REMOTE Nature-Lover's Retreat in Chiricahua Mountains of SE Arizona

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Chiricahua Nature Lover's Retreat! Notched in the mountain at 5,500' elevation

Looking for a quiet place in nature to escape the northern winters? My 1/2 mile 4WD driveway will take you to an unbelievably remote (yet reasonably accessible) place where privacy and nature dominate. One of the last truly wild locations left in the lower 48, the Chiricahua Mountains. are part of Arizona's biologically diverse “Sky Islands” where you can find 375 bird species, coatimundi, mountain lion, bear, deer, turkey, even jaguar to keep you company.

This property is a Nature Lover's dream come true! Considered one of the most spectacular examples of the Sky Islands (see Wikipedia definition), the Chiricahua Mountains are home to one of the most biologically diverse places in North America.

9 life zones span the rise from the desert plains at base of the mountains to towering Chiricahua Peak (9,760' elevation) approximately 6,000 vertical feet of rise above the valley floor. These mountains are home to over 375 species of birds and other notable animal species including; coatimundi, black bear, mountain lion, coues deer, turkey, 13 types of hummingbirds and even jaguars have been spotted near here!

Elf owls nest in the trees near the cabin in April and May and the rare Elegant Trogon has been spotted before in Whitetail Canyon just below the house. Nectar feeding bats empty hummingbird feeders at night and nighttime sky viewing is superlative as there is virtually no ambient light from any town to dim the stars.

Nearby in Portal, the Southwest Research Station is operated by the American Museum of Natural History and provides scientists and researchers from around the world the chance to operate in one of the most biologically rich environments in the U.S. There are more species of mammals, birds, reptiles, bees and ants found here than any other place in the country!

The Chiricahua National Monument, AKA the Land of Standing Rocks, is just 4 miles west of the house up Whitetail Canyon. The cabin is notched into the mountains with almost no other neighbors anywhere nearby (and the ones that are here are very friendly and helpful).

The bucolic Colibri Vineyard is located just below the property and has the perfect microclimate for growing certain wine grapes.

The house is remote and therefore simple. Staying here is about the place not the amenities. That said, you should find everything you need to keep you comfortable during your stay!

About Mark Richter

I am a backcountry, remote property addict. I have spent the last 25 years seeking out the most unique remote properties I can find in Arizona and Colorado. There is nothing more healing than spending time in nature, and I have been working on mastering the balance between being remote yet being comfortable. I think you will find my little hideaway in the Chiricahuas to be a perfect combination of both. It makes me happy to share it with people that feel the same.

Mark Richter purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Mark Richter chose San Simon

I was living in the San Juan mountains in SW Colorado and wanted a place to get away from the harsh winters. A friend told me about Whitetail Canyon and I fell in love with the area on my first visit.

There are very few private properties in this area, so it took me a couple of years to find a property located in upper Whitetail Canyon where I wanted to be that was for sale. I bought the property from a renowned bird author that had used the property to film videos about hummingbirds and butterflies. He had completed his project and I was lucky enough to have a chance to purchase the property!

I own several remote properties, but this is probably my favorite because of the year-around good climate and the abundance of wildlife in the area. And you can literally walk to the Chiricahua National Monument just a couple of miles west up Whitetail Creek.

What makes this cottage unique

You will just have to come and see it for yourself to understand why this area is so special. Nobody that has ever visited my property was not blown away by the property and the entire surrounding area.
