Explorer's Rest - a peaceful 1 bdrm/1 bath w/fire table, covered deck & orchids

Located in the heart of Volcano Village and only 5 minutes from the Park, our unique tranquil rainforest cottage, named Explorer's Rest, is a sunny 1 bedroom/1 bath with its original hardwood floors, perfect for solo travelers or couples. It reminds you of a simpler time while having all the amenities for a relaxing stay. The comfortable living room, with its gas fireplace and arm chairs, provides a romantic ambiance during chilly nights. The large, covered deck in the back, with its high roof and amazing fire table, sets the scene for discussing the day's events; or, checking your email while sipping a glass of wine and listening to native bird song. The bedroom has luxury all cotton high thread count bedding and thick cotton robes in the closet. The study includes a built-in desk, free Wifi, books, a comfy futon sofa and Shoji screen doors that provide privacy between the living room and study as needed. The study is a brilliant place if you have to work during your holiday. The bathroom is a shower/ tub combo with complimentary toiletries. The charming old fashioned kitchen is fully equipped and includes a coffee press, Bialetti expresso maker, electric kettle, blender, rice cooker, freshly ground coffee and local teas. There is also a front-loading washer and dryer on-site and available if you have booked at least a three night stay. Our cottage is available for snowbirds looking for comfortable lodging for longer stays.

Our lovely front garden is full of exotic orchids, colorful anthuriums, tree ferns, and a killer Japanese Maple. Kalij pheasants and apapane can often be spotted in the yard and we are lucky enough to be in the territory of a Hawaiian thrush, known as an Omao. You can hear this bird call, with his police whistle-like voice, whenever he is around.

About Ted

Aloha! Ted and I have lived on the Big Island for nearly 17 years & in Hawaii for about 30 years.

Ted is a high school science teacher. He is also an avid amateur astronomer & geologist. He is a penguin person & many of our vacations center around viewing penguins in the wild. He has a private pilot's license & is crazy about impact craters, tall mountains & Antarctica (he has visited there twice!). He is former Peace Corps Nepal, where he worked for 4 years. He is fluent in Spanish, Nepalese & English. Ted is also a HAM radio operator.

I am an international nature conservation & ecotourism expert. My focus is on World Heritage parks & Global Geoparks. I often work with indigenous peoples in remote locations to help them make money while protecting their natural resources. I have worked in such cool locations as Sarawak, Borneo; the Australian outback; Palau; the Bahamas & the Marshall Islands. I also was once a USFWS Park Ranger on Midway Atoll. I am now a member of the IUCN Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group & on the board of Recycle Hawaii. I love hiking, kayaking, & am a Dive Master. I am a huge Dr. Who & Game Of Thrones fan! I also speak German reasonably well & basic Spanish but am pretty rusty in my Thai language skills.

Both Ted and I love to read, garden & travel. We also enjoy birding & observing wildlife. We have been all over the world including Europe, South America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia & the Pacific - with our most recent favorite places being Cusco, Meteora, London & the bottom of the Grand Canyon! The photo is of us on the train to Machu Picchu in the summer of 2017.

We also love critters & have two dogs and two cats I brought back from my 3 year stint in Borneo.

We take pride in making your experience with us special! Please read our reviews!

Ted purchased this cottage in 2017

Why Ted chose Volcano Village

This property reminded us of many of the cottages and cabins we used when we were on family trips way back when. We walked in and felt right at home with all the windows, the dark wood floors and the rustic styled kitchen with a white porcelain sink. The house was just the right for two people on holiday. The tall trees captured my heart as did the huge ornamental cherry tree in the back. And, we knew the neighbors, what a bonus! We hope you like it as much as we do!

What makes this cottage unique

Sleeping in late

Listening to the birds in the morning

Sipping your morning cuppa made from our fresh ground coffee

Hot, hot showers

Admiring all the orchids inside the cottage and in the yard

Reading with the fire table on

Wondering if you might see a wild pig on the road! (We have!!)

Sunning yourself on the front lawn

Walking to the Volcano morning market on a Sunday morning

Enjoying the 5 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Being in Volcano Hawaii!!! O'yeah!

Rainforest cottage with amazing personal touch

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky to book this place! Amazing stay, we would come again and can't recommend it more. Probably the best stay we had this year.

First, location. In the rainforest, so when you wake up you are in the midst of greenery, and birds are singing (I guess any time of the year). 5 mins drive to Volcano national park with great crater hikes.

Second, house. It's a very nice spacious 1 bedroom separate house all for guests. Everything is in great condition. Good wide bed. A sofa and an armchair. There is a patio with a fire table - awesome for breakfast or afternoon work.

And the main thing: attention from hosts. It was awesome, we felt like family members. They made sure we knew how to get there. Prepared everything in the house with attention to details. We even got a reservation in the nearby restaurant overlooking the volcano crater!

I hope to get back to Big Island and would book again. Thank you Lisa!

Great place close to the park

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we stepped into the cottage, we were in love and could have just spent the 2 days on the lanai in front of the fire pit! The cute little notes were so much fun and made us laugh. Everything was clean and comfortable with everything we could want!

Thanks so much!

Great place, 5 mins from Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant three night stay at Explorer's Rest during the third week of March. The weather was cool and rainy, but we were cozy in this cottage that seemed as comfortable as home. We had everything we needed, and the owners, Ted and Lisa were very attentive. We especially appreciated the covered back porch that allowed us to enjoy our morning coffee while watching the birds in the trees, despite the rain. And an extra bonus was the beautifully blooming orchids that Lisa had set out onto several tables and bureaus.

We would definitely stay here again. And we will remember it as one of the special places of our visit to Hawai'i.

Owner's Response: Dear Pat and Joan, We are so happy that we were able to make your stay with us special. We feel that everyone's vacation should be memorable and we do our best to try and help make it so. Orchids grow up here so well, I love to share them with our guests. It was absolutely pouring while you were here, but we are so pleased that it did not stop you from having a good time up here in the Volcano rainforest. We look forward to your return. Until then - aloha!

Quiet get-away

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage in the rainforest with plenty of space for 2-3 people. Lisa is a great hostess, always available to answer questions and provides a few special extras during our stay. I highly recommend this cottage if you want to unplug during your trip to Volcanoes National Park .

Practically perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

We would love to take this little cottage home with us to GA as it has been a perfect retreat during the volcano NP portion of our vacation. Lisa went out of her way to anticipate our needs and be helpful. Weeks before we arrived she made dinner reservations for us at the Rim and we had a window seat overlooking the volcano. As we made our way to the volcano area, Lisa sent an email suggesting we pick up snacks at the grocery before arriving volcano because of the prices and limited selections locally. The cottage had all kinds of neat surprises from fresh bread and chocolate awaiting our arrival, welcoming notes, cold beer and fresh eggs too. It is cleverly and classily appointed. Clearly the owners love this place and want to make certain the visitor feels loved too. We did! Lisa was always available with a requested recommendation. The cottage location is perfect for visiting the park and the South Point. We were so close to the park entrance and thankfully away from the traffic there. I don’t know how staying at the NP inn would be relaxing. All the creature comforts were available and it was certainly warm and cozy on cool days. We loved the fire pit on the porch. The orchids were everywhere, inside and out. I could go on and on! Honestly the owners must have spent a lot of time thinking about all the little things a traveler might desire during their stay, and then made certain those things were on hand. Perfect for a couple wanting a quiet, charming place to stay, yet convenient to the NP and local attractions. Highly recommended and will remain a special part of our vacation memories. When we return to Hawaii, we will stay certainly stay here again. We feel like we now have friends and a welcome place to call Home when visiting Hawaii. Those choosing to stay here will be richly blessed.

Aloha! Volcano Village is a quiet community, full of trees and flowers. Often I see I'o, our native hawk, in the area either perched or flying across an open space. Apapane and Kalej pheasant (non-native) are also common. We have Kazamura Lava tube nearby, the longest known lava tube in the world. Vireyas, orchids, tree ferns and the flowering Ohia are plentiful. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - with all its trails, the famous Volcano Art Center and Volcano Rim Restaurant - is only 6 minutes away from our cottage. Punuluu Black Sand Turtle Beach is 25 minutes away. The town of Hilo is about 30 minutes downhill from Volcano Village. So what are our must-do activities? Kazumura Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki trail, a visit to Volcano Garden Arts, Akatsuka Orchid Garden, visiting the Park, searching for Nene (our endangered goose) and walking up a piece of Mauna Loa Strip road (starting at the cattle guard - gorgeous!)
