About Karen Fleckenstein
Welcome! I am Karen Fleckenstein and I had the good fortune to build Villa by the Sea (Villa del Mare) above the Sandy Point Community in 2007 and have enjoyed living on South Whidbey Island full time since then. My beach access is 100 yards down Marissa Lane and to the right which completes my little slice of heaven. The 3,525 sq. ft. custom built dream home was designed to maximize the unobstructed views of Saratoga Passage and Mt. Baker from almost every room and includes a chef’s kitchen with top of the line appliances, beautiful granite counters, walk in pantry and custom cabinetry. The quality construction was built to last for multiple generations, and with the low maintenance landscaping, it’s a great home for weekends or vacations because you can “set it and forget it.” I live in the Villa with my Shih Tzu, MoJo, and nothing pleases me more than to share my home with YOU! When you rent the entire Villa, MoJo and I are gone on other adventures. Come live the dream in the nearest place to far away.

Beautiful house and gardens
Kitchen, family room and master suite are even nicer than the pictures. Quiet area. The views from the house are wonderful. Fast reliable internet. Owner responded immediately to questions. We could not use jacuzzi tub, one toilet or washing machine during our stay due to septic issues. Loved our visit to Whidbey Island.
Thanks for being understanding with some temporary septic issues. You left the Villa in perfect order.....I could hardly tell that anyone had stayed there.
**SEPTIC ISSUES** - NOT AS ADVERTISED
While the description and prior reviews of this home are lovely, upon our arrival we were instructed not to do laundry, to take short, staggered showers and use paper plates due to septic issues. The jacuzzi bath was off limits, and even the powder room toilet wasn't working. The owner opted to not tell us any of this prior to our arrival, even tho reading a review of August 9 I realized she clearly knew there was a septic problem. If we had known this in advance we would have found another place to stay, but the owner did not inform us.
In communicating my dissatisfaction with the owner, she blamed a drought (none of our family staying in the area were made aware of this) and became unresponsive to texts. She did do a load of laundry for us (we had been traveling prior to arriving and were looking forward to taking advantage of the laundry room but it was unavailable to us). She claimed she didn't want to cancel our reservation as the island was completely booked up, which a quick check on VRBO proved not to be true.
We reached out to her to discuss a reduction in the payment we had made, but she accused my husband of trying to extort her. Wow.
Other notes - the owner implied in an email to us that you can walk for miles on the beach from here. Note: at low tide only. 3 hours after low tide you can walk about 50 yards.
Karen is very emotional about this situation which I see as a business transaction - we paid a lot for this property and it simply was not as advertised. She is not willing to work with us.
I reached out to Vrbo and they agreed that the property was not as advertised and would reach out to the owner. I'm still waiting.
As soon as my guests arrive, they are greeted with a beverage, music, flowers, table set, and a framed notice on the kitchen island alerting them to the temporary issue we were having with the septic. I talked with the guests throughout the first 4 days, even doing laundry for them and they indicated everything was fine and they were enjoying their stay. On the forth day, I was in a meeting and couldn't respond to their question about the beach access (which was clearly explained on a tag on the house key.) My lack of IMMEDIATE response was clearly not a reason for their upset. Please see the review from 9/10 - 9/14 where the guests gave me a "5" even they also experienced the temporary septic issues.
Wonderful stay in Whidbey!
We had a fantastic time on Whidbey Island for our vacation. The house is a lot larger than it looks in photos and the views are incredible. The host (Karen) is thoughtful and welcoming and provides many extra touches that make the stay comfortable.
The house is on a septic system which can become overwhelmed as it did during our visit. We did not have access to the laundry and were instructed to take short showers while we were there. Karen was incredibly accommodating though and did our laundry whenever we asked (quick turnaround and folded on our doorstep!). We thought the system worked well.
The house has everything one could need- all the details have been thought of and, again, views and location could not be better. It was a very comfortable stay and we would be thrilled to stay in the Villa again. Highly recommend!
Perfect for a family
Beautiful home with a wonderful view. would rent it again in a heart beat.
Thank you for taking such good care of my Villa!
Myself, my husband and four friends rented the Seaside Villa for a five day trip to Whidbey. We had a great time! The house was very clean and comfortable, had great views, offered tons of space for the 6 of us and was very well-equipped. The pictures don't do it justice! The location was perfect as well - we had bikes with us and it was just a short 5-10 minute bike ride to the shops and restaurants in Langley as well as a scenic bike route. Check-in and communication was easy! We would definitely recommend Karen's place and would stay again.
Beautiful home and lovely hostess. Our family really enjoyed their time in Langley. We highly recommend!
