Ogunquit house description

The coast of Maine is known for its turn-of-the-century shingle-style summer homes and Rock Crest is one of them.

Built in 1894, this wonderful old house has been owned by one family since 1926. It is located in Ogunquit's most desirable residential area on an acre of landscaped grounds with lawns, flower beds, apple trees and tall pines. The house retains the charm and character of its era but has been updated through the years for the comfort and convenience of those who stay there.

Rock Crest has four bedrooms, three and a half baths (one with a claw-footed tub), and a comfortable sofa-bed (single) in the library. The house can sleep up to ten people. There is a contemporary, fully-equipped kitchen with an eating area that seats eight, a butler's pantry with sink and bar area, a large dining room with a table that can seat ten (or more with leaf extensions), and a spacious living room. The library is well-stocked with books and has cable TV and a DVD player. A bedroom and bath open off the library. This bedroom has twin beds which have been converted into one king size bed.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. One bedroom has a queen-sized bed and a twin bed. The second bedroom has a double bed and a twin bed. The third bedroom has an Empire style single bed.

There is a large outdoor deck furnished with tables and chairs for summer gatherings or to simply enjoy the summer breeze.

Parking is never a problem as the grounds can easily accommodate several vehicles.

Rock Crest is ideally located. It is just a five minute walk away from Ogunquit's famous Marginal Way and the Little Beach, and a scenic stroll to almost anywhere you might want to go in Ogunquit -- the Village, the Big Beach, Perkins Cove, the Barn Gallery, or Ogunquit Museum of Art.

We believe you'll find that staying at Rock Crest is an experience in itself which will add another dimension to your holiday in Ogunquit, 'Beautiful Place By The Sea.'

I have had the pleasure of spending a lovely weekend at Rockcrest, which is a quick walk to the Marginal Way path between Ogunquit and Perkins Cove. The house has old fashioned elegance and loads of charm. Rockcrest provides a comfortable place to kick back and escape. It would be a fabulous family reunion destination. I have made many summer day trips to Ogunquit Maine to walk the Marginal Way, a mile-long walk along the coast between Ogunquit and Perkins Cove. We have explored tide pools and stopped at a sandy cove for swimming and sand castles. We usually start at Perkins Cove for clam chowder and a lobster rolls and end up at Ogunquit for ice cream. Rockcrest offers a great way to enjoy the southern Maine coast. I can recommend Spring, Summer and Fall. Skiers may enjoy Winter activities as well.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

I've had the pleasure of staying at Rockcrest several times, always in the Fall to see the leaves turn. First of all, the location is perfect. Not only is it an easy drive from Boston, but there are so many things to see within walking distance, including Perkin's Cove, downtown Ogunquit, Big Beach and the picturesque Marginal Way path. The house itself is lovely. It provides privacy from neighbors, and gives you a feeling of stepping back into a gracious and earlier time. The bedrooms are lovely, spacious and comfortable; the kitchen has modern conveniences and there is a washer and dryer. The property manager has always been available to help answer questions or resolve any issues, the only so far being locking ourselves out of the house! We love Rockcrest and look forward to staying again.

Many friends and family and I have repeatedly stayed here for maybe 30 years. A charming house, beautifully appointed. Gardens are lovely, backyard ideal for croquet or badminton. Porch is The Place for cocktails. The Marginal Way and Little Beaches are a five minute stroll down the hill, Perkins Cove or downtown an easy 20 minute stroll by the sea or via quiet residential streets. If you want a comfortable, family home that has been well-cared-for, with lots of wood panelling, antiques, and atmosphere, this is your place. Rockcrest is special and it will help to make your holiday one to remember fondly.

          Year Purchased: 1926

About: In 1926, a Tulane University professor and his wife, seeking relief from the heat and humidity of New Orleans summers, purchased Rockcrest. The house stood tall on a rocky ledge looking down on a field of low wild vegetation and granite boulders. It was known in the village as 'The Scarecrow.' All this soon changed. The house was transformed, furniture was brought from New Orleans (much of it remains in the house today), the field became a lovely garden with lilacs and apple trees, lawns and flower beds and guests were welcomed all summer long. Guestbooks dating back to the 1920s tell you in prose and poetry of the pleasure guests (children as well as grown-ups) took in the hospitable house and its gardens, the rocky coast, the vast Atlantic and its beaches, the drama of the surf, the clarity of the air and the cool sea breezes. Four generations of our family have enjoyed the house, the gardens and Ogunquit's scenic treasures and limitless activities. Through the years, Rockcrest has been cared for and cherished. There have been many 'updates,' improvements and renovations in order to keep the house in step with the times in terms of comfort and convenience. Rental monies we receive go into a trust fund which pays for maintenance and other expenses. Rockcrest is not a business; it is a home.
