Sound of the Sea and its six bedroom companion (Rising Sun) are like no other homes on Mount Desert Island. You'll find living here to be Heaven on Earth.
A $1000 Rebate is available for the week beginning Saturday, September 1. Net Price = $6000. Details at 9149620494.
I designed Sound of the Sea as a cathedral within which we, our dogs, and all our guests could welcome Nature – the sun, moon and stars; the sea, trees, rocks, flowers, birds, earth; the blue sky and the stormy sky -- into our hearts.
Enjoy our resident wildlife -- deer, turkeys, red fox family, marmots, weasels (including babies), cormorants, eagles, osprey, seals -- all visited us during July. But we're only a five minute drive to the center of Bar Harbor!
We're sure you'll feel Sound of the Sea is Heaven on Earth, once you've arrived! But for now, we'll describe five major differences between Sound of the Sea and other oceanfront homes on MDI that you might rent.
When we were renting vacation homes prior to building our own home, we stayed in many other parts of Mount Desert Island. When we stayed in Southwest Harbor on the western side of the island, we found the drive back and forth to Bar Harbor or to the most attractive parts of Acadia to be tiresome. Round trip, it’s over an hour. At night, the trip was often unwelcome.
So now, we especially appreciate our combination of great privacy with proximity to the Village of Bar Harbor (five to eight minutes, and we’re parked!); to the nearest Park Trails (a few minutes walk); and to Ocean Drive (seven minutes).
Sound of the Sea is at the very end of a very private series of roads off Main Street. No other location on MDI is more private. Despite this, we’re only minutes from Town. This combination is quite unusual.
3. SHORE FRONT:
Our ocean frontage is significantly different from almost all other vacation rentals. In particular, you’ll find that low tide brings mud flats in Somes Sound, Southwest Harbor and Hulls Cove. The same is true in many other locations (Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor, other areas of Bar Harbor). However, at Sound of the Sea our rocky ledges extend out into water that is deep enough to jump into, even at low tide.
In a nutshell, the ocean front at Sound of the Sea is beautiful and exciting at all times of day and night! All in all, you’ll find our ocean frontage to be as beautiful as any in the Park … but with two major differences:
• Ours is totally private, quite different from the Park.
• Ours is a minute from your bedroom… you don’t have to drive anywhere to enjoy it!
You’ll spend many hours in whatever vacation home you choose. Much better that it be really beautiful rather than really ugly! (Take a look at many of the other rental home photos, then decide for yourself.)
5. FOUR CRITICAL FEATURES:
Our home provides four especially important features. No other rental home has all of these. Though an alternative rental may be less expensive, the lack of even one of these four features can put a serious damper on your family’s vacation.
CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING:
Years ago, it was rare indeed for Bar Harbor to have a real heat wave. Now, even in June or September, we sometimes get three or four days in a row of 90 degree weather. We’re naturally cooled by our proximity to the ocean, but when that’s not enough, our central air conditioning keeps the entire house perfectly comfortable during the hottest days. Imagine a week’s vacation when each day you come home to a hot, stuffy house. Then imagine coming home to Sound of the Sea…
AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM VS MILDEW OR MOLD:
During the many vacations we spent on MDI before building our first home, Rising Sun, we all too often encountered houses with a whiff of mustiness or even worse, mildew or mold. You’ll find this especially in some of the older homes. Not enjoyable!
We designed our home to provide strong cross-ventilation, taking advantage of the ocean breeze. But if the windows are closed due to the weather outside, the whole house air filtration system circulates and replaces the inside air with outside air. Simply put, no matter the time of year or the weather outside, you’ll find the most pure, delightful air in Sound of the Sea.
LIMITLESS HOT WATER:
Not only do our homes provide instant hot water, but it’s unlimited as well. You’re quite unlikely to find this luxury anywhere else.
WHOLE HOUSE EMERGENCY GENERATOR:
For whatever reason, the power supply on MDI is not the most dependable. Losing light, water, refrigeration and air conditioning (if any) is not fun. If the outage lasts a day or more, it really puts a damper on your vacation. Our generator will easily power the whole house, including our air conditioning.
The photos will show you just how unique a choice Sound of the Sea would be for your family’s vacation. But when you’re considering other alternatives, also keep these five attributes of Sound of the Sea in mind:
• Shore Front
• And Four Critical Features
Now for more details about the house, its furnishings, its views and its surroundings.
Every room (except the Entrance Hall and Reading Room) has four or more windows with ocean views... the Living Room has eight, plus French Doors.
Each of the three bedrooms in Sound of the Sea has a King Bed, en suite Bathroom (with instant and unlimited hot water), and best of all, four or more windows looking onto Frenchman's Bay and the Gulf of Maine. Your views are always spectacular. None of the old mansions in Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor or Bar Harbor can compare in this regard. Not one!
Zephyr: "A soft, gentle breeze." Each of the bedrooms has windows on three sides, allowing you to create a zephyr of sea air flowing through your bedroom. I placed the windows and the beds so that, when you're lying on your stomach with your head on the pillow, you're comfortably looking out at the ocean. And if you're lying on your back, with a little tilt of your head, you're looking up into tree canopies, watching birds (including eagles) resting on the tree limbs or floating in the sky above.
High tide is only 75 feet away. At low tide, unlike so many MDI waterfront rental locations, there are no mud flats, but rather glorious granite ledges with Frenchman's Bay lapping over and among them and deep water immediately at the end of the rocks.
Aside from its intimate relationship with the ocean, you'll immediately appreciate these features:
-- Gorgeous colors in every room, modeled after the colors in Emily's famous flower gardens in NY. Each color is our own creation; we combine different pigments to get just the right hues, taking into account not only the particular wall, but also walls that you'll see through open doors into other rooms.
-- Also related to color, you'll find Oriental rugs (mostly antique Persian) throughout the house. Each one, we've selected from among hundreds that we've considered.
-- A kitchen modeled after those found in Michelin-starred Manhattan restaurants. Guests who love cooking do fall in love with our kitchen and pantry (and sharp knives)! Also, you'll find the pantry well-stocked with herbs, spices, salts, peppers, olive oils, vinegars, pastas, rices, and much more.
-- Ours is a unique location for bird watching, from both inside and outside. The deck on the third floor, "Eagle Watch", is a magnificent site for this purpose.
-- Spectacular thunderous waves during and after rain or snow storms.
-- Magnificent oak and maple trees are beautiful during the spring and summer, and truly spectacular during the fall. I personally love them just as much during the winter, while they're sleeping under a blanket of snow. If you're a tree person and you visit, I'd like to tell you about the measures I took to protect "Phoebe", our Triple Oak tree, from harm caused by construction. When we bought our land in 1983, we promised her that we'd always protect her, and we've done our best to live up to that promise.
-- A ten minute walk along our very private and beautiful little road to nearby Acadia trails leading to Sand Beach and Compass Harbor.
-- High speed internet (hard-wired in each bedroom); free Wi-Fi; free land-line telephone service; excellent cell service; TV in each bedroom and large screen TV in the Turret Room.
-- Kebo Valley Golf Club, the eighth oldest course in the country, offering gorgeous mountain vistas while you play this challenging course, is but a seven minute drive from our home.
-- Tennis courts five minutes away.
-- If you like to fish (surf casting), call Ned to discuss the possibilities right outside the house. (We provide rod, reel, tackle, license and advice.) Hint: there's a particular section of the ocean, right off our rocks, in which cormorants swim and fish year round. See our Photo Gallery to meet our cormorants!
-- Our exceedingly private, secure location at the end of our narrow road, which is as pretty as any of Acadia's carriage roads. We walk it every morning with our dogs, and also love to walk at night under the star-strewn heavens. Winter, when twenty or thirty inches of powdery snow lines each side of the road and the sky is most star-laden, is absolutely the best (so long as you're dressed warmly!)
-- Our screened porch, set up for family dining, allows you to embrace the sea in all its moods. Morning coffee, afternoon tea, evening cocktails, and dinner... you'll never find a more perfect setting for these enjoyments.
-- Eagle Watch is best experienced by one or two people (adults). It's for meditation for one, or love for two. You're thirty feet up, looking down on high tide. Frequently, eagles will fly right past or soar overhead or dive for their breakfast into the sea in front of you. Sunrise over the water or starlight above... Life takes on new meaning when you're alone here with the quiet of the thunderous sea.
