About Susan Poole
Kerry is a local design/builder who put her talents to work creating Mountainside Cottage. She incorporated her love of light and simplicity to create a place that is warm and inviting. Susan lends her talents as the former owner of one of the Southeast's most successful bed and breakfasts, making sure that this cottage has everything necessary to make a traveler feel at home. Having lived in the Asheville area for 20 years, we have a deep love and respect for the natural environment as well as the cultural opportunities found in this region of the Appalachian mountains.
Susan Poole purchased this House in 2008
Why Susan Poole chose French Broad
When the 3 private acres adjacent to our 15 acres became available, we knew that would be the perfect place to build a vacation home for our extended families. As they are scattered around the world, it was important for us to offer a place that was near by, but afforded them the privacy they need and deserve. We soon realized this would also be a great place to offer as a vacation rental.
What makes this House unique
In this busy world, this is a unique opportunity to experience TOTAL privacy. One of the things we love about the cottage is sitting on the covered deck, looking out into the woods, and listening to the sounds of nature. It's also great to drive into Weaverville, about 5 minutes away, grab a pastry or two at the world's BEST bakery, and come back and relax on the patio or in the hot tub on the deck.

Property was just how it appeared in the pictures and was a picturesque, peaceful place to stay
My girlfriend and I stayed at Susan's cottage for a long weekend at the end of April and it was great. Having the hot tub on the deck surrounded by trees was nice, and the inside of the house was clean and the perfect size for the two of us. The location was a bit further from downtown than expected but you should be able to tell that by the general area provided. Only other thing you could knock it for would be the steep gravel driveway going up to it, but we were able to handle it in a Honda Civic so it really shouldn't be a problem unless you're a nervous driver in an older car. The driveway did contribute to the significantly private location which we did like. Overall it was a fantastic stay and you could tell there was a lot of effort put into making it that way
4.3 stars. Great escape! Quiet and roomy with natural beauty in abundance.
My wife and I really needed a space to escape, connect and relax together with no distractions. This was the perfect spot. Birds, mountain views, weather changes including a rainbow, hot tub, and a comfortable home. The shower which is nice and large had less pressure than we prefer but that was it and some folks might not dig the rough road up to the house but I sure did. The home was very beautiful, well constructed, clean, no odd smells and everything worked great! The location was perfect for us - no close neighbors, grocery store 5 miles away, within 15 minutes to Asheville and close to the BRP. We would definitely stay here again!!
Great romantic getaway
This cottage was clean and well-kept, totally secluded but still close to everything asheville and the surrounding areas had to offer. We stayed here for a 10th Anniversary weekend away from the kids and it was perfect. It's great when rentals include a dishwasher and washer/dryer too!
Total privacy is awesome
This cabin is a very quaint, nice, secluded, and totally private place to relax and unwind. Susan the owner, is very nice and completely professional. She is also “Johnny on the spot” with anything you may need to speak with her about during your stay.
Exactly what you sign up for!
This little cabin was perfect, exactly what we were looking for for our little getaway in Asheville area. Secluded and quaint and the kitchen has all essentials which is really wonderful! Susan was super helpful with any questions or concerns we had and just such a nice person. The drive into Asheville was only a 15 minute drive, depending on where you were going, but super easy to navigate around to where ever you wanted to go. Having a vehicle with 4WD isn't necessarily needed but its super helpful, the driveway it very uphill and with a low vehicle you just need to be careful not to bottom out. We had no problems getting up in our 4Runner or the Honda civic. Thank you for allowing us to use your adorable home!!
Sun-filled, beautiful, clean, private cabin with stunning views close to everything!
This cabin was just perfect for our first visit to the Asheville area during Thanksgiving week, and Susan could not have been more gracious, responsive, or accommodating! My husband and I loved being able to have our dog with us, and the cabin was very spacious for the three of us (and we didn’t even utilize the loft, whIch would be perfect for kids). It was also immaculately clean when we arrived.
We LOVED the views from the hot tub on the back deck, and we appreciated that the deck only has access from the house (not the yard) so that our dog could hang out there while we caught the sunset or star gazed from the hot tub.
The cabin’s location was perfect. We enjoyed the view of the French Broad River from the deck and from the road to the cabin (which was an adventure, but which our Jeep handled without ever having to use 4WD). We loved the little town of Weaverville and the shops and restaurants it had to offer. Groceries, gas, and great breakfast spots were just a few minutes away. Asheville itself was a short and very pretty drive away.
The cabin had everything we needed. The couch and recliners were super comfy, and we enjoyed watching the Macy’s parade on the tv. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen was well-stocked with plenty of dishes, pots, pans, etc. I was able to make a nice Thanksgiving feast for two without any problem.
Our favorite part, though, was by far that hot tub out on the deck! It was definitely a highlight of a trip that was filled with a perfect combination of exploring the area and relaxing back at such a beautiful home base!
Thank you, thank you, Tara! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We try to think of things that will make visitors' stay more fun and relaxing, so it's great that we hopefully achieved that. And it's wonderful to hear that you liked Weaverville as well. It often gets overlooked by its "big sister" Asheville, but it really is a neat little town!
