The historic Red Shutters, built in 1812, has recently been lovingly restored and is in its third summer rental season. This charming 5 bedroom, 2 bath farmhouse is located on West Side Rd. (no dirt road to contend with) on 5.3 acres of beautiful property with ocean and sunset views and a back yard with expansive rolling pasture, stone walls and old apple and pine groves. You can hear the ringing of the SW bell buoy and watch as the horses (and the occasional peacock) walk past your yard from the nearby horse farm.
There are gardens, many beautiful trees and shrubs, and several sweet outbuildings on the property: "The Candle House, "Potting Shed," "Garden House," and 2 barns. We are within walking distance to Greenway Trails, Cooneymus Beach, Rustic Rides horsebackriding farm.
The kitchen/living/dining area is airy and open with a brick chimney and woodstove located in the center. Enter the kitchen from the back deck, pass the mudroom and the ample pantry, walk into the living area and step down through the french doors to the sunroom with southern light. There are 3 bedrooms off the living room including the master bedroom with bath and 2 bedrooms upstairs. The other full bath is on the 1st floor off the sunroom.
Wide plank maple floors and some painted wood floors. Kitchen: granite countertops and new appliances. You can see the ocean from most of the first floor rooms and bedrooms as well as from the front yard and the 2nd floor of house. Deck with furniture, outside shower, propane grill in back yard. Old fashioned charm with new bathroom and kitchen. Piano in dining/living room. This is one of Block Island's historic landmark properties.

Why the Owner Chose Block Island
We love the quiet and the sunsets on the West Side of Block Island where we have lived for 10 years. We recently bought The Red Shutters (also on the West Side) which is renowned for its charm and its history. We knew the prior residents who owned the property for the last 50 years and who were avid gardeners and opened their hearts and home to the residents and visitors of the Island. We have heard countless stories of people's sweet memories of visiting the Red Shutters for gardening tips, honey, candles, and camaraderie. We hope to continue the tradition.
The Unique Benefits at this House
The back deck is private and quiet with open views of rolling pasture. There are mature rhododendron bushes, forsythia, smoke bush, pussy willow, holly bushes, large swaying pines and old apple trees, maple and birch trees, and deciduous conifers. We are looking forward to seeing the many iris, lilies, and daffodils bloom and to restoring the old veggie garden. We love the outbuildings which include the Garden House, the Potting Shed, the Candle House and the 2 barns. We also like not having to ride a dusty and rutted dirt road to get home--we are right on West Side Rd. at the corner of Old Mill Rd. We like walking the Greenway Trails which are right next to our property and we like the 20 minute walk to Cooneymus Beach for sunset and beachcombing strolls. We also love to watch the horses go by from nearby Rustic Rides Farm. Also very exotic are the peacocks that sometimes pass by the property and roost in the pine grove.
Owner's Map of Block Island
Eileen and Steve Miller and their 10 year old son, Andre, have lived year round on Block Island for 12 years. Steve is a contractor in the winter and a charter boat captain in the summer. He loved restoring the farmhouse and its outbuildings, preserving their unique character. Eileen is an artist, teacher, and healer who sells her oil paintings at the Farmer's Market and leads painting workshops. Steve and Eileen keep busy and creative in the off-season with weekly practices with their a cappella singing friends and by performing regularly with the African drumming group, The Block Island Drummers.

Dream Come True!

Staying at the Red Shutters was a dream come true for us. There were 10 people in our group, 3 of whom were small children. Not only was the house kid-friendly, but the children (and the adults) were positively enchanted by the peacocks that frequently stroll through the yard and the horses that trot past the house. The photos posted here look exactly like the house itself, although you need to be there and experience the layout and the gorgeous yard to fully experience its charm. The house is well maintained and has a great kitchen for making big dinners with a group, and the on-site laundry is a plus. Eileen and Steve were very helpful in making us feel at home. Eileen even came by to show us a hammock hanging in the yard. We would definitely recommend bringing a car if you are able to. It costs less than parking on the mainland for the week, and while it is a short drive to most attractions from the house, it might be a bit too long of a walk for some. Driving on the island is easy, and it doesn't take long to figure out how to get to most places. We enjoyed visiting Mohegan Bluffs (a better beach for adults, as the walk includes a steep staircase and the waves can be rough) and Town Beach (excellent for the kids and adults alike). Renting a bicycle was an enjoyable way to get around and see most of the perimeter of the island (if you are athletically inclined). We loved our stay on Block Island at the Red Shutters, and we plan to return every year. We hope that our children come to think of it as their "home away from home."

We enjoyed our weeklong stay at the Red Shutters. The house is in the southwest portion of the island, which makes for a quiet, easygoing pace and offering beautiful starry night skies. The house is nice mix of old and new, with a brand new kitchen and bathroom, but with many original details throughout. The kitchen is very conveniently located near the deck, making outdoor entertaining easy. The owners are unobtrusive, but close enough to help out with any problems you may have. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone else looking for a mid-to-large rental for a good price.

Very cool house home which was clean and homey. Nearly 200 years old but due to the renovations it was still comfortable. The sights and scenes are truly unique and the owners were extremely helpful and kind. Our 2 children especially liked the rope swing from the tree as well as the peacocks that were wandering around the property from time to time. Eileen is an excellent artist too and we even purchased one of her paintings for our house. This home allows you to relax in comfort because you are just far away enough from the downtown bustle but still close enough to take a taxi or a quick ride to.

Hi Eileen and Steve, We loved our week at your Red Shutter House on Block Island, You and Steve were great hosts. The accommodations were perfect. A large open Kitchen, Living Room and adjoining Sun Room allowed the family to get together in the evenings, all ten of us. However the three downstairs and two second level bedroom along with the two first floor bath rooms provided plenty of privacy. And that outside shower was really a great idea for getting the sand off all our grandchildren. The kids and grandkids all loved their stay and are already asking if we have plans to come back next year. It was great to see baby deer and peacocks and the rooming roasters coming right up to the back porch. Since they were friendly and docile, the grandkids just loved them. The country side views were fantastic. The grounds surroundings the Red Shutters offered a quiet and reserved setting yet we were only a short drive to great beaches, dining, dancing and lots of shopping. Block Island's evening breezes did cool off the unusual July hot streak which struck all of the North Eastern coast. You and Steve went far out of your way to make us feel at home and to help us really enjoy our stay. I can not say enough about how much we all enjoyed your beautiful Red Shutter home. Many thanks for allowing us to enjoy your cottage. Carol and Larry Mercugliano and Family
