About Bill Shields

We are Floridians and Georgians that fell in love with the serenity of the mountains and Lake Nantahala - its an undiscovered gem - beautiful and peaceful.

Bill Shields purchased this house in 2003

Why Bill Shields chose Smoky Mountains

The location is unique, high elevation , clear clean lake, national forests surrounds half the lake, not a lot of boat traffic, close to whitewater rafting and hiking areas. There are very few pest bugs at this elevation. It is always 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta!

What makes this house unique

Lakefront with private boat dock. Use of canoe.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great spot on the lake.

  • 5 of 5

This was a great house in a great spot on the lake. We had 7 adults and 7 kids and could accommodate all. Lots of bonus open space in the ground floor of the house. The only caution that I would throw out there is that there are a LOT (about 75) of stair steps from the house to the dock, so if you have walking issues, this would be a problem.

Great family time!

  • 4 of 5

Lake was beautiful! House was great! Wish there had been a few less steps down to the dock-- but it made it a challenge. Driveway and road to the house was very steep and narrow; but we were in the mountains. Wish the ice maker had worked. Would I do it again? Absolutely! You do want to rent boats / jet skis ahead of visit. Steve, at Lakes End Marina is GREAT and very helpful.

Lake Life

  • 2 of 5

House was decorated nice, clean. The house had an ant problem within the kitchen. You could not prepare food on the counters without keeping an eye out for ants. No ant spray to be found. We left 2 days prior due to the air conditioning not working properly. My children slept on the couch downstairs. If you want to barbecue here, no propane so bring charcoal. That might be a regulatory issue, but would be nice to know that in advance. No cell service either unless you go into town which is 35 minutes. Owner provides minimal service for a price. If you have a larger group staying, be prepared for that. I have four children, we used no service while in the house. Keep in mind this is in the mountains. Those not good with heights or stairs might want to be prepared for many stairs to get to the lake. Roads are extremely narrow, would suggest coming in the daytime. The lake was beautiful, clean. House is not equipped with rafts or floats, I brought my own. House has a canoe, had an inflatable raft tied to the dock that was very low on air, obviously the children aren't using that. There is a ping pong table downstairs for the children to use. You can rent a boat, paddle boards etc a few miles up from the house.

Owner's Response: I am surprised at this review because I never heard any word from this tenant. I know they came all the way from NY and probably have never experienced mountain life. Yes it is not suburbia, you are in the woods and the nearest town is 30 minutes away. That is why most people come here. There is no cell service and internet and TV is via satellite. I do have bug spray under the sink (1 gallon) and the float she mentions was left by a previous tenant. I heard it was there but did not see it personally until after they left. We cannot provide propane grill because there is no place close by to replace it. All this is mentioned in my lease and subsequent instructions.

Beautiful property. Lovely views!

  • 5 of 5

We did have trouble with the a/c compressor getting iced up resulting in warm temps especially in upstairs bed rooms for a couple of nights. The house book of information needs to be updated. And the refrigerator leaked water continuously. We did shut the water off to the fridge to stop that. We did try to call owner on 3 different occasions and left at least two messages.

That all being said we loved the place and would like to rent again sometime. Houses have issues sometimes but nothing was too rough to handle. Thanks for your hospitality.

Pleasantly Surprised!

  • 5 of 5

The house was wonderfully spacious and well equipped for our group of 12 people. There were plenty of beds and private spaces for us to have our own little heaven. The finished basement was a welcomed surprise and provided two televisions during bad weather. The cove was wonderful and peaceful. Every morning we could see the midst rising from the mountains. Just across the lake via kayaks, or the canoe provided by the home, was a hidden waterfall that was so peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this home and on the lake!
