About the property

Sunrise Cottage on Mahalas Lane

Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled at the end of a private lane. A guest of the cottage, the author, Marianne Cushing, has had published (December 2013) her debut novel, Mahalas Lane (the lane of the cottage), which uses the cottage as a point of reference for her investigation-romance work of art. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.

Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)

Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Seaglass Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach and Sheep's Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, so the beach is private and unique in that sense as well. On the south side of the property line landscape by the beach house, there is a walking path that runs through the trees along the south side of the beach house down to the shoreline that residents of the lane have used and are permitted to use for at least going over the passed 86 years. Any other non-guest foot traffic to the shoreline through the cottage property is not permitted. The cottage provides its own private access to the shoreline from its own private cottage property grounds which run to and meet the shoreline, the perspective of which is captured in the accompanying photographs.

The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, with pristine white ship-lap throughout and a built-in bed.

A split-rail fence contains the ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space any time of the day; sit on the patio for morning coffee and watch the sunrise over the ocean or stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.

The main house (cottage), approximately 196' from the shoreline, and the beach house, approximately 72' from the shoreline, have five bedrooms (two king and three queen Mission style platform beds from LL Bean) and the carriage house, approximately 49' from the main house (cottage), with four Mission style twin platform beds from LL Bean can sleep four in a way that has the sensibility of a camp-bunk house. The downstairs and upstairs master bedrooms have Mission style platform king beds from LL Bean and ocean views and adjoining bathrooms.

The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the water and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Plenty of windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.

There are three bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom has a queen Mission style platform bed from LL Bean and the second bedroom has a queen Mission style platform bed from LL Bean and one twin built-in bed. Both have views of the water and comfortable furnishings.

The third upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one Mission style platform king bed from LL Bean with an ocean view.

There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers sleeping space for two on a queen Mission style platform bed from LL Bean, as well as a campaign style desk-table, two slipcovered sitting chairs, a state-of-the-art BioLet 65XL composting commode situated in the beach cottage's exterior closet, an under-counter refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, a flat screen television and Blu-Ray DVD player, a countertop water dispenser and a spacious deck with a panoramic view of the ocean. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.

There is also a carriage house which has the sensibility of a camp-bunk house as it has two slipcovered couches, a 46" Samsung flat screen television, a Blu-Ray DVD player, an XBOX360 game box-station, a coffee table and four Mission style twin platform beds from LL Bean. In this sense, the carriage house offers some additional space for some peace and quiet or for children-young adults to have some space for themselves for a bit.

The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum, the Owls Head General Store (home of the award-winning Loaded 7-Napkin Burger and old-time penny candy) and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).

Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, Planet Toys and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine).

Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).

These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.

The house offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, hair dryer, hand held clothes steamer, cable television and Internet Wi-Fi connection.

About Paul H. Spiers

We are a family of four, living in Corrales, New Mexico (12 miles north of Albuquerque) along the cottonwood rimmed Rio Grande, with historical roots in Boston, Owls Head, Viet Nam and Chicago. I am an Assistant United States Attorney, a former Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County, Cambridge, Massachusetts and former Lieutenant in the United States Navy (Philippines and Italy) and my wife, whose family made Chicago home when Viet Nam fell in 1975, is an attorney who teaches paralegal studies. Our two children, a son and a daughter, are aspiring students.

Paul H. Spiers purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Paul H. Spiers chose Mid-Coast & Islands

Once upon a time, in February 2008, I found myself wanting to introduce my family, who had never been to Owls Head before, to a place where my mother grew up and where, when a child, my mother, father and sisters and family at large vacationed every Summer with our cousins and where we played amongst apple trees (still alive and flowering) and went to the beach - Owls Head. We live a long way away in New Mexico, but I climbed aboard the VRBO website and looked for a cottage under the Owls Head heading. In the looking, I paused when I saw the cottage and I kept going back to it. The fresh brightness of the white ship-lap walls and the universal flow of natural light captured a vibrant, welcome feeling. And, I liked the pathway, the green gate down to the beach and shoreline. So, we held our breath and went for a week in June 2008. Always prone for a disappointment and always at the ready for one, I wondered whether we would regret the choice. It turned out to be one of the best things that we've ever done. When we first walked into the cottage, it was immediately apparent that once we crossed the threshold, the cottage, even with the nice presentation reflected on the VRBO website, gave an understated special character and sensibility that transcended virtual descriptions. That first evening sitting on the beach house deck, I wondered what it would be like to bring the cottage into our family. Over the course of time, we vacationed at the cottage for two weeks every Summer and then purchased the cottage while we were vacationing at the cottage in July 2011. And the rest, as they say, is history.

What makes this cottage unique

What has made the cottage experience unique, more than anything else, over the course of time have been our guests. Our guests, some of whom return year after year, some who have become friends and with whom we regard as a relationship of fellowship, have come from varied walks of life, some doctors, some educators, some Fed-Ex and UPS managers and employees, some finance experts, some artists, some painters, some lawyers, some scientists, some home-schooling mothers, some writers and some violin players but the common thread has been an appreciation that our guests seemingly have, no matter what path of life that their path may hail from, for the experience of fresh flowers and fruit on the table. In other words, our guests, because of their relationship to the cottage, have lent the cottage a unique richness, not quantifiable, in character and sensibility built up over time that continues to enhance the cottage experience for all today - an experience that includes a relationship with the sea, the easy comfort of the beach's sand which makes for nice, reflective morning or evening strolls with a cup of coffee in hand in the morning or with a glass of wine in hand in the evening, the kitchen windows that open upward above the kitchen sink and give an intimate view of the ocean, the occasional fox that moves across the landscape, the scent of balsam fir in the evening air, the sound of the waves hitting the shoreline at night as you sit at the dinner table and the birds landing on the raspberry bushes in the evening beyond the beach house deck while watching triple masted schooners slip by on the horizon against a deep blue sky. These all are but a few of the favorite things.

Great property & location for the ultimate in family relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Sunrise Cottage is unlike any other property we've ever a great way! I can't possibly say enough about the perfect location with the beach accessibility, wonderful views of islands & wildlife, and the close proximity to downtown Rockland & Camden for dining out. Be sure to check out Cafe Miranda for some super fresh & funky food! We were able to launch our kayaks easily from the beach and had nightly campfires in the fire pit overlooking the ocean. Even my husband (who has a slightly tough time relaxing) was able to unwind & enjoy the peaceful location & area. We kayaked over to Ash Island on three occasions and successfully hunted for sea glass. Having the 3 separate sleeping quarters was convenient for our extended family & teenagers--not to mention the Xbox 360 in the bunk house. The owner was accessible, friendly & proactive in providing great service. Highly recommended retreat and we'll surely be back.

A true gem!

  • 5 of 5

I'm not one to write reviews on places we've stayed or anything for that matter. However, this place deserves a 5-star review! Not enough space to write how wonderful this cottage was for my family and I. We had never been to Maine and this couldn't have been more perfect. We had 7 people and were so comfortable! In fact, the lay out of the house was truly perfect for us. The shopping, the restaurants (did I mention the amazing lobster almost every day!), the beach, etc were everything you'd want in a vacation. We even had a day trip to Acadia Nat'l Park which was an excellent adventure. Just as important, the owner of the cottage truly loves his place and takes exquisite care of it and ensures that you will have a truly memorable stay. We will definitely be back....not soon enough!

Fabulous cottage! Our favorite vacation spot.

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sunrise cottage. Our family has stayed here twice and have already started thinking about another trip to Maine. The owner is very nice and seems to always be working to improve the property. He even called to wish us Merry Christmas last year (we had stayed at the property in April). Personal touches like this make all the difference. The cottage itself is very clean and well equipped. The beds are comfortable and each bedroom has a beautiful view of the sunrise. We had snow during our last visit and still had a wonderful time. Rockland is a short drive away and has several great restaurants and an amazing coffee shop. We will definitely be back to sunrise cottage!

I'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

I have been coming to Maine since 1993 and renting houses on the ocean. This cottage on Owl's Head is, by far, the nicest! In fact, this is my second visit. I retired in May, and my sisters, nieces and I wanted to go on a girls trip to celebrate so I recommended this cottage. My family loved it! From the moment we pulled into the driveway, they were struck by the charm of the place. Upon entering the main cottage, we were greeted with fresh flowers in the living room, fresh fruit on the dining room table, and beautiful views of the ocean from the dining room and kitchen. The owner even called us to make sure everything was to our liking. Other amenities included a wonderfully appointed kitchen, a large screen TV in the living room, and free WiFi. The bedrooms have comfortable beds and there are plenty of clean towels. And that's just the main cottage! The finished carriage house is a great place for kids with its own flat screen TV. One of my sisters stayed in the charming and fully furnished beach house down by the ocean and said she could stay there forever. During the day we explored light houses, hiked in nearby Camden Hills State Park, and took an easy day trip up to Acadia Nat'l Park. In the evenings back at the cottage, we enjoyed star gazing around a campfire down at the beach. I definitely recommend this wonderful cottage experience. I know I intend to return.

A great place to vacation but.....

  • 4 of 5

My Parents rented this charming five bedroom house as our yearly family reunion spot. My self and my husband, bother and sister and their spouses. Let me start by sharing the good.. The house upon arrival was found spotlessly clean. Immaculate would be a better term. We have rented homes all over the world and this was by far the cleanest home we have ever checked into anywhere. That in itself earns high marks to the owner. The house possesses charming nooks, slanted ceilings, slanted floors and a wonderful feel to it. the kitchen is great and the dining has plenty of room for a large family. The cottage is located on a dirt side road in a residential neighborhood. Beach access> You follow a grass path through bunches of wildflowers right to your very own sand beach perfect for swimming, exploring via kayak and just general relaxation. Lots and Lots of Nature & there are plenty of options for dining, shopping and the freshest of seafood less then four miles away. We found the beds comfortable, the appliances all new, new flat screen TV's and everything in great working order. No complaints. Now for the not so good... None of the bedrooms have doors with the exception of the second floor king with bath. The door is on the bedroom but there is no way to close it because there is no handle on the inside. Also on the second floor, the bedrooms all lead into each other.. Its okay for kids, but with married couples? Some privacy would have been nice. the first floor bedroom (king master) also had no door. My parents took this one and fixed a room divider across the entrance for privacy. We all made do with the situation. But it would have been nice to know ahead of time. Also, if you are looking at this home to rent, please keep in mind the following> the neighbors do not tolerate any kind of noise whatsoever. My parents are in their 60's, myself and my husband are in our 40's and my siblings and spouses are in there late 30's. We were not particularly rowdy. We were spoken to twice. I also will not list the numerous dirty looks, we received from the neighbors both across the street and next to the house. It is stated in the lease, very clearly to be mindful of the neighbors. However when you are on a hard earned vacation with your family, the last thing in the world that you want to have to on vacation in the summer is tip toe around whispering. Id rent again, beautiful spot.. but the neighbors would definitely be a deterrent to this....

Owner's Response: We want to thank our guest for the many nice things said about the cottage and her family's stay, how she spoke about the special character of the cottage and also for the helpful suggestions about the cottage experience. We welcome this relationship with our guests. Over the course of the past eight years we have been fortunate to have had many guests, couples and families stay with us at the cottage. Families both with and without children have been guests of the cottage and now many of our guests return year after year - some for a week, some for two weeks and some for an entire month. In other words, as for the unfortunate crossing of paths with neighbor(s) described here, it is difficult to know what to say about this as it has never come up before and there has not been any previous indication of disturbance in the neighborly force. Neighbors - often summer guests themselves - when we have seen them at all (some resident neighbors leave for the summer), have been friendly, tend to go their own way and up until this described but unfamiliar moment have not shown much interest in the fabric of life at the cottage. As for doors, the downstairs master bedroom now has a simple, cottage style door for privacy. As for two of the three upstairs bedrooms which have an open quality about them, these bedrooms have been provided with aesthetically pleasing Japanese Shoji privacy screens as an option should they be desired for privacy use but these two bedrooms will keep their open quality as in the past guests with families have liked them for their open sensibility - a sensibility that has seemed to promote a meaningful sense of family and togetherness for children and families catching up with each other in ways that more closed quarters might inhibit. Especially as one of these two bedrooms has a built-in twin bed that mimics a ship's bunk that has become the children's favorite for which they seem to end up competing. And both the beach house, the downstairs master bedroom and the upstairs master bedroom have doors and a corresponding sense of privacy. Once again, thank you to our guest for her helpful suggestions and kind words.

The location of the cottage is quiet, peaceful and on the water and a place where families, friends or couples can gather for catching up with each other or getting away for some peace and quiet, for strolling on the beach, for reading (or writing) a good book or song or poem or for watching the occasional fox pass by. The cottage, in Owls Head, is a place where no commercial entity exists but for the Owls Head General Store approximately 2.5 miles away but where within an approximate seven mile drive you can visit Rockland where there is a world class art museum (The Farnsworth), fine dining (The Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine and tapas bar), art galleries, fine cinema (The Strand), a nice old town Main Street to walk and a bit farther north, the world class Samoset Resort with its beautiful seaside golf course, spa, restaurant overlooking Penobscot Bay, outdoor pool with the same overlook and fitness center. In other words, the cottage provides a location unique with the best of both worlds - waterfront and beach-strolling peace, comfort and commercial-free quiet within a comfortable distance of more modern world accessories.
