Unbelievable view, which we enjoyed each morning and evening on the porch. House was great and very comfortable. Would recommend a four wheel drive vehicle to reach the top, but well worth the trip and actually a fun drive up and down. If you want to get away from everything and enjoy the mountains, this is the place to come. We would definitely recommend this place to stay.

Was a little apprehensive when booking cabin and reading 4x4 is a must. However after ascending the mountain the house and view was fantastic! My family and I had one of the most special Christmas gatherings ever. House is large and enough space for everyone.

We had an incredible stay at this home! It was immaculately clean and very comfortable, with spectacular views that we couldn’t get enough of. The drive up to the house was a little challenging the first time, but after that, it was straightforward—and the elongated drive doubles as a beautiful hike, which we loved. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time here. While we wished for a large TV in the living room and a grill on the second-floor deck, these are minor suggestions that didn’t take away from the overall experience. The location is fantastic, with easy access to great trails and close proximity to Highlands and Cashiers, which made exploring the area a breeze. Overall, the home was a wonderful retreat, and we’d definitely recommend it!

Spectacular Views

The home was very spacious and clean. We've spent a lot of time in the NC mountains and have never seen a better view. The home and its surroundings are very quiet and peaceful. The home is ideally located to be able to enjoy both Franklin and Highlands. It was also convenient to many of our favorite hiking areas in the Nantahala Forest including Standing Indian and Wayah. Brett was great to work with. His warnings about the road to the house are very accurate so pay attention to his information.

Up to date home. At or hear the top of a mountain with clear views over a beautiful valley and nearby mountains. Two zone heat and air conditioning. Comfortable bedrooms. The road leading up to the home is compact gravel. Highly recommend any 4 wheel vehicle. Owner was very accessible and eager to please. A new large supermarket is nearby as well as the town of Franklin. Very worth considering.

This was our second time within 6 months to stay in this home. It was appealing to us to return to a place where we knew what to expect -- a beautiful timber-frame house in a secluded mountain setting. The kitchen is well-stocked, the furniture is comfortable, and there is plenty of room to spread out. Even though the road is steep, we walked down and saw a couple of creeks and the mountain scenery. The walk back up was a workout, but made us feel better about all of the relaxing we had been doing! The most impressive thing about this location is the view. I can't imagine you can find a better one. We have been to Bear Paw twice and I am sure we will return.

This house was exactly what i was looking for. It was beautiful, spacious, gorgeous, and all the furniture was very comfortable. The driveway was an adventure for sure. Our family had such a special fun time in this house. We will definitely be back. Our night time entertainment were the flying squirrels and raccoon, they came out evey night. We miss it already!! Brett was always helpful if you needed anything, i would recommend anyone to stay here, it was just perfect!!! The only suggestion i would make is too have a first aid kit in the house. Thank you Brett it was perfect and will see this wonderful house next year!! We will be regulars until we buy our own house

Amazing mountain views

My husband, our daughter, son-in-law, and twin 5 yr. old grands planned this trip together. This home was all we could have asked for in all areas important to us. The most outstanding feature of the house was the view! We have traveled a good bit and can't think of any place where we stood in a home and looked out on anything so beautiful. We love to hike so all surrounding areas were easy to get to and if we did not want to leave, we walked at the house. We did the Polar Express with the children out of Bryson City and also drove to Biltmore to see it decorated for Christmas. Everything and everyone could not have been better! I will say here that we are seasoned travelers on mountain roads and "switch backs" and this was helpful in traveling to this beautiful home along with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. You know, it's all about what you want and we loved this vacation to Franklin NC! We know to plan ahead and when we come down the mountain, it is usually for the day. We loved it!

Beautiful house, terrible location!

House is lovely, view beautiful. Getting to it however is like taking your life in your hands. Website pic is gravel road but straight up. Makes you think the house is at the top of the hill. Description says steep gravel “road”. What it does not say is it is a minimum of a slow 20-25 minutes, due to multiple sharp, steep switchbacks, more like a mud and gravel path, which is narrow and fit for one vehicle only, full of deep ruts and some washed out areas. We were in a 4 WD. Can’t imagine transversing it in the dark. And the 9 miles to Highlands must be as the crow flies. It’s a good 35-40 minutes from driving down the path until you get to Highlands. Sorry to say(as the house is beautiful) we did not stay and had to book something else that evening for the rest of our trip. Did not feel safe on the drive up or down.

I viewed over 300 properties searching for 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, positive reviews, & location, for my only nephew's wedding in Whittier. This was the perfect property for three adult females. We initially had difficulty accessing it with our Buick Enclave. Thanks to Ridgecrest Towing, within 2 hrs we were winched up to the house. In order to remain at this property, we needed 4 wheel drive. I searched the surrounding areas for rental vehicles & none were available. Brett spent the entire day trying to locate a 4x4 truck, & by late afternoon, he found one in Ga! There aren't adequate words to describe our gratitude to him. The house is magnificent, gorgeous furnishings, & the views different every day. Because the home is located at the very top of the mountain, there was no traffic to interfere with the peaceful tranquility. I didn't want to go home & wished I had booked it for at least 2 weeks. We will definitely stay at this property again! Thank you Brett Schroder for being so kind and helping us to enjoy the wedding.

Mountaintop serenity

This is a truly wonderful property. Just close enough to town that you can run to the store or a restaurant, but remote enough to feel like you're miles from civilization. The home itself is lovely--nicely furnished, a well-equipped kitchen, fantastic wifi, and a huge smart TV downstairs. Easy check-in, and the lovely owners reached out in the middle of our stay just to check on us and see how things were going. Very thoughtful! But the best part of the house, hands down? That screen porch, with views for days. DAYS. We probably spent at least a couple of hours out there every single day, from watching the light come up and the fog burn off in the mornings to the dying of the light as the sun dipped behind the western mountains in the evening. Spectacular sunsets, and it was fun to watch the bats come out for their evening meal. I probably took 100+ photos from that porch in the time we were there, each one better than the last. A word about the road: please, please don't dismiss the owners' advice about having at least all-wheel drive, and ideally four-wheel drive, if you're thinking about renting here. After you leave the paved road, it's about 2.5 miles of gravel (mostly), very narrow, winding, and steep. A beautiful drive, to be sure, but not for a sedan or (heaven forbid!) low-slung sports car. We would definitely rent here again. Can't recommend it highly enough!

But the View Jerry!!

This was not perfect, but still my favorite vacation to the mountains. You start with a ascent up the mountain that makes you realize just how isolated you are (in a good way). Going in the summer, we did not have any issues with our Subaru Outback, but I can see where others may have issues with steep inclines if winter and in a 2 wheel drive. Once we got there, we noticed a couple of minor things (grill was not clean, no trash bags, an outside chair was broken, downstairs bedroom needed a little more cleaning... some dead insects in the lights)...but beyond those minor things you get overwhelmed by the view and the rest of the place. The positives of this place besides the view was having a bedroom on each floor offering some separation; the screened in porch was used often and a huge plus; the bird feeder that brought an evening of watching small bats and flying squirrels; the covered carport for unloading during rain; an open kitchen with plenty of dining area; the timely response from Brett whenever we had an issue. The negatives were that the main floor and upstairs bathroom walls were not to the ceiling, so there was little privacy when using one. There is a main floor 1/2 bath that offer privacy. There isn't anything to block access to the stairs off the deck (gate), so you have to keep an eye on small children or dogs going down the steps. There also could be a few more small plates as we went through plates quickly. The WiFi was OK, but I feel it is impossible to expect to run a ton of zoom meetings etc. from there. The first day it was slow, and then Brett made some quick calls and it was much better the rest of the trip. We would certainly stay here again! Located close to Franklin and a short drive to the Highlands. Book it!

Absolute Gem with amazing views. Will not disappoint.

You won't go wrong renting this property. Not only is the place immaculate but the view from the porch and decks are unbelievable. Host is very responsive and gives great instructions for check in/check out as well as information needed while at the property. Everything at the property is in excellent condition, comfortable and very clean. Plenty of space to hang out all together or find space for yourself. Kitchen is well appointed with everything you should need. The Wifi works perfect and you do have decent cell service while at the house. The house is way up on a ridge and extremely private. Totally peaceful, only hearing the sounds of nature. My family spent hours just sitting in the screened in porch enjoying the view and the peacefulness of the property. I would come back to this property in a heartbeat. Here is the skinny on whether you need all wheel drive/4 wheel drive. For most of the drive up to the property it is a well packed gravel road. It is the last mile that warrants the extra power. Very steep climb, tight corners and in many of the spots along the last mile it is very loose gravel and not well packed yet. So when you loose momentum, you can do some tire spinning and if the weather conditions haven't been good, such as rain or snow, you have the potential for problems. Now we had vehicles that were not all wheel or 4 wheel and made it just fine. But we had perfect weather conditions. So, in my humble opinion it is better to have a vehicle that can handle the conditions when needed than risk a problem. If you are renting a vehicle, get something that has all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive capability. Property is not real far from shopping conveniences and there is a Dollar General less than 5 miles away. If I haven't said it before, you can't go wrong with this property. It was everything we hoped for and more!!!!

A wonderful stay

We had a wonderful time during our stay. The view is amazing and the property is well cared for, clean, and really well done. Communication with the owner was great. We highly recommend for anyone looking to get away, have a good view, and still have access to Highlands and everything this area has to offer.

Mountain getaway

We reunited with family and celebrated our 29th anniversary. What a lovely place to do just that! This house lives up to its description and the fresh air and spectacular views will refresh one’s soul. It was a wonderful respite….

Snowed in mountain retreat

We had a very enjoyable vacation and due to the weather, a lot of forced family time-lol. The area surrounding the house looked to be very nice, however the weather prevented us from going down the mountain for two days. We had about a foot of snow and then some ice. As the many people have already reviewed the drive up/down the mountain having a 4wd vehicle is ideal for getting to the home. The road is narrow and there is no guard rail, as well as it serves two way traffic with only a few areas to pull over to yield to other vehicles. We were greeted by another vehicle who was kind enough to go in reverse. Closer to the host’s home, there’s really no other reason for anyone to be on the road other than guests staying at that home. The weather conditions we left the home in were less than ideal and what would normally take 8 min to get up the mountain took 27 min. As far as the home the host was responsive and informative to the questions we had since we are not from the area and had concerns about the weather/driving conditions. The home was toasty and had plenty of cookware and serving pieces. Beds were comfortable, but the fitted sheets could be a nicer quality-they had a high polyester content which made them fall off. The games need some updating, unfortunately not all the pieces were there. We left behind a new deck of cards. All and all a great vacation and the snow showed up for our kids to enjoy.

When an opportunity presented itself my wife Konnie and I decided to take that leap and purchase a vacation home in Franklin, we had been looking for numerous years and even purchased a couple mountain view parcels in Sapphire valley with the intent to build, which the Franklin, Cashiers, Sapphire and Highlands area is central to all of the fun the Smokey Mountains have to offer. A dream come true. Yay! Vacation home in place and an escape from the Florida heat and a task of mild winters an extreme departure from the frigid winters of the Midwest were i was raised! We were worried a bit, however it was for no reason as the people that have visited our home are good, hardworking and thoughtful people just as we are. Even a few celebrities have visited our Mountain Chalet :):) For that we are grateful and blessed.

Why this property? Well, this wonderful mountain top home became available and was truly more than we ever thought possible to obtain. Mountain top! New Timber Frame Construction! Million Dollar Home! All the best of construction! 47 mile view in the winter (documented) A Castle in The Sky!!! Creeks, Forest. Nature. Privacy yet not too remote. Central to everything. No hustle bustle noise with the exception of the birds and wildlife. How good does it get? Things seem to work out for a reason. . . . 'if one door shuts, another better one will open.' We truly feel that this is what happened. We chose to believe that nothing happens by coincidence and that it was all predetermined long before we arrived here ....
