Beautiful, contemporary-style bright and sunny home located on Chase Creek with western views from the spacious deck. Three of the bedrooms have westerly views of the Creek, one has a deck overlooking the Creek. The fourth bedroom is a reader's paradise, filled with books (many from the former owner, Leon Uris) and an eastern skylight. The gunite pool can be heated, if necessary, and there is a fun slide and new outdoor shower with hot and cold running water. The house is walking distance to the Shelter Island Heights business district and historic area, and the North Ferry for a day trip to Greenport.
This home offers a tranquil retreat just a ferry ride away from the fast-paced life across the Bay. Enjoy the two covered outdoor dining areas for breakfast, lunch and dinner watching the wildlife on the Creek and the sunsets on the lower deck. There is also a private dock - bring your own kayak and row from Chase Creek to the Peconic Bay. The pool is surrounded by a large deck which is a flight of stairs up from the house and fully enclosed for the safety of young children. The pool deck has a covered gazebo, table and chairs for dining, a hammock and lounge chairs to relax and enjoy the sun.
Even in the 'off-season,' this home and the surrounding area offer opportunities for fun and relaxation. Curl up in the living room in front of the wood stove and enjoy reading from the extensive Leon Uris library -- yes, this was the home of Leon Uris and he wrote several of his novels here. You can also watch a movie on the DVD or listen to music. Shelter Island is a perfect place to visit in any season.
A men's fashion designer and his wife, both of whom are passionate about collecting posters and unique objects, enjoy the house year-round.
Lois Kramer-Metraux purchased this house in 1995
Shelter Island is an understated treasure away from the Hamptons. This house is unique in that its location allows you to walk to get your morning coffee and croissant at the popular Marie Eiffel's restaurant, shop at Bliss Department Store or have a drink and/or dinner at The Dory.
You can walk to the North Ferry for a day trip to Greenport or walk through the historic district of Shelter Island Heights to admire the unique and charming architecture. The newly renovated Chequit is also within walking distance for a drink on the umbrella-covered deck or dinner.
My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing, stress free week at Shelter Island!
The house was comfortable, well equipped and beautifully located. The view from the master bedroom balcony was at times breathtaking during sunset.
The large deck was our refuge and main dining area. I really can't say enough positive things about our experience there! Thank you so very much Lois!
We had a lovely time in this very convenient home. Lois met us on arrival on Monday afternoon and returned the following Monday to wish us well on our return to California. Because the house is on several levels, it was a great choice for those who wished to rise early (we saw the swans out on the creek) and for those who wished to "sleep-in". The pool was wonderful and enjoyed by all. The creek was fun for tubing and paddle-boating. Part of our family stayed in this house and part of the extended family had another vrbo house a couple of miles away. One evening we had dinner for 24 out on deck and up by the pool, and there were dishes and silverware for all. Weather was lovely all week. The rehearsal dinner was at the Yacht club, the wedding was in garden at Sylvester Manor with dinner in a large "circus" tent in the meadow near Gardiner Creek, and the brunch on Sunday after the wedding was served from "Rolling in Dough" food truck (lots of fun with great pizza). My granddaughter was a beautiful bride and we all had a wonderful time. I would recommend this house for a big family gathering or for a small retreat time. We did not have time to read any of Leon Uris' books, but I had read several of them previously. The owners have very eclectic taste and some great posters. So glad I found this property.
I have to start off this review by saying how lucky we felt that these owners actually open up their home to renters. It is almost hard to believe that all these things could exist in a rental house. 4 spacious bedrooms, 3.5 baths, incredible views from every room in the house, a private dock on chase creek where we were greeted every morning with Blue Herin and White Cranes and even an entire family of swans. An amazing pool situated with an incredible amount of comfy chairs, 2 vine covered pergolas just begging you to sit underneath them in their hammock with a glass of wine and a good book. We walked in and had to pinch ourselves that this was our playground for a week. We woke up every morning and had coffee on the beautiful deck overlooking the creek, we spent our days swimming and paddle boating, we forced ourselves to leave the house, but couldn't wait to get back after each trip. Everything you could need is walking distance too, which was a big plus with having kids and teenagers. My one regret was not booking two weeks, one week wasn't enough time in this gem of a house. The owners were wonderful and we hope to come back as soon as we can. It was the perfect vacation!
This was the second time we rented this house; first time prime summer and this time for a fall weekend get away. It was great and we're planning another summer week this year. The house has everything you need. We have cooked big meals with friends and enjoyed lovely evenings listening to music on the deck from the bar in the village. The pool is wonderful and Shelter Island has lots to offer in terms of outdoor activities. While it's not a "party island", but all I can say if my college kids are voting for this house again!
I have rented this house a couple of times now. We love everything about the house and the owners. The owners go out of their way to make sure everything is perfect. I would always go back to this house without hesitation. My friends and I consider the time spent here the best vacations we've ever had. It really upset me to read that nasty review. As far as I am concerned there could be nothing farther from the truth!!
We vacationed here in late June 2011 and had a WONDERFUL stay. The six kids in a two-family stay were delighted at every turn. The parents (at once three couples) enjoyed the seemingly endless choices of places to relax and entertain at the house. Where to have lunch? By the pool? Under the cabana? How about dinner? The dining room table inside (seats 10!) or beneath another shade cabana creekside on the lower deck? Oh, the choices! The kids loved the pool and the parents loved the lounge chairs.
But what about OUTSIDE the house? A short walk to admire the yachts in Dering Harbor; a pocket park that is harbor and creekside; the Pharmacy in Shelter Island heights is only a few blocks away; a toy store even closer, and a wine shop even closer than that. The North Ferry can be walked to, or a short drive, that then gives you access to Greenport, the carousel, and, for us, a newly discovered Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (that was awesome).
Back at the house kids and adults have three levels on which to relax, read, doze or whatever you want to do after exploring the beaches, parks, nature trails, or waterways of Shelter Island.
Are you a reader? In this house you will find lots of books left by the owners, especially those by iconic American author Leon Uris, who, according to the owners, literally left the books behind. He penned some works of fiction in this house, so for anyone fascinated by his work or that like it, will find any length of stay in this house a bit interesting.
Crescent Beach can be reached by bicycle and is the closest to the house. Some bikes are available at the house but a town bike rental shop is about a block away. All beaches on SI are a short drive away. A great house! The toughest decisions at the end of a day are where to park yourself with a glass of (North Fork!) wine and a good book. We'll definitely be back.
Close to the many vineyards of Long Island, a short drive to the Hamptons and Sag Harbor. Shelter Island is easy to access from the Orient Point Ferry (from New London, CT) and also close to Montauk and the Atlantic Ocean. The Tanger Mall outlets are a short drive to Riverhead and you can stop at several of the many vineyards on your way back! Greenport is just across the Bay on the North Ferry and is also a great day excursion with unique shopping experiences, great restaurants and a very popular carousel. You can easily walk to the North Ferry from the house, as well as walk to the village of Shelter Island Heights, the newly renovated Chequit Hotel and the historical Shelter Island Heights area with its unique and charming architecture.
