Why the Owner Chose West Seattle

We never get tired of the wonderful water views of West Seattle, the convenience of being cose to sites of downtown, airport, our Alki Beach, yet living in a quiet neighborhood.. The sparkling night lights seen across the water in the evening is unsurpassed in beauty.
Because we are 7 minutes from downtown and minutes from all major highways, West Seattle is a great convenient place for your base stay. Why pay $35 a night to park downtown when you can look at downtown across the water yet be there in minutes!
You must try the West Seattle Water Taxi (below home) to downtown and sport stadiums, it is a fabulous savings over parking fees and very relaxing!

The Unique Benefits at this House

Have your coffee on one of the three decks, watch an eagle fly overhead, hear a sea lion bark, watch the cruise ships crossing by, and plan your day’s events.
How about walking down the lane to below the home and catching the walk on ferry and go over Elliott Bay and dock downtown all for $3.50 Shop at world famous Pike Street Market over 100 years old, visit the Aquarium, Sam Art Museum, go to baseball or football games, or hop on a tour of the underground Seattle. When you come back just in time for happy hour at famous Salty's on Alki right by where you dock. What a hard day you say. Rent a Kayak, roller blade, take a dive lesson, or take of fishing with a group on Alki Beach. We are here to guide you to great restaurants and great items of interest during your stay.

Owner's Map of West Seattle

Doug and I have been married for 35 years. Doug was born in West Seattle, I in Denver. We met in Nashville TN. We came for a vacation and that was it, I had to move here.
I truly believe Seattle is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. And, West Seattle surrounded by water, and views of the mountains, what can I say.
My background in interior design for 18 years, allowed me to refurbish and remodel this 1911 Craftsman home with true integrity, yet elegance. We now live across the street in a smaller home and have made this the "Vacation Home", and have met delightful people who have loved the home as we do. Come visit us, and maybe you will have to move here too! If you do, we will take care of that too, as we are Coldwell Banker Real Estate Agents (15 years) Yes, can you believe we work together, live together, and are still married. Negotiating specialist!
We look forward to meeting you for your next vacation!

House on the hill

Guest: Beth and Larry (Palm Springs, California)
Date of Stay: 12/24/11 Review Submitted: 01/02/12

Loved the home and the way the bedrooms had views of the water and city. We will have to come back in the summer months to enjoy the decks and warmer weather outside. Location couldn't have been better, close to stores, restaurants and beach. Have I mentioned the view was incredible! Glad that it was available when we were coming into town. The wireless internet was a big plus.

Owner response:Thank you Beth for taking the time to express all your compliments. It was great to meet you all and hear about your family and history in West Seattle. Looking forward to your next visit, and our prayers are with your Mom for better health!

BEAUTIFUL, COMFORTABLE, CLEAN, AND GREAT VIEWS

Guest: Paul (Colorado)
Date of Stay: 11/30/11 Review Submitted: 12/14/11

We rented Doug and Lorna's home the first week in December with another couple. Doug and Lorna's home was remodeled in the not too distant past and they did a wonderful job in taking a beautiful older historic home and making it modern without loosing its original appeal. They have all of the modern conveniences and amenities which made our visit comfortable. The one thing that we really enjoyed but did not have the opportunity to enjoy as much was the deck with GREAT views of the Seattle skyline...it was just a little too cold to be outside for very long. We would reccommend this property to our friends and family and would of course rent again from the Ava's if we ever returned to Seattle.

Owner response:Paul, Thank you for your kind comments. Yes you must come again and have warmer weather for the decks. Email me when you think you can visit our "vacation home" again. Bye for now.

My wife and I had a wonderful time in this lovely home. The views are simply spectacular. Nice quiet neighborhood and just a short drive to the lovely Alki beaches and water taxi to city. Great restaurants and amenities without even going into the city No issues at all regarding cleanliness, neighbors, accessability, etc. Everything that was promised was delivered!! Lana and Doug, the owners, were pleasant and helpful, but respected our privacy. I would LOVE to rent this property again sometime!! Thanks again!!

Owner response:Greg, thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your visit. We are so glad Seattle and our vacation home is a great memory for you. Please come again!

Stunning Views!

We really enjoyed our family stay in this one of a kind Alki Beach Home. It was all that we needed to be comfortable for the whole week, with brand new grand baby in tow. There was room for us to enjoy dinner together, sit and play games, and enough space to find our own little get a way from it all. We especially enjoyed the spectacular views at night as we were drifting off to sleep. With the dreary weather we were quite content in our cozy and comfortably furnished surroundings. When we had questions, the property owner was readily available. Thanks.

Excellent views - the best aspect of the house

Guest: NA (AZ)
Date of Stay: 06/11/10 Review Submitted: 06/20/10

My family and I just returned from a week in West Seattle at this property. Absolutely the best views from the home. It ends there. We were a group of 6 adults, 4 in our mid 50's and 2 in their 70's. The home is not senior friendly as all bedrooms (2) are up two flights of stairs. There is a fold out bed in the 3rd bedroom. There is only one shower in the guest bath for all guests. There is a tub that again is not very senior friendly, it takes a step stool to get into after climbing over all of the spots and nozzles. We found out via a note by Doug Ava that we are not allowed on the deck before 7:30 AM, so as not to wake the neighbors. It get light at 4:30 AM. We never met the owners who live across the street, but they came by twice when we where gone to leave notes under the doormat as to keeping noise down. Again 50's and 70's. We where in bed most nights by 10PM. And the only movement on the patio before 7:30 AM was the two 70 year olds. I've used VRBO in the past and have had good experiences. I was not provided a welcome packet with instructions in the home or via email when I rented the property. This home had post it notes for directions in various places. I also rented this property based on the description of the 2 minute walk to the beach. I guess if you are a runner and like a down hill run that would be true. Otherwise, it is down a curvy road and I'd estimate close to 3/4 of a mile. As well it states there are gas heaters on each deck, not so. There is one on the upper deck and it is not possible to move it to the bottom larger deck where we would congregate. The chairs on the deck are all rought iron and bar and coutner level height. Not very comfortable or good for seniors. There were also many personal items left in the home, very strange, fur coats, suits, pictures, etc...the basement which is where the washer and dryer are located is like going through a maze, too much clutter. And lastly, the house is not as clean as it should be for the price we paid. There was a dirty dust rag left on the fireplace mantle, the freezer is filthy, glassware is coated with dust and the shower was, well just gross. If you are looking for a great view and no other ammenities then this should suit you fine. Renter beware!

Owner response:How sad it makes us that in 4 ½ years of vacation renting we have had a very unsettling comment. That her concerns could not be addressed while occupying the home is curious, nor was a note left in home commenting on such concerns. The heat lamp was mentioned and certainly a part to repair the igniter could not be ordered and received in days. We hope said guests as others benefited by the heat lamp on the deck of the master bedroom. As the guest and I had spoken we she reserved the home, I felt if her family was that aged maybe the home was not a good match. I had offered to return her deposit weeks before her arrival when she mentioned health problems and stair concerns. She insisted that it would be fine. We strongly feel that any cleaning concerns have to be addressed while our guests are here. It is only fair to us that we have the opportunity to have our cleaning persons address any complaints. I must state that a dusting cloth left out is NOT something I would scold for. These guests were allowed a check out time of noon, which allows 4 hours for our crew. It is not a perfect world, and we would hope any concerns to be addressed while our guests our here. We live on the block and can address any concerns. We do not pop in and intrude on our guest’s privacy, but are available on cell phones 24/7. My husband had noise complaints twice from neighbors being awakened before 6 am. We discretely left notes politely asking that deck noise not begin before 8 am. I must state at this time, we have not EVER had a complaint from our neighbors of 22 years before now and had to respect their concerns. We ask as noted in the home on a flyer to lower noise at 10pm, which is very reasonable. Because of the water below home noise can be amplified, as our older guests were not aware of how loud or how early they were out on the deck, so a note was left. We have stayed at many varied VRBO homes and as many owners, have items stored. My daughter has items stored as she has moved out of state. I do not believe at this time we could have done anything to make this guest happy; otherwise she would have addressed supposed issues while here. Only a heat lamp not working was ever mentioned. We will not let negativity discourage us from enjoying sharing our view home with pride and hospitality, And hope to have our recent guests refute these comments.

Dear Doug and Lorna, I cannot thank you both enough for this past weekend. I tried to make sure all linens were in the laundry room and dishes put in the dishwasher. I would have run the wash but I was not sure when you would be back by so I did not want it sitting for too long. Your place is beautiful. The sound system worked great (always made sure to turn it down after 10 pm) and the view is simply breathtaking. We toured the city big time on Saturday but basically just enjoyed the view from the house on Sunday since it is so nice. We actually went over to the university district for lunch on Saturday, ended up meeting a cool young couple and they gave us ride on their boat all through Lake Union and Lake Washington! How about that for a tour! We went to Daniel's Broiler on Saturday night and had a great meal. We wanted to go to La Rustica on Sunday but they did not open until 5:00 pm and we had to get to the airport. I left a bottle of wine for you guys to have. Your neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Rice were very nice and hospitable when I spoke with them Friday evening. We both had the best time. We left on Sunday in agreement that we could live in West Seattle no doubt about it. Thank you once again and I wish you both the very best this summer! Sincerely, Hunter

We thoroughly enjoyed our all-too-brief stay in your beautiful home. It has such grace and elegance, like stepping back in time to the early 20th century. The restorations and furnishings evoke that bygone era, yet the contemporary amenities assure the comfort of guests. The views are stunning and the location couldn't be better. Thank you so much for sharing such a delightful and charming home.

Owner response:Thank you so much for taking the time to comment in this sometimes much too busy world. Look forward to your coming again soon! Lorna
