About the property

Explorer's Rest - Tranquil 1bdrm/1bath n rainforest, very comfortable & relaxing

Read our reviews! Our guests love our cozy cottage. Located in the heart of Volcano Village and only 5 minutes from the Park, our unique tranquil rainforest cottage, named Explorer's Rest, is a sunny, orchid-filled 1 bedroom/1 bath with its original hardwood floors, perfect for solo travelers or couples. It reminds you of a simpler time while having all the amenities for a relaxing stay. "Perfect", "Lovely", and a "Real Gem" is how many of our guests describe our wonderful cottage. Please read our reviews! We are one of the top rated VRBO vacation rentals in the Volcano area.

The comfortable living room, with its gas fireplace and arm chairs, provides a romantic ambiance during chilly nights. The large, covered deck in the back, with its high roof and amazing fire table, sets the scene for discussing the day's events; or, checking your email while sipping a glass of wine and listening to native birds. The bedroom has a queen bed with luxury all cotton high thread count bedding and thick cotton robes in the closet. The study includes a built-in desk, free Wifi, USB ports, books, a comfy futon sofa and Shoji screen doors which provide privacy between the living room and study as needed. The study is a brilliant place if you have to work during your holiday. The bathroom is a shower/ tub combo with complimentary shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion. The charming old fashioned kitchen is fully equipped and includes a coffee press, Bialetti expresso maker, electric kettle, blender, rice cooker, freshly ground coffee and local teas. There is a soft-sided cooler with ice packs in the freezer for your use too. There is a front-loading washer and dryer on-site for stays of three nights or more.

Apapane and Kalij pheasant can often be spotted in the yard and we are lucky enough to be in the territory of a Hawaiian thrush, known as an O'mao. You can hear his police whistle-like call, whenever he is nearby. Common mynas, little zebra doves and ring-necked doves wattle around the yard. Hawaiian hawks (I'o) are frequently seen flying above the tree tops or sunning themselves on a branch.

Our cottage attracts quite a few honeymooners, and we love it! We try hard to make your stay special. The place is also available for snowbirds looking for a comfortable home for longer stays. We aim to give an outstanding experience, and from our reviews, we do! Again, please read our reviews!

Our lovely front garden is full of exotic orchids, colorful anthuriums, tree ferns, and a killer Japanese Maple.

NOTE: We are not affiliated in any way with a new vacation rental called Explorer's Bungalow.

Tours and Surprises!

We offer private astronomy tours to Mauna Kea! Only $175 for two guests. Ted is an astronomy geek and everyone is amazed by his knowledge and loves his tours. A commercial tour usually costs over $200/pp. Contact us for more details!

We may have reduced rates for stays of one month or more, please make an inquiry for the most up-to-date rates!

Explorer's Rest is a brilliant place for writers; or, those who need to work during their holiday. See photos of the study. The cottage is only 5 minutes away from the entrance to the famous World Heritage Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (now closed), local restaurants (yum), grocery stores, arts and crafts venues (wow), lava tube caves (cool) and the famous Volcano Sunday morning market (scrumptious).

Anuhea Circle Drive, where the cottage is located, is a tranquil street. It's fun to stroll around and see how we live up here at the 3,600ft level in all the green on the side of Kilauea Volcano. However, what is most excellent is just sitting on our deck and listening to all the morning bird song! Our area is a very safe place to stay and visit during the Kilauea eruption event.

We look forward to helping make your vacation experience up here in Volcano a special one! We look forward to meeting you!

About Ted

Aloha! Ted and I have lived on the Big Island for nearly 18 years & in Hawaii for about 30 years.

Ted is a high school science teacher in a rural school here. He is also an avid amateur astronomer & geologist. He is a penguin person & many of our vacations center around viewing penguins in the wild. He has a private pilot's license & is crazy about impact craters, tall mountains & Antarctica (he has visited there twice!). He is former Peace Corps Nepal, where he worked for 4 years and did a lot of climbing. He is fluent in Spanish, Nepalese & English. He reads Sanskrit. Ted is also a HAM radio operator.

I am an international nature conservation & ecotourism expert. My focus is on World Heritage parks & Global Geoparks. I often work with indigenous peoples in remote locations to help them make money while protecting their natural resources. I have worked in such cool locations as Sarawak, Borneo; the Australian outback; Palau; Bali, Thailand, the Bahamas & the Marshall Islands. I was once a USFWS Park Ranger on Midway Atoll for more than a year. Albatross galore! I am now a member of the IUCN Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group & on the board of Recycle Hawaii. I love hiking, kayaking, & am a PADI Dive Master and HAM. I am a huge Dr. Who & Game Of Thrones fan! I also speak German reasonably well & basic Spanish but am pretty rusty in my Thai language skills.

Both Ted and I love to read, garden & travel. We enjoy birding & observing wildlife. We have been all over the world including Europe, South America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia & the Pacific - with our most recent favorite places being Cusco, Meteora, London & the bottom of the Grand Canyon! The photo is of us on the train to Machu Picchu in the summer of 2017.

We also love critters & have two dogs; and, two cats I brought back from my 3 year stint in Borneo.

We take pride in making your experience with us special! Please read our reviews!

Ted purchased this cottage in 2017

Why Ted chose Volcano Village

This property reminded us of many of the cottages and cabins we used when we were on family trips way back when. We walked in and felt right at home with all the windows, the dark wood floors and the rustic styled kitchen with a white porcelain sink. The house was just the right for two people on holiday. The tall trees captured my heart as did the huge ornamental cherry tree in the back. And, we knew the neighbors, what a bonus! We hope you like it as much as we do!

What makes this cottage unique

Sleeping in late

Listening to the birds in the morning

Sipping your morning cuppa made from our fresh ground coffee

Hot, hot showers

Admiring all the orchids inside the cottage and in the yard

Reading with the fire table on

Wondering if you might see a wild pig on the road! (We have!!)

Sunning yourself on the front lawn

Peace and privacy

Walking to the Volcano morning market on a Sunday morning

Enjoying the 5 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Being in Volcano Hawaii!!! O'yeah!

Beautiful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Ted and Lisa’s cottage is beautiful in a rain forest. It is decorated with lots of orchids and personal touches. It has everything you need that you just feel like home. We visited a few parks close by Hilo. The rainbow fall was beautiful. It was fun to visit the Sunday’s farmers market where you can get breakfast, fruit, vegetables, crafts, and fun to see the community. Ted and Lisa are so attentive, they made sure we arrived safely and had a pleasant stay. They are very friendly and fun to talk to. If you are heading to Volcano village, this is a place that you will enjoy! Thank you Ted and Lisa again!!

Perfect spot around the Volcano

  • 5 of 5

Well designed and tended to house made for a wonderful visit. Volcano closed the park but there is still a lot to experience. The location is minutes away from everything but feels like you are in a quiet fern jungle. The owners were very welcoming. The back deck was a great spot to relax around the fire and listen to the night music. The number of orchids around the house is amazing. Loved the place!

Owner's Response: Dear Dale and Charles, We really appreciate your adventuresome spirit and your ability to embrace this unique situation! So many folks think there is nothing to do in Volcano because the Park is closed, but it is just not the case. Still plenty to do! We are so glad you had a great stay with us! We try really hard to make every stay a good one....we hope you two will return soon! But until then, safe travels! Lisa & Ted

A small piece of paradise near a volcano

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cottage is in the middle of the rain forest and conveniently located (2 miles) from the national park entrance. Cottage is perfect for a couple or small family. Lisa has filled the cottage with many orchard plants that are thriving. Accommodations are extremely comfortable. Fire pit on the covered lanai is an added plus. Would definitely stay here again on a return visit.

Cottage with full kitchen in a fern forest.

  • 5 of 5

A cottage in a beautiful fern forest, minutes form Volcano National Park. Bring or purchase rain gear as it is likely to rain enhancing the natural beauty. Basic services, cafes minutes away. Hosts made reservations for us at the Rim Restaurant, inside the nat'l park, overlooking the active caldera --Highly recommend that. Good location to fully experience the active-volcano park. Recommend Jagger Museum lookout for best view of caldera. Our hosts have outfitted the cottage with EVERYTHING you need to enjoy your stay, and make your own meals.

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed the views of the tree ferns from our windows and back deck. They look even more lovely when it is raining and you are watching everything with the fire table in front of you...Happy you were able to find everything you needed in the kitchen! We try hard to think of the little things that help make a stay with us a bit special! We are sorry it rained so hard while you were visiting but boy is the lava lake up in the Park spectacular right now - it is a once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience, and you were here for it! Yeah... Safe journeys to you both! Ted & Lisa

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Celebrating our anniversary, we enjoyed our stay at Explorers Rest and were very lucky to see activity at the Volcano. The linens on the bed are very comfortable and the owners left us a chilled bottle of champagne to celebrate (Thanks again!). We particularly enjoyed the outdoor area. Due to the rain, we spend quite a bit of time on the back deck by the fire pit. Ted and Lisa have thought of everything to make the stay comfortable and Ted was able to get us a window table at the Rim restaurant for our celebration dinner. There is no TV, but internet is available. I would recommend this rental to anyone looking for a few days on the East Coast of the BI. Thanks Ted and Lisa!

Aloha! Volcano Village is a quiet community, full of trees and flowers. Often I see I'o, our native hawk, in the area either perched or flying across an open space. Apapane and Kalej pheasant (non-native) are also common. We have Kazamura Lava tube nearby, the longest known lava tube in the world. Vireyas, orchids, tree ferns and the flowering Ohia are plentiful. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - with all its trails, the famous Volcano Art Center and Volcano Rim Restaurant - is only 6 minutes away from our cottage. Punuluu Black Sand Turtle Beach is 25 minutes away. The town of Hilo is about 30 minutes downhill from Volcano Village. So what are our must-do activities? Kazumura Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki trail, a visit to Volcano Garden Arts, Akatsuka Orchid Garden, visiting the Park, searching for Nene (our endangered goose) and walking up a piece of Mauna Loa Strip road (starting at the cattle guard - gorgeous!)
