2 Weeks in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Our group (3 adults, one two year old) spent an amazing two weeks at Waimanalo Beach House.

We arrived on Valentines day, so unfortunately the owners were out to a nice dinner and we were unable to meet them in person.

The house was fantastic. Looks exactly like the pictures. All the amenities you would find at home. Lots of beach bags/cooler bags, beach toys, chairs, towels, etc. Fully stocked kitchen. We did all our own cooking for the two weeks, so this was essential. We were provided a pack and play crib and high chair for our daughter, and tons of toys to keep her occupied. She especially loved the rocking horse! I only wish the coffee cups were larger ;)

While not directly on the beach, the house is 3 houses from the public beach access - a VERY short walk to the most beautiful beach I've ever been on. Great surf for body boarding!

My only complaint about the beach was that due to it being on the Windward side, and us travelling in the Winter, some days the Tradewinds were VERY strong. But being an island of many beaches, we just took the opportunity on those days to visit other beaches!

The location of the house on the island was fantastic. Far enough away from everything to feel nice and private, yet close enough to get anywhere with a short drive. 15 mins to Hawaii Kai groceries and Costco, 15 mins to Kaulia shopping/groceries, 30 mins to Waikiki, about 60 mins to North Shore.

A car is essential though when staying here. There isn't much other than small stores/local small grocery store/gas stations within walking distance.

We had an amazing time. Highly recommend the following: Hanauma Bay snorkelling, Waikiki beaches, shopping and surfing, Dole Plantation was touristy but fun, North Shore shrimp trucks (tasty), Diamond Head and Makapu'u hiking (we did Makapu'u every other day), and so much more.

I only wish the flight was shorter so we could come back every year!!!

Waimanalo Beach House

  • 5 of 5

This house was in a great neighborhood, a two minute walk to a GREAT, quiet beach. Our family went boogie boarding every day. Pamela was super accommodating, the house has about anything you need. It's not pristine, it's very homey, comfortable, with plenty of room for our family of six. It was very private, with a yard full of trees on two sides. We got in well after dark, and had the best surprise ever to wake up to the biggest full wall of windows looking into a veritable jungle of trees and happy birds. Would recommend this property without hesitation.

Beautiful relaxing vacation spot on Oahu

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our family of 5. The home has two wonderful bedrooms, each with window AC and very comfortable beds. The second bedroom also has a twin in an alcove that my children fought over (ages 12, 10, and 8). The living area was nicely furnished with a view of a jungle in the backyard. The trees and birds were wonderful to look at. The neighbor has chickens that the kids loved to watch also. The house is split into two parts and the caretaker stays in the other half. He is around if you need anything.

The house has everything you will need. Linens, towels, beach towels, beach toys, grill, etc. The kitchen is very user friendly. We were very happy. There are fans in all of the rooms, it really only got warm in the late afternoon.

The beach is breathtaking. Since it is not a beach park, it is usually empty, or just a few others on the beach. It is steps away...3-4 houses to beach access. It was very convenient to the house. My children loved the tire swing and rope swing that were on the beach. The waves are calm and inviting. It was never too rough to go out (as it can be on the east coast in NJ). The beach had some type of pine tree about 20 feet from the shore, that provided natural shade.

Waimanalo has causal counter service restaurants that have local fare--plate lunches and shave ice! We loved staying in a quiet residential area and driving to the activities on the island. We did Pearl Harbor, Dole Plantation and the North Shore (Waimea Falls) in one day. Its an hour drive along the windward coast back to Waimanalo from the North Shore. We loved Waimea Falls--life guarded swimming hole with falls. The Makapu'u Lighthouse walk is nearby. Its a great early morning activity.

We would return to this house and Waimanalo if we ever return to Ohau.

Family Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

Loved the location and relaxation! Less than a block from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And there are so many things to do within a scenic 15 minute drive -- hiking, shopping, and more beaches. The beach house was equipped with everything we needed -- it was nice to have all the beach equipment for our use and a well-stocked kitchen. The beach house was very comfortable for our family of 4. Definitely hope to stay here again on our next trip to Hawaii!

Location, location, location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the beach house in Nov/Dec for three weeks. The beach is fantastic and great for kids, even in winter - white sand, shallow a long ways out, fun for boogie-boarding and making sand castles. Public beach access was only about 4 houses down. The house is like a small duplex with a tenant (caretaker) in the other side, and it could use some upgrades (minor roof leak in the bedroom, patio doors are stuck, massage chair is broken), but it was very spacious and contained all the amenities required, including a very nice washer/dryer set. The beds were very comfortable, and we were able to get by with the ceiling fans at night and didn't need to turn on the air conditioner. In the winter there isn't that much natural light, but there is a lot of privacy and peaceful greenery provided by the surrounding foliage. The house is very kid-friendly and safe - we were able to let our 8 month old crawl around everywhere and only had to be careful of a couple of electrical sockets near the ground. There was a pack and play and a highchair provided, and we left behind a portable booster seat so hopefully future visitors can use that too. We had to be careful about sweeping up after every meal to avoid ants but it's a family beach house, not the Hilton. The only thing we were lacking was a patio (there is outdoor seating available in the carport though).

Waimanalo Beach is almost entirely recreational/residential with few businesses within walking distance other than a small McDonald's and some small groceries and take-out joints. A car is a necessity, and we found ourselves mostly driving into Kailua (about 15 minutes drive) for groceries where there is a Foodland, Whole Foods, Safeway and Target. If you are looking for a quiet, restful vacation though, Waimanalo is definitely that. Even in the wintertime the beach was amazing and although it rained most days when we were there, the rain would usually only last for about 10 minutes and then the rest of the day would be sunny and warm. There was an amazing Christmas parade that passed by the end of the block in December, which was a nice treat for our 5-year-old - take a plastic bag with you, they give out lots of candy! It was about a half hour drive to Waikiki so we were able to visit many of the tourist attractions in that area as well.

Pamela was very responsive and helpful with our questions/requests. We had a wonderful vacation and have many happy memories of our time in Waimanalo.

Great host, nice location

  • 4 of 5

The owners went out of their way to make our stay really enjoyable. The seaside cottage is confortable and has everything you need for your beach vacation. We were very happy to have chosen Waimanalo instead of Waikiki. Very quiet neighborhood. We took walks to see the sunrise almost every morning. Kids had a lot of fun with the boards. There are good mexican restaurants that you can walk to from the house. Waimanalo was one of the best beaches in Oahu!
