About the property

Architecturally designed, decorator furnished 6,700 square foot home on Sunset Mountain is literally five minutes from downtown Asheville.

With it's walls of windows, this beautiful contemporary home is filled with light and cheer and situated on 2.2 acres with memorable views of the western North Carolina mountains and the city of Asheville. The day and night time show that nature puts on from the master bedroom windows is particularly breathtaking. You'll go to sleep each night with the city twinkling below you from each bedroom.

This is a very special home with a gourmet kitchen, large spacious rooms, two long decks for enjoying meals, views and tranquility. There are three bedrooms, including the master suite, on the third floor, two bedrooms on the lower level with the main floor separating these two levels for privacy, if desired. The size and design of the house create spaces for groups to gather as well as nooks and crannies for alone-time.

If exercise is your thing there is nothing better than the beautiful roads on Town and Sunset Mountains. You will find the routes peaceful with great views during each season. This is true whether you're up for a leisurely 15 minute stroll or a more aggressive 6 mile hike. You'll leave the asphalt and traffic behind while you de-stress with nature's beauty.

About Mary Collins

The first move I made in my life was to Asheville NC. Home was Toledo, Ohio and my husband, who had the spirit of an adventurer, decided it was time for a change. He had traveled often to this part of the country on business and loved it. He always said Toledo had too many days of grey skies but that Asheville had the most beautiful blue skies day after day. So, we began a series of scouting trips and eventually found the land where we would build our home.

Mary Collins purchased this house in 1994

Why Mary Collins chose Grove Park- Sunset

We were lucky to get this piece of property. It was owned by an engineer who had been with the the Ford Motor Company. He planned to build his dream house on it and even had a scale model he showed us when we visited. Unfortunately for him, but wonderful for us, his wife said she was staying put - no new houses in her future. So, the spot was ours. We loved it because of its privacy and views but also because it was over two acres and only 5 minutes from downtown. We worked with architects, landscape designers and interior designers to shape our dream house. It is a very long home which takes advantage of the topography and views, has walls of windows which let the light and views shine and beautiful extras like granite, limestone, maple and cork. The finished product exceeded our expectations. It is very artistic and spacious, yet warm and welcoming. We raised our family here and have enjoyed every minute of living in this beautiful home. Now it's time for us to share and we would love for you, your family and friends to come for a visit.

The North Carolina Alps

  • 5 of 5

Selfishly I'd like to leave a bad review here to deter future guests and have this rental to myself. However Mary's effort and exceptional detail throughout deserves more.

Everything about this experience was stunning.

From the communication, the property, the house, the linens, the views, etc. were all top-notch.

This property's proximity to downtown while still feeling secluded with a peaceful vista cannot be oversold.

We will absolutely work with Mary again.

Would go again in a heartbeat

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of ten staying in this lovely home. The owner has provided for every convenience. When we left, I emailed her that we all agreed that it was as if we had stayed in the home of a good friend. To that end, the house is close to everything, the views off of the deck are phenomenal and there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out. We all went different ways to different places during our visit, and everyone agreed that the location (with that view) was ideal.

The owner left out most of the small things that make a house a home available to her guests. For instance, her collection of spices was left out, and there was dish soap and laundry detergent available. She also had enough chairs for all of us to fit around the dining table and the table on the deck. The bathrooms are spacious and the bedrooms easily accommodated two persons. The deck is full of flowering pots. There is also a potted herb garden--we availed ourselves of it freely!! The kitchen is amenable to more than one cook, and it is extremely well-equipped. We cooked in for every supper, and never had a problem with too few utensils, pots, etc.

The only issue we experienced was some confusion over what Asheville recycles and how to sort the same. Perhaps some sort of printed guidance would be nice. We were baffled....

It was refreshing to stay in a rental that did not feel like a rental. Thanks to Mary for providing us the gift of accessing this home.

Owner's Response: I can honestly say you ladies are the first to ever attempt sorting the recyclables. What amazing and delightful guests. I'm honored that I lived up to your expectations for southern hospitality. Come back any time -- we'll do lunch!

Breathtaking property with a view to match!

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous house nestled close to downtown Asheville. The completely secluded lot makes you feel like you have the mountain to yourself, but within just a couple of minutes you can be in the heart of downtown Asheville. The best of both worlds! The house is incredibly spacious, allowing for plenty of room for a large group. Mary was extremely accommodating and we enjoyed every minute of our stay here!

Beautiful home. Beautiful setting. Convenient to downtown, Grove Park and not too far from Biltmore. Great furnishings. Everything super clean. Owners made us feel like this was our home for two nights. Very warm and welcoming. Even got to see a bear a quarter mile from the property! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

The scenery in the Blue Ridge Mountains is one of the reasons Asheville has been named again and again as one of the top vacation destinations in the US. Our home is located on Sunset Mountain about two levels above the world renowned Grove Park Inn. You'll leave the pressure and noise of your everyday life behind as your car travels up Town Mountain Road. Our property is peaceful and private with a stream running through it so you truly can rest and renew -- read your paper on the deck, have some coffee and then take a walk around the mountain. But as nice as this is, you must go down the the mountain occassionally! Downtown and it's many diverse offerings is less than a five minute drive. Asheville is known for it's vibrant arts scene, historic architecture and eclectic dining and brewery options. There are attractions like the Biltmore Estate, the NC Aboretum, Blue Ridge Parkway drives and the Nature Center; health and wellness activities such as cave therapy, salt water flotation, hot springs, and massages of every kind; shopping at unique local boutiques in the Historic Biltmore Village, downtown and the River Arts District. The lists go on and on. There is something for everyone to do, eat and buy while you visit. Asheville has a long history of being a warm and welcoming with something unexpected around every bend. You will leave planning when you will next return.
