About Joseph

The owner purchased the spectacular 4000 square foot oceanfront Villa Magnifica as his dream home once he and his wife retire to California from the East Coast. It is beautifully situated on the Pacific Ocean and has amazing 180 degree whitewater views. With the Lagoon-style heated swimming pool and the big Jacuzzi the home is one of the best vacation homes located on the gorgeous Sunset Cliffs Nature Park.

Why Joseph chose Sunset Cliffs

The Sunset Cliffs area enjoys large oceanfront estate size lots ranging from 1/4 acre to 1 acre so this area of oceanfront homes does not have the congestion found in Mission Beach when the homes sit on tiny 3000 square foot lots. The space and panoramic views of the ocean makes the Sunset Cliffs area the best to vacation at in San Diego. Sunset Cliffs is the closest oceanfront home location to downtown San Diego with Balboa Park, the Zoo, the Gaslamp District, Seaport Village and Petco Park. We are just 5 minutes south of Sea World so you cannot find a more central location for an oceanfront home in San Diego.

What makes this villa unique

The home is professionally managed by Cal Vacation Homes who guarantees your satisfaction. If you are not 100% satisfied at any of our 8 Sunset Cliffs homes that we offer then you have the option to stay at your choice of any of our other 8 Sunset Cliffs San Diego homes which are available during your stay. We are the only company in San Diego offering this guarantee and we strive to exceed your expectations every day during every stay.

Spectacular oceanfront views

VRBO Bear stayed here

Dec 22, 2009

My friends and I used this luxury Oceanside Point Loma property as our “home base” while we attended a conference in San Diego. It was ideal! The home had more space than we expected – six bedrooms and four bathrooms (sleeps 16-22!) – which allowed each of us to enjoy our own room and bathroom. Though we had plenty of privacy, the home also had many comfortable central gathering points like the spacious kitchen, living room, and den. And the media fans of the group were not disappointed! The property was equipped with three Plasma HDTV’s and five 32” to 50” LCD HDTVs. One of the best things about this San Diego vacation rental was that it was located right on the beach! There was nothing better than returning from long days inside a conference room to this beautiful home. We sat on the front porch, protected from the wind by a glass enclosure, and stared out at our unobstructed Pacific Ocean view. One of my friends even thinks she caught a glimpse of a migrating California Gray Whale! And when we got tired of staring at the surfers, the bogey boarding, and the walkers and joggers along the beach trail, we moved our small party to the villa’s backyard where there was a heated swimming pool and raised Jacuzzi spa. Can you say heaven? To stretch our legs, we walked along Sunset Cliffs Nature Park, which meanders along the Pacific Ocean bordering the western edge of Point Loma. This gentle, peace-loving bear was ecstatic to see that the entire area is designated as a multiple species conservation area. Papa Bear could breathe freely, and relish the sights and sounds of the wildlife around us. We loved San Diego, and we especially loved Villa Magnifica. If a San Diego beach vacation with a sizable group is in your future, I highly recommend this property.

Location isn't everything

  • 3 of 5

Rating Details:

The property manager was more than helpful.

The vacation rental was clean.

I was very happy with the location.

I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental.

Reviewer Comments:

While the location for the Villa Magnifica is fantastic, the home itself is in need of some TLC. There are lots of things that need basic repair (the Master Bath has a great shower but obvious signs of water damage on the moulding and door) and updating. The restrictions against using the hot tub after 8 PM were silly, but because it only ran for 4 hours it was too cold anyway. and it seemed like half the light switches did nothing. The villa could truly be magnificent again, but it definitely feels like a rental that has been left on it's own for too long. And the price we paid for a week would pay for all the improvements.

Reviewer Comments:

This house is a great location on Point Loma. Great views of the sunset and large enough to accommodate a large group like ours (15). The house and pool were clean and well maintained. Only complaint is that some updates are needed in the kitchen. Garbage disposal did not work, one oven out of two worked and the refrigerator was pretty beat up. Overall a great experience.

The overall experience at Villa Magnifica was amazing. The views of the ocean form the living room(s) and front deck are bar none. The place was clean and in good shape. The pool and hot tub area is very private and roomy. Overall no negative notes on the place other then you need to drive/lyft/uber to your side destinations (nothing within walking distance). thanks!

Great place for a multi-family stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for three days in April 2015. We had four families -- so it was 8 adults and 12 children. We found sufficient room for all of us, though we had to put 3-4 kids into the pull out coaches in the den. The kids loved the pool and the hot-tubs. The linens and towels were plentiful. The manager was very courteous and nice. The beds were comfortable, and the living rooms were well furnished and pretty updated. The views over sunset cliffs were amazing. All in, I would say it was exactly as advertised.

On the con side:

* it is a bit dated, feels like it was an amazing house in the 1980s or 1990s but is a bit more of a rental now;

* it was hard to figure out the TVs/DVDs, etc and it wasn't really explained to us when we checked in;

* the beach is cool, but it is not easily accessible for kids; we took a walk down the stairs and across the rocks and basically had our own private beach but if you're looking for a house where you can just send the kids out to the beach, this neighborhood is probably not the right one

All in -- highly recommend this as a great base for a large, multi-generational group coming to see San Diego

Villa Magnifica

  • 4 of 5

We decided to have our annual family get together in San Diego this year, the week of February 14th, 2015. There were nine adults and two children, ranging in age from 2 to 67 years old. We were tired of winter and wanted to enjoy some warmer weather. Joseph Rohn met us at the house when we arrived and walked us through an orientation, explaining everything that we needed to know, ably answering all our questions. When we had trouble with the outdoor lights, he was over promptly to rectify that problem. He was always available when needed and very responsive. The house offered plenty of room for all of us. The house was laid out well, with the main bedrooms removed, down a wing, from the larger gathering areas of the house. The house was well stocked with bedding, linens, and bath towels. The kitchen was also well stocked. The location in Sunset Cliffs was spectacular; you were right across the street from the ocean. It was a short walk south to Sunset Cliffs Nature Preserve or you could stroll, northerly, for miles along the Sunset Cliffs, taking in the surfers, seals, and other people enjoying nature. The location was also convenient to the airport, Balboa Park, the Zoo, and North San Diego Bay with its many attractions. But, it is not a new house and like most homes of that vintage, in places it is starting to show its age. Where large portions of the house have been remodeled and refurbished, some have lagged behind. In certain rooms electrical outlets were at a premium, especially noticeable when trying to find outlets for today’s electronic devices. What outlets were there, were poorly located. Extension cords should be supplied. Many of the light switches seemed ineffective; e.g. where there should have been 4-way switches controlling the dinner room light only one switch worked. The security gate to the pool did not automatically latch. Bedroom #1 and Bedroom #2 which shared the “Jack and Jill” bath again had a 3-way switch that should have controlled the lighting in the bath room when entered from either bedroom. It didn’t; only one switch worked. The kitchen gas range could not be lit with the built-in igniter. You had to turn on the gas and use a match or propane lighter. The ice maker and built in water functions on the outside of the refrigerator did not work. When we checked out, all the above issues were brought to Joseph Rohn’s attention, which he thanked us for and vowed to look into and correct as soon as possible. I believe him.

Panoramic Ocean Views, Heated Pool w/8 Person Spa - A Great Complement to the Huge Oceanfront Home

  • 5 of 5

As the Grandparents of a large 3-Generation family of 22 persons we did Preview Tours of 4 different Sunset Cliffs homes prior to renting Villa Magnifica this winter for our Winter Family Reunion. The most important factor in our search was finding an oceanfront home where we could enjoy 180 panoramic ocean views and also have a swimming pool kept to a warm 80 degrees for all of our Grandkids. The Villa Magnifica House fulfilled our “picky” needs for just the right oceanfront home.

Here are the Pros and Cons:

Pros:

1) Villa Magnifica has the best panoramic 180 degree oceanview of all the homes that we did Preview Tours of on the Sunset Cliffs Nature Park.

2) The house has 6 separate showers which made for short shower lines for our group of 22 persons--the most showers we could find at other homes was only 4.

3) The house has the warmest swimming pool of all the oceanfront homes available for rent that we previewed on the Sunset Cliffs Nature Park.

4) We chose to heat the Jacuzzi from 10 am and 2 pm for the kids and then again 6 pm to 8 pm for the adults with the pool being heated to 80 degrees throughout the day (we paid extra for additional heat and it was worth it).

5) The pool stays warm even after the pool heat switched over to the Jacuzzi at 6 pm. The pool was 80 degrees at 6 pm when the pool heater switched to heat the Jacuzzi and the pool had only cooled a few degrees by bedtime--still plenty warm for our kids and grandkids to swim even with the air temp cooling down to the 50’s.

Cons:

1) We were all sad to have to leave after our week-long vacation due to the fact that the next reservation was checking in at 3 pm so we had to depart that morning (the Sunset Cliffs houses are some of the busiest in San Diego as I learned from my Preview Tours.)

We will definitely be back to enjoy the amazing ocean views and the best pool on the Sunset Cliffs Nature Park.

The home is oceanfront and sits above the undeveloped coastline of Sunset Cliffs Park. Beach access in the coastal park is via a City maintained cement staircase just 150 yards from the house. The nearby white sand beach is one of the nicest in San Diego.

The shoreline nearby includes coastal formations, tide pool areas (where you can view sea anemones, crabs, small fish and other sea life) and several white sand cove beaches that are accessible from steps and trails.

Sunset Cliffs Nature Park: Dedicated in 1983, Sunset Cliffs Nature Park stretches along the Pacific Ocean bordering the western edge of Point Loma. The Nature Park begins just north of Villa Mar Vista and follows the natural beauty of the California Coast for two miles where the 68-acre Sunset Cliffs Nature Park links up with the 640 acre Point Loma Ecological Preserve.

Golf: The shoreline immediately in front of the house includes coastal formations, tide pool areas (just 30 yards west of the house where you can view sea anemones, crabs, small fish and other sea life) and several white sand cove beaches that are accessible from steps and trails.

Naturalists visit Sunset Cliffs Nature Park to watch the annual migration of the California Gray Whale as it makes its springtime trip from the Bering sea the Baja California where the calf their young.

The house comes fully stocked with boogie boards, and all beach gear for sunny days at the beach. We also have sporting goods galore for the kids to play with.

Within a short drive is Mission Bay and Sea World as well as the world famous San Diego Zoo. At Mission Bay you can rent sailboats, motorboats, wave runners and other watercraft.
