House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-8)
Welcome to our Happy House! My parents have owned this house since 1976 and it one of the only houses on the block that survived Hugo in 1989. We had cars and boats under the house, and we had the second story of a front beach house a block away resting calmly against the palm trees in the front of the house. Thank goodness for those palm trees! Needless to say, we were very fortunate.....very fortunate.
It is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath Round house. It was designed and built by Air Force Major Walter Pillsbury in 1967...he was ahead of his league with round houses. In an article sent to me by his wife Pam last year, (from 1967)...."As if a hexagonal-shaped house weren't enough, the major crowned it with a steeple".
The coolest thing to me that Major Pillsbury did was what we have always called "the Bed in the Wall"!....there is a bed in the wall....a twin. I have grown over the years, but when I was 12 years old, I always called it! To me, that is one of our greatest features....needless to say I am now 45 years old. We also have a sleeper sofa.
We have totally rehabbed it this spring. Major had a steeple on top, but it was with deep regret, we had to replace it with a new roof and "Copala"....Mom and Dad just used to hang more plants up to catch the leaks...all good now, and thanks to our contractor Alex! I think the Pillsbury's would approve!
We have also replaced the deck, the bathroom (new tile, countertops, tub, shower, etc),new outdoor shower, and added a new set of stairs to the front. New paint in and out, gutters, etc.....
My Mom named it the "Happy House". It is very user friendly. And now pet friendly as well. It's a house that you can go in and not worry too much about messing up a $50 million dollar piece of furniture.....
We are across the street from the beach...you used to be able to see it...directly...until they built the monster house....so sorry about that. My Dad used to always trim the trees for the views.....
We are very proud of what we have done these past few months. My husband, my sister, and myself, and our friend Alex and his team....incredible carpenters.
Our Dad has Alzheimer's, and I just wish we could take him there one more time....we can't, but I know he would be proud!!
It is a Happy House.... so welcome to our Happy House!!!

Another fun visit at The Happy House!
We had another wonderful time at "The Happy House." This was our 6th or 7th time there, and we are starting to feel like it is our home away from home! We will definitely return.
Good Location but musty
Kat was very easy to deal with. The new deck was nice however all the gates including the backyard need to be adjusted so they open/close properly. Fridge was dirty. The house needs a good cleaning including the carpets and furniture as they are very musty/moldy. It also needs some updating especially the master bathroom that has white duct tape keeping the bathtub and flooring together. We found the house very dark. It was nice to have the washer and dryer. We expected more for what we paid.
This home was in a perfect location for a low key beach vacation. Right across the street from the beach access. The beach was just about deserted. It was like having a private beach. The house is spacious for a 2 bedroom beach home. The bedrooms are comfortably sized and the beds were in pretty good condition considering it is the end of the summer season. The kitchen is well stocked with about any cooking needs you may have. The grill is well maintained and the gas tank was full. There were a few toys and a chair under the porch if anyone happened to need them. The deck is newly built and very spacious. The shade of the oak trees in the heat of the day was amazing. Those trees are beautiful and have so much character. There are three couches and two chairs. Considering there was only two of us, the seating was plentiful! I loved the wood shutters for all the sliding glass doors. They worked perfectly to let light in on whichever side of the house the sun was not currently shining in. It was great to be able to take our dogs with us as they love to travel and love the beach even more. It was a little difficult communicating with Katherine, but once we were in contact with Connie who actually lives in Mt Pleasant, things went a lot smoother. There was a hiccup the first day with the check in process, but Connie came out and made it right. Isle of Palms is my favorite beach and Happy House made the visit all the more relaxing and fun. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
"The Happy House is a very lovely place.
We really enjoyed our stay at "The Happy House ". It was a pleasant experience from the beginning to the end. We loved the Oak trees in the front yard and that the beach access was right across the street. We love the history about the house, that it was the only house that survived Hugo on the block. Our only wish was that we wanted to stay longer, but back to reality came all to quick.

Run down rental
Could be a nice rental but carpet is old and musty, furniture looks like thrift store stuff and the overall appearance and cleanliness was poor. I expected some level of minimum standard from this leasing agent but won't be doing anything with them again.
Excellent Location at IOP, Wonderful Accommodations
This was the 2nd time my son and I stayed at the Happy House and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everything is there that you need and the location is excellent. Walk across the road to the beach. The beach access is right there! I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the house at all.
The only negative I have to say about the entire trip is about the neighbors in the house behind us. They were LOUD and stayed up late at night. Even my 11 year old son complained about them being up too late at night. I know there is a noise ordinance there at IOP and I just wish they had complied with it like everyone else. But, there is always one in every crowd, I guess. This had nothing at all to do with the owners of the Happy House and it was not their fault by any means. I would definitely come back and stay at this house again. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and even with the neighbors being loud, still had a wonderful time. :)
