2/10 Terrible

Disliked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy
False advertising- Didn't even feel safe to stay
I thought VRBO had home owner rentals. 15 Spittal Street in Edinburgh turned out to be part of a chain run by MyStayInn. They made me guarantee an additional damage deposit as well as pay in advance. When I got to the location, not only was it not "immaculate" or generous in amenities, without the claimed castle view, it was not in good repair. There were holes in the walls, loose wires, missing doorknob, damaged bathroom subfloor (spongy to step on). The rental did not match the glowing description or pictures. Maybe photo shop had made the place look better. As an American, I forgot that 3rd floor was like our 4th floor. There was no elevator, but steep narrow curved flights of steps that were littered and not well lit. The "Quad" rental had a key to the overall unit and another key to the bedroom- but the locks didn’t have a deadbolt. Realizing that other occupants had necessitated demanding a damage deposit, I did not feel safe to stay there. Especially as a woman in her 70s. The unit might pass as something like a student hostel but was not appropriately listed with VRBO. The $200 a night charge was vastly inflated - it was not up to the standards of other, more comfortable and even luxurious listings. I was ripped off, am fighting to get a refund and still very upset. I should have been suspicious that only 1 review was listed, claiming the place rated 5 stars. It must have been a plant, and other negative more realistic reviews must have been deleted.
