nat'l Park to view lava lake depending on lake levels. No light pollution see the stars. Shopping in Hilo also has a great farmers market with international shopping. I find the same products here 1/3 less than the other islands. We have the trade winds so we don't have mosquitos and it keeps the air flow cooler. Listen to the waves put you to sleep all night.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This upgrade makes the house an excellent natural way to have the cool ocean trade winds for you to control the temperature. The older small windows worked for 25 yrs with Grandpa unfortunately we need to remind guests that when they go to the volcano or swimming to please close all windows and slider doors as the rain gets in and damages the hardware to not close. The downstairs has 6 ft sliders and Yeah our new 6ft sliders came in by boat for the upstairs and the tradewinds can roar through the house so you can control the temperature upstairs as well. Thank you for listening and may you enjoy your stay. Its definitely cool.

Notes:
The upper level can be reached by four steps in the front yard. The lower level can be reached by sliders in the backyard. A car can be driven to the end of the driveway which is the entrance to the backyard. The inside stairs are about 2 inches narrower and 1 inch taller than some stairs. The surface of the stairs is a rough pebble tech surface. Caution signs are posted. We are on a bluff with a 3 foot stone fence separating us from jagged rocks and the ocean 30 feet below. The unfenced pool is small and naturally only warmed by the sun. Children need to be supervised at all times.

Spacious and amazing views

  • 3 of 5

We had a wonderful time, loved the area. The house is very spacious but as previous reviews, it needs updating, possibly new beds.

Owner's Response: Glad that you enjoyed our location with the great views. We appreciate your feedback. We started some projects. Both the television and internet dishes were replaced at the end of March. We ordered five new windows. After the windows arrive and are installed, then we will do some painting upstairs and paint the exterior of the house. The pool will be plastered at the end of April. It is an ongoing effort to maintain an oceanfront home.

Fantastic view and grassy back yard

  • 3 of 5

This house has a great view and nice grassy back yard. My daughter enjoyed lying in the hammock, and we saw a lot of wild life. The house has plenty of room, and we liked the open floor plan. The house is rustic so it seams to be more like a cabin, which is fine. There is a big kitchen table, and plenty of seating. It is reasonably located near many sight seeing attractions. We stayed at 4 different properties on 3 different islands while we were in Hawaii. We only chose rentals that had air conditioning. This rental said it had portable air conditioning upstairs, but it was not big enough. We stayed at another home that had portable air conditioning that did great, but they had a lot bigger unit. The whole front of this house has windows which provides a great view of the ocean, but it also causes a greenhouse affect when the sun comes up in the morning. It got HOT! Since the air conditioning could not keep up, we tried opening the windows. Not all of the windows open, so that didn't help any. It was definitely cooler outside than inside. If you're very cold natured, it maybe ok.

Very relaxing!

  • 4 of 5

I traveled to the Welea house with my husband, two kids (1 and 3) and my parents. We all felt very relaxed and at home here! The sounds of waves crashing against the rocks is so soothing and we all enjoyed whale watching and seeing the turtles. The house has a very well appointed kitchen which was great for us because we cooked most of our own meals. My daughter loved playing with all the "tea" sets (pretty sure they were sake sets but who cares when you are three!) and my son loved the extra space to ramble around. We had tons of space here no one was on top of each other. The house can get really warm, we did okay with opening up windows and doors and letting the trade winds cool it off. We also took advantage of the fans provided (thank you!). This house is begging for a lanai off the kitchen/living room so you can be outside and enjoy the ocean and grill. We are used to a propane grill, there is a charcoal grill available and Dennis the caretaker was nice enough to provide us with a large bag of charcoal and lighter fluid. This house is not new, but it is very comfortable. Nancy and Dennis were both really responsive with any of our concerns or questions. Thanks for a beautiful stay!

Sunrise with the Whales!

  • 4 of 5

We just returned from 12 days in this magical land known as Puna!!! We are an older couple, married 35 years! During our 12 day visit, we found this home to be extremely clean and neat. And it met our needs well! Our hosts were Welcoming in every sense of the word! And not intrusive in any way! The turtles were available daily for our entertainment and we found the area quiet, safe and relaxing. This was our 11th visit to this area, over 30 years. And soon to be our home. We've rented homes from Kehena to Kapoho. This is one of the nicest areas in Puna! The home needs abit of updating, which I'm told the new owner has plans for. But we, found it delightful. Everything worked, the Mgr. was easy to reach, and the veiw is perfect. I don't feel it is safe for young children. The interior sairway is steep and the windows on the 2nd story, open almost to the floor. But for everyone else, I give it a big thumbs up! You can't get much closer to the Sea, without getting in! It was spotless!!!

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay! We have added wood to some of the upstairs sliding glass doors to improve safety. We hope to finish that job in the near future because we want everyone as safe as possible. We do warn people with children that the children need to be supervised at all times. I am excited to spend time there next month to plan further updates/improvements.

Just what the Dr ordered!

  • 5 of 5

Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean at your back door is exactly what the doctor ordered! Grampa's house is spacious with all the required amenities. We were looking for a vaca that was off the beat and path and that is what we got! We had to do a little bit of driving but it was all worth it to take in the local culture. We experienced festivals, farmers markets, drum circles, hot springs and tide pools. Leave to busy resort experience behind. You won't be disappointed!

Great view. Accomodations need work.

  • 3 of 5

The oceanfront views were great. The house had lots of room for a big family. The house in general is badly in need of a remodel. Some windows have been replaced but most either don't open or don't close. The new windows should not be left open if you have smaller children as they could easily fall through the screen. I realize the price of renting the home is quite a bit cheaper than some comparable houses but I would rather pay a little more for a well maintained home. The chairs in the living room have a great view but need to be replaced. The location of the house was extremely quiet and relaxing but we really missed not having a lanai to sit on from upstairs. The only access to the back yard is through the basement bedrooms. The BBQ is not a gas grill it is charcoal so bring your own supplies. The swimming pool does not have a heater so was extremely cold. Pahoa was a nice little town with several convenient shops and restaurants. Overall the house is comfortable and fairly clean but in the condition it is in I cannot give our stay a 5 star rating.

Owner's Response: Living by the ocean makes home maintenance a challenge. We have made improvements and continue to plan improvements. This spring, I plan to discuss our future projects with our caretaker. I will also be looking into the possibility of a solar heating system for our pool. Safety is a huge concern, particularly for those with children. Constant supervision of children is required at our home.

Hawaii living is very different so we ask that you close your windows when you leave as it can rain for even a few minutes each day. We also have very special Hawaiian windows with crank casings that have a lever to unlock first before opening. Grandpa says please make sure you have teenagers dry off before coming in house as tile can be slippery if wet. We have a flight of stairs that is steep but well lighted and ask that you proceed slowiy. Our pool is 3/4 size about 4 1/2 ft deep. We have some float rafts, some snorkels. BRING AQUA SHOES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for tide pools. There is a Longs in Pahoa. PLEASE NOTE RATES ARE BASED ON 2 GUESTS.
