First of all the views are to die for. We enjoyed our stay and the easy of getting around the city was great. Everything we needed was right there including an electric can opener. The owners are on top of it and ready to help a drop of a hat. We would love to return and stay again the next time we come to Seattle. We all enjoyed our stay and would tell everyone who comes to Seattle to stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My family & I just returned from a trip to Seattle & stayed in this West Seattle home. We wasted two grand for a nasty old house with an intruding owner. PROS: Lorna (the owner) was extremely helpful during the booking and check-in process. The location is also wonderful! West Seattle/Alki Beach area is full of small shops that are all within walking distance. This house has a wonderful deck that has a gorgeous view of the Seattle skyline. In the master bathroom, the shower has a steam-option which is fantastic (although a little hot on your toes if you get them too close to the steam spout). The large kitchen is very nice for cooking and the owners keep it fully stocked. CONS: Unfortunatley there were so many negative attributes about this house & our stay here, that made this the wrong place for us. (1) This house is old... very old. It looks & smells like an old antique shop. There is clutter everywhere! (Small children beware) (2) The BIGGEST turnoff for us was the lack of privacy! The owners live next door to this vacation rental home. A man (who NEVER identified himself) came over SEVERAL times. A few examples... On Saturday night, my family was playing a board game in the dining room, with the french doors to the patio open (for ventialtion). The owner snuck up the patio deck & stuck his head in and told us that we were being too noisy and shut the doors... at 10pm on a Saturday night. Really?! We are property owners ourselves and a 24-hour notice to enter the property is required by law. On Monday morning, at 8am, the same man was watering the flowers around the house and was peering in the windows... I noticed a man staring at me through the window as I was walking to get coffee in my PJs! He then continued to sit on the porch & read his mail - we felt so uncomfortable, my father had to approach the man and ask him to leave nicely, the man then had a nasty reponse. Completley rude, disrespectful, & CREEPY. (3) The layout & furniture are awful and the only rooms that are comfortable to sit in is the dining room and patio. There is only one shower for everyone to use inside the master bathroom. The tub in the second bathroom is extremely hard to get in, so that my parents were unable to use it. The deck furniture was old, nasty, & rusted. The toaster didnt work. The sound system was outdated. The old fridge never got cold enough. This house really only sleeps 2 couples comfortably. I could go on for days. RENTER BEWARE.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: In view of the most recent renters response I encourage all to just look at comments from previous renters. To start, the renter was allowed to move in early, was greeted with a bottle of wine (now don't plan on that when you come lol ) and she complimented the house. On Saturday night at 11:25, the french doors were wide open to the deck and the laughter could be heard at the end of the block and we got a complaint. Signs are posted in the house about noise after 11PM and it being a residential neighborhood. When I approached them I could not have been more polite and briefly mentioned I was the landlord, it was noisey, and I gently closed the doors. By the way, when I first said I was the landlord the woman said in a friendly tone, "come in landlord". And of course, its good business to be nice and friendly which I was. Also, when I approached the group there were about 10 people sitting around the table drinking and playing games and being noisey. The signed rental agreement specified 4 people and any parties over 4 needed prior approval along with other requirements. 24 hr notice is for entering the home and not approaching an entry door which is what I did. On Sunday I watered the palm trees down on the parking strip and said hello to the group as they were coming home and they were aloof and unfriendly. On Tuesday I needed to water (first time up in the yard watering while they were renting the home) it was 9:30 in the morning and I briefly watered the planter at the kitchen window in seconds and continued on in the yard for about 20-30 minutes. (This was not a bedroom window) Oh well, I can be more careful about the kitchen window. When watering I did look at my mail while waiting for the hose to saturate. (It was 80 degrees all week) My watering was no different than having a lawn care company show up at reasonable hours and doing their job which is what I did. In conclusion, I interacted with them 3 times, once regarding noise, once down on the sidewalk in front of the house, once when watering, and these were the only times being on the property during their week stay. The people who stayed the week before raved about the house and said the pictures did not do justice. Again, look at the previous reviews. In 3.5 years we have only had two complaints and in each case it was after we gave polite reminders about noise. Plus, the subject renters left our back door unlocked after they had left. Sincerely

The views from the decks and almost every room in the house are simply amazing. The pictures don't do them justice. Will never forget sitting on the deck and watching the moon rise through the Seattle skyline. The neighborhood is very quiet and a nice retreat from the city and sight seeing. Perfect neighborhood for relaxing walks and decompressing from our busy lives. The bathrooms in this classic home have been wonderfully upgraded. Used the steam and jacuzzi both without any problems and they were a great way to end the day and relax after day trips for golfing and sight seeing. Location is very close to downtown Seattle and West Seattle/Alki also has everything you need from grocery stores and fish market to restaurants and taverns. Had the added benefit of having our son (who lives in downtown Seattle) do some advance scouting of various rental locations and we all agreed couldn't find a nicer place to stay this close to Seattle. But that was just the beginning. Simply cannot emphasize how great the views are. We noticed everyone taking pictures (from ferries, Space Needle, parks, etc) of the Seattle skyline. Well we had those views all day and night long from this home. It sure didn't hurt that during our week we had absolutely wonderful weather. It only rained lightly on one morning and every other day was full of sunshine. Finally, Doug and Lorna were both the most professional hosts from the initial contact and through out our stay. They took care of all the details, were available for questions, but never bothered us at all. Would definitely rent again when we come back to Seattle and would recommend to anyone headed to Seattle.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Rick, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such nice comments about the home, and us. We really know how busy our folks are, and to take the time to do this is really sweet! Guest really need to know about the house, views, neighborhood, and convenience. The experience is sure better than a typical Hotel. We too have stayed at VRBO's, and try to compare and see what we can improve on to better the experience of guest. We too love the view. Cannot beat seeing the city and the water in my eyes. Please visit us again. Your family is so nice! And..thank you for leaving the home in such nice shape when you left. Come again, and keep me up on your plans. Doug and Lorna Ava

We stayed here as a launching point for touristy activities in the Seattle and Woodinville areas. The house is beautiful with magnificent bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and three decks with amazing view across Elliott Bay of the Seattle skyline. There is a water taxi less than a mile from the home, but a drive into Seattle took less than 20 minutes in spite of construction. The Alki area has a lot of fun restaurants. Our favorite was Duke's Chowder House. We would definitely stay here again on future trips to the area. Thank you for everything, Lorna!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

I've rented many houses in Seattle over the past several years and this is by far the best yet. The location is an easy trip into downtown Seattle, but with the benefit of the quaint restaurants and shops of West Seattle. This house is equipped with absolutely everything. The bathrooms were fabulous, the whole house sound system amazing, the views of downtown Seattle spectacular. The house's decor was far beyond any rental house I've ever been in and the owners were accommodating and welcoming. As an avid cook, the kitchen was a pleasure to work in and stocked with any device one could possibly want. Location, view, view, amenities, music, food, wine refrigerator, decanter, jacuzzi tub, fresh air, view again, several outside decks, wonderful hosts. I will definitely return on my next trip.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts and compliments. Come again please! Remember when it is terrible hot everywhere else in the summer, we are just right in Seattle!

Doug & Ava have a beautiful home that will make you feel first class. Decked out kitchen to use after your outing at Pike's Place Market. Steam shower & Jacuzzi tub to relax. Classy den to lounge around in by the fire. Beautiful views of downtown, Elliot bay, and buoy perched sea lions from the 2nd story deck. 7 minute hop over to downtown, minutes from West Seattle's California Ave with a Safeway and amazing restaurants like Ma'ono. If you're going to Seattle and plan to stay at a hotel, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG! Stay here, feel like a movie star. Doug & Ava were really nice, attentive when needed, and non-disruptive for the duration. Just please take care of their home, 'cause I when I come back I want it the way it was, which was perfect!Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
Owner response: Chris, We want you back again also! Please send a photo when you have that little baby. We really appreciate you taking the time to express your feelings on the VRBO Vacation Rental. We always hear expressions that the home and views are better than expected, but having a guest put in writing these kind words are a treasure! Thank you again!! Until next time!

Loved the home and the way the bedrooms had views of the water and city. We will have to come back in the summer months to enjoy the decks and warmer weather outside. Location couldn't have been better, close to stores, restaurants and beach. Have I mentioned the view was incredible! Glad that it was available when we were coming into town. The wireless internet was a big plus.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you Beth for taking the time to express all your compliments. It was great to meet you all and hear about your family and history in West Seattle. Looking forward to your next visit, and our prayers are with your Mom for better health!

We rented Doug and Lorna's home the first week in December with another couple. Doug and Lorna's home was remodeled in the not too distant past and they did a wonderful job in taking a beautiful older historic home and making it modern without loosing its original appeal. They have all of the modern conveniences and amenities which made our visit comfortable. The one thing that we really enjoyed but did not have the opportunity to enjoy as much was the deck with GREAT views of the Seattle skyline...it was just a little too cold to be outside for very long. We would reccommend this property to our friends and family and would of course rent again from the Ava's if we ever returned to Seattle.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Paul, Thank you for your kind comments. Yes you must come again and have warmer weather for the decks. Email me when you think you can visit our "vacation home" again. Bye for now.

My wife and I had a wonderful time in this lovely home. The views are simply spectacular. Nice quiet neighborhood and just a short drive to the lovely Alki beaches and water taxi to city. Great restaurants and amenities without even going into the city No issues at all regarding cleanliness, neighbors, accessability, etc. Everything that was promised was delivered!! Lana and Doug, the owners, were pleasant and helpful, but respected our privacy. I would LOVE to rent this property again sometime!! Thanks again!!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Greg, thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your visit. We are so glad Seattle and our vacation home is a great memory for you. Please come again!

We really enjoyed our family stay in this one of a kind Alki Beach Home. It was all that we needed to be comfortable for the whole week, with brand new grand baby in tow. There was room for us to enjoy dinner together, sit and play games, and enough space to find our own little get a way from it all. We especially enjoyed the spectacular views at night as we were drifting off to sleep. With the dreary weather we were quite content in our cozy and comfortably furnished surroundings. When we had questions, the property owner was readily available. Thanks.Recommended for: Girls getaway.

About the owner: Doug and I have been married for 37 years. Doug was born in West Seattle, I in Denver. We met in Nashville TN. We came for a vacation and that was it, I had to move here. I truly believe Seattle is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. And, West Seattle surrounded by water, and views of the mountains, what can I say. My background in interior design for 18 years, allowed me to refurbish and remodel this 1911 Craftsman home with true integrity, yet elegance. We now live across the street in a smaller home and have made this the 'Vacation Home', and have met delightful people who have loved the home as we do. Come visit us, and maybe you will have to move here too! If you do, we will take care of that too, as we are Coldwell Banker Real Estate Agents (15 years) Yes, can you believe we work together, live together, and are still married. Negotiating specialist! We look forward to meeting you for your next vacation!
Why the Owner Chose West Seattle:
We never get tired of the wonderful water views of West Seattle, the convenience of being cose to sites of downtown, airport, our Alki Beach, yet living in a quiet neighborhood.. The sparkling night lights seen across the water in the evening is unsurpassed in beauty.
Because we are 7 minutes from downtown and minutes from all major highways, West Seattle is a great convenient place for your base stay. Why pay $35 a night to park downtown when you can look at downtown across the water yet be there in minutes!
You must try the West Seattle Water Taxi (below home) to downtown and sport stadiums, it is a fabulous savings over parking fees and very relaxing!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Have your coffee on one of the three decks, watch an eagle fly overhead, hear the sea lions bark, watch the cruise ships crossing by, and plan your day’s events.
How about walking down the lane to below the home and catching the walk on ferry and go over Elliott Bay and dock downtown all for $3.50 Shop at world famous Pike Street Market over 100 years old, visit the Aquarium, Sam Art Museum, go to baseball or football games, or hop on a tour of the underground Seattle. When you come back just in time for happy hour at famous Salty's on Alki right by where you dock. What a hard day you say. Rent a Kayak, roller blade, take a dive lesson, or take of fishing with a group on Alki Beach. We are here to guide you to great restaurants and great items of interest during your stay.
