About this property

Modern Leland Lakefront Retreat

Architecture+Design Standout | Contemporary Leland Cottage on the "North End"

“Rangoon” is located a mile north of Leland, nestled down a tree-lined gravel drive shielded from traffic and noise by majestic white pines. This home’s craftsmanship, materials, and furnishings reflect the vision of its owners, whose multigenerational ties to Leland shaped its timelessness, permanence, and comfort to be enjoyed by generations for generations. Rangoon is an architectural ‘old soul,’ a contemporary build with a rare vintage spirit.

As you pull in, you are greeted by the unmistakable beauty and colors of Lake Leelanau as the oversized windows afford a direct view of the lake through the house. The Cottage entrance is flanked by an intimate garden courtyard where you’ll enjoy morning coffee, a midday read, or an evening cocktail.

Upon entrance, panoramic views of the Lake and the wooded landscape greet you immediately thanks to an abundance of glass and exceptional natural light. As you step down into the sunken living space, you will notice the balance of raw materials and clean design that create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Warm Baltic Birchwood, brick, steel beams and radiant concrete work together to define the space, while architectural hallmarks that include a built-in sofa, floor-to-ceiling fireplace, and oversized hearth work to refine it.

The dining area sits between the Living Room and the Kitchen and seats 8 comfortably. It is complimented by the Bar, anchored by a vintage stereo receiver and turntable powered by Sonos, giving guests a custom listening experience capable of blending classic vinyl with contemporary streaming favorites.

The Kitchen has been designed for year-round use, evidenced by the selection of stainless steel appliances, brass hardware fixtures, and custom cabinetry. A hidden coffee bar area includes toaster, microwave, blender and coffee maker. The epicenter of the Kitchen is a large granite island which seats 5, giving guests stunning views of the lake while conversing, cooking, or dining.

Large sliding doors lead out to the expansive deck that overlooks Lake Leelanau. The deck is appointed with vintage Brown Jordan furniture that includes a large dining table, 2 Lido Chaise Lounge chairs, coffee tables, and seating for 8. Stepping off the deck, you make your way towards the lake where the crystal clear water reflects the puffy whites, radiant blues, and gentle breezes that comprise the Lake Leelanau experience.

The Dock serves as its own living space, with a large platform for sunbathing and gathering. With a built-in Bench, “Shore Step System” (aluminum steps with handrail), and ample space for beach chairs, this space is unlike any other on the property as it serves as host to lazy, sunny Dock Days spent reading and dozing as well as active Lake Days spent swimming, paddle boarding and canoeing.

The “upper” portion of the First Floor plays host to the Master Suite, cleverly tucked away behind the ‘hidden door’ built into the Baltic Birch wall to afford privacy. You’ll awaken to radiant sunrises and the sounds of birds who can be eager to remind you where you are. The First Floor is also home to the oversized Mud Room, a cheerful Powder Bath, and an exceptionally functional Laundry Room that includes Washer/Dryer Set, commercial tub sink and extra refrigerator.

The Second Floor is home to 3 Bedrooms, 2 of which face the Lake while the oversized 3rd Bedroom faces the front of the house and doubles as a Game Room/Home Office with 56” Smart TV. Bedroom 1 has 2-Twin Beds, walk-in closet, a single-sink Vanity and Shower/Tub Combo. Bedroom 2 also has 2-Twin Beds, walk-in closet, sink-sink Vanity and Shower. The 3rd Bedroom’s oversized sleeper sectional includes a Queen Pullout, closet space, single-sink Vanity and a Shower/Tub Combo.

Rangoon is neither pretentious nor rustic, striking a delicate balance between the old and new. It was designed to serve as a nod to some of the more architecturally influential cottages in Leelanau County, some of which sadly no longer exist. We hope that you’ll find as much joy as we have here, creating memories from the unexpected moments that happen when you’re away. Welcome to Rangoon...

Lake Leelanau Five Star Cottage
Besides the stunning architectural design of the cottage, the views were spectacular. You can enjoy the beauty of Lake Leelanau both inside and out. It is very convenient to Leland. The house was well furnished and well stocked with anything and everything you would need for a perfect vacation. A group of six adults enjoyed the week and didn’t want yo leave !

Why they chose this property

The owners thoughtfully enlisted the creative services of a recognized architect within the region and Michigan. They worked closely with the architect and design professional to realize their vision of a modern home for their family to enjoy for many generations to come. With the concept of Mid-century design and modern living styles the home is contemporary yet authentically Northern Michigan at the same time. The blending of modern with historical elements makes this residence one of a kind.

The setting is private with a long drive way bordered by tall old growth cedars. Lake Leelanau may be enjoyed from nearly every room in the residence. The beauty of the lake and the sound of the water immediately provide a peaceful relaxing experience.

It is rare to find a modern residence which has the sense of being in place for decades. Yet this home is one of those unique exceptions. Classic design elements compliment the modern features of today's lake lifestyle. The open plan with expansive views across the lakeside of the home provides the gathering concept preferred for modern entertaining and family gathering.

The owners thoughtfully combined personal style with vintage furnishings, comtemporary finishes, and fixtures. The setting of the residence represents a stately lake cottage of the Mid-century with the conveniences of modern living.
