About this property

Mush Room at SunRay Shire

Welcome to the SunRay Shire home of SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard. We are natural builders and our homes have appeared on MTV Cribs, Home and Garden Channel, in New York Times and Lloyd Kahn’s books Builders of the Pacific Cost and Tiny Homes.
We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants.
This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures.
The Stump House ID#1541586 and Mush Room ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond. Each cabin has electricity, cold water sink, tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater November through April. The cabins each have a comfortable double bed. The Stump additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accomodate a child or third guest. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy.
Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail.
We are blessed to live in the forest on Cultus Mountain in North Western Washington. The trees, mountains, clean water, earth and air nourish us body and soul. Come breathe, relax and walk in the beauty of nature. Blessings to all from SunRay and Bonnie!

FYI: November to April wood fire is required in addition to the electric heat to keep the cabins warm and cozy. Wood fire heat takes time to start and to heat the cabin. To make your winter stay warm and comfortable good communication with us about your arrival time is essential!
Let us know your ETA, at least by the morning of your arrival, so we can schedule a fire starter for your cabin. Please update us if your plans change and confirm your arrival time when your GPS says you are 60 minutes away to have your fire lit and cabin cozy warm for your arrival.
Because guests are so frequently late we do not start your fire until you have messaged confirming your gps time of arrival when you are an hour away.

In Harmony with Nature
This was a lovely stay. The property celebrates nature, creativity, and craftsmanship. It was nice to explore the woods and all the ponds and streams and homes and structures, the orchard trees, the flowers, everything. It's a very tranquil serene place, perfect to disconnect and get in touch with nature and our deeper selves. We had the most relaxing time here, it was perfect. Ray upgraded us to the Garden House which felt very special to us. Bonnie was also super welcoming and accommodating even though we arrived super late. We offered to come the next day to avoid inconveniencing her, but she was so sweet not wanting us to miss the night. Everyone at the property was very friendly and welcoming. The place has a lot of charm. It fit us perfectly but it's not for everyone. It's rustic, all made from scratch, there are cobwebs in various corners that are in harmony with the space and not in the way at all (I'm afraid of spiders and these didn't bother me one bit because they fit so well). We really appreciated all the work that went into creating this space, the architecture, the decorations, the gardens. For us it was simply a joy to explore what other people have created with love and passion. Probably the highlight for us was the beautiful bathtub in the room. It was so inviting and so well placed, with the views of the mountains, forest, and the pond. We can't wait to come back again to try out one of the smaller cabins as well.

We will definitely be coming back!!
The Mush Room was everything we hoped it would be and then some! Bonnie was super nice and helpful, and the property is absolutely magical! We enjoyed the sauna, woke up to tea and coffee by the trout pond, and explored along the paths to see all the unique buildings that dot the landscape. Can’t wait for our next trip out here!

Whimsical Wonders!
Thank you Bonnie for such a lovely stay in the Garden House. My bedroom was comfortable and nicely decorated. The kitchen had everything one would need, and the eclectic furniture in the living quarters fit so well with all the indoor and outdoor surroundings. Thank you for allowing me to explore the wooded acreage and all the whimsical buildings that were so lovingly built I absolutely loved my stay!!

A hidden treasure that quiets and inspires the mind
We are so blessed to have gotten to experience this little slice of heaven on earth. We stayed for two nights and left with a lot peace, joy, and memories. There is so much love, creativity, beauty, and spirit here. Thank you to the hosts for the care and hard work it takes to keep everything so magical. We appreciated the fresh flowers, complementary coffee/tea, fun artistic details, and being provided with requested comforts (e.g. fan). Having kitty Madrona hang with us was the cherry on top too. We will be back! Some suggestions: Use real mattresses (the bed was a cushion and extremely uncomfortable). Add additional privacy (e.g. real curtains in cabin for daytime modesty, higher walls/doors for compost restrooms). Create a property map to let guests know where trails lead and other areas open to exploration. Make safety improvements (e.g. More light on the trails, repair rotting wood steps, bridges, and hand rails). Create a website that features the history and artistic process of all the buildings.

Magical
This place is absolutely magical and Bonnie is just wonderful! The story and architecture is beautiful. We had so much fun exploring the property and enjoying the fish ponds and all the nature that surrounds. We made friends with the kitties that roam the property, and sat with the bees for a time. After leaving my husband keeps asking me how he can beat this, how can he "repay" me for finding such an amazingly magical place to stay. I find some gems, but this place takes the cake! 10 out of 10 will stay again and again!

Magic
My fiance and I had the most wonderful time at SunRay Shire. It is a beautiful space, lovingly crafted by an inspired family who are happy to share it with the world. We enjoyed walking around the property, noticing all the unique details. The outdoor kitchen and gathering space is fully outfitted with all one (or a large group) would need to cook and share a meal. The Mush Room is so cozy with windows all around and the calming sound of running water just outside. We loved looking up at the ceiling, with a view to the trees and sky above. Pure magic, a great getaway, and wonderful place to reconnect. We'll be back!

Wonderful place
We had a great time exploring the property, cooking in the outdoor kitchen, and hanging out in the woods. Bonnie was a great host, generous and kind. This place is a hidden treasure, so genuinely magical and earthy. You might want to bring a headlamp for getting around in the woods, if you are staying in the Mush Room.

Amazing rustic experience
This was the cutest little cabin. Definitely just for 2. I didn't read the description well and packed way more then i needed. The room doesn't have any kitchen, every thing is inbthebshared kitchen up the hill so keep this in mind while packing. It was beautiful and serene. Id Definitely stay here again.

This this for the adventurers. The ones who create. The ones who build. The ones who imagine. The ones who seek. This isnt for those who throw their money at a getaway or a cruise. This is for the people who can appreciate serendipity. The ones who find their soulmate because of mutual passion and special interests. This is a one of a kind, cant be replaced, cant be duplicated, shared from the soul, place.... im honored to have been a part of that.

delightful getaway
We had a wonderful time at Sunray Shire! The Mushroom cabin was a cozy retreat, with a big wood stove and a comfy bed. We loved waking up under the glass dome and seeing the light come through the forest, and falling asleep to the sound of the waterfall. Lots of hiking/biking nearby, and it's fun to wander the property (so many whimsical creations). The outdoor kitchen had everything we needed to make delicious meals and we enjoyed crossing paths with the other guests while cooking. Bonnie (the host) is lovely and made sure we had everything we needed!

Magical!
Beautiful property nestled amongst a peaceful lovely forested property in Sedro Woolley. Perfect communication- we were greeted warmly by Bonnie and her son -The Mush Room was so very charming, warm with a comfortable bed. Awesome outdoor hot shower, great paths around the property for walk abouts. Rubio, the sweet orange cat moved in with us, took a hike with us and curled up and and slept with us all night. We foraged for apples in their forest and now I have a freezer full of delicious applesauce from Sunray Shire to share and enjoy this winter that will remind us this perfect little getaway we had only 1 1/2 hours from Seattle. Planning to return. Definitely recommend! Thank you, Bonnie!

Why they chose this property

My property is part of my Grandfather Janicki's original homestead. Grandma and Grandpa were Polish immigrants. My Mother moved with Grandpa and Grandma to Western Washington from Chicago in 1920. She was the oldest of 10 children and was the first one in her family to speak English. The old growth cedar trees had been logged from the property when my Grandfather bought the land. I grew up on Cultus Mountain playing on those big old growth stumps, climbing trees and building forts in the woods. I never lost my love of doing those things.
